Athens This Weekend: July 20-22

Get excited, because the weekend is just around the corner! Bring the family to enjoy great outdoor events, as well as cool, indoor activities. Athens, Georgia is certainly the place to be this weekend, with exciting events for all ages!

1. Splashdown 2012

In honor of the 43rd anniversary of mankind's first mission to the moon, Bishop Park in Athens will host Splashdown 2012 from 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 20. The evening's activities will include a swim in the pool under the moon, arts & crafts, music, and fun astronomy games, all while snacking on free Moonpies and Tang! All ages are welcome and admission is free. It's one small splash for man, one giant splash for mankind!

2. Shape Up in the Park

Start your Saturday off right with a morning full of exercise! On Saturday, July 21, Southeast Clarke Park will host Shape Up in the Park from 7-11 a.m., a half-day of free outdoor fitness and wellness classes. The morning's itinerary includes back-to-back classes of Zumba, Yoga, Tai Chi, and more, as well as raffles and prize give-aways! All ages are welcome, and admission is free. Be sure to dress appropriately for exercise, and don't forget to bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Get movin' in the park!

3. ATHICA Emerges V: The Synthetic Mind

Saturday, July 21 marks the opening of the Athens Institute of Contemporary Art's most recent exhibit, ATHICA Emerges V: The Synthetic Mind. The exhibit displays nine artists' works, which synthesize perception and awareness from a variety of approaches, from the neurobiological to sociological. The opening reception on July 21 will be from 7-9 p.m. at ATHICA art gallery. Tour the exhibit once again anytime on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursdays from 1-9 p.m., or Fridays through Sundays from 1-6 p.m. The exhibit will be open through Sunday, September 9. Admission is free and open to all ages!

How to Be a Painter for a Day - Art Experiences in Athens for the Non-Artist

I will be the first one to tell you that I am no artist. In fact, the last art class I had was in elementary school, where I remember making a crooked clay pot constructed with uneven coils (I gave it to my mother, and it now proudly stands hidden in our basement). But this doesn't mean I don't appreciate art and those who create it. In fact, something I love about Athens is its great art scene -- there are so many exhibits to see and so many local artists that are showcased in different Athens businesses.

So maybe you will understand my excitement when I heard about the opening of Artini's this past summer. If you haven't heard of them, they basically have a set calendar each month of different paintings; you choose which painting you like, register for the class, and show up that night ready to stir your creative juices!

They will teach you step-by-step how to paint the chosen piece of artwork, so if you're a beginner like me, you will have no problem creating a masterpiece. Even experienced painters and artists are welcome, however; if you want to add your own flair, use different colors, or change certain aspects of the design, you are totally welcome to do so. You are provided with all the necessary tools to make your painting: an apron, easel, canvas, paints, brushes, etc.

I was very excited the week before going in to paint my "Sitting Pretty" piece. The night of, I arrived at Artini's at around 6:30 (they recommend getting there 30 minutes early in order to get a parking space in the limited lot they share with Gigi's Cupcakes and Sweet Peppers Deli), and used my extra time to look at some of the great art being displayed in the space as well as get myself situated. I talked to a few of the people sitting around me; many of them also were first-timers sharing the same excitement and nervousness I felt about how the painting would turn out. As our instructor began the class, we set to work on our canvases, equipped with our brushes and aprons.

As we got further into the session, we all started

really having fun with our paintings! Looking around, I saw a variety in designs and colors, and even the instructor was giving suggestions on how to alter the paintings to one's own taste. She gave us plenty of time for each step to make sure that everyone was happy with their work, and even though I sometimes worried about small imperfections and details (those thin branches gave me a very difficult time), I was very content with the final outcome.

What made Artini's a great experience besides the fact that I came out of it with something nice to put in my room? First of all, the people at Artini's create a really fun and relaxing atmosphere; they are very personable and like to get the classes pumped by playing music and serving beverages. This brings me to my second point: they offer refreshments while you paint, so if you are of age, you can order a bottle of wine with your friends. This would make a great place to have a private party for birthdays or any other special events.

Now, I do know there are other places in Athens that offer similar types of experiences, such as Pints & Paints and Sips n Strokes. Unfortunately, I personally have not had the opportunity to visit these places; however, I have heard great things from people who have gone. I would like to eventually go, since each place offers such distinct options, and honestly, my room is a little bare.

Athens This Weekend: July 22-24

It's going to be one of those weekends in Athens, GA. You know, the kind of weekend with enough exciting events taking place around town for you to be able to customize your days specifically to your own interests. I suggest you start creating your itinerary now- so as not to miss the fun happenings going on in Athens, GA this weekend. There is:

1) Art to be discussed; If you haven't yet had the chance to visit the first Resident Studio Exhibition at ATHICA, featuring 30 oil paintings by Maxine Youngblood, then it's time to get out there and check it out  in its final weekend. The exhibit's Closing Reception will take place Sunday, July 24, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will include an artist & curator Panel for open discussion and finally, a reception with the artist. Having not started creating art until the age of 52, Maxine Youngblood, now around 73 years old, nevertheless, creates vivid, rousing works of art. The 30 oil paintings being featured in ATHICA's Resident Studio exhibit are of that same nature, bright, colorful, and passionate, often likened to the style of French and German Expressionism. Curator Lizzie Zucker Saltz and Assistant Curator Ashley Westpheling largely selected works that were figurative in nature- representing pop culture icons like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Donald Trump, as well as other local artists, performers, and models. If you already had the pleasure of visiting this exhibit or will be visiting for the first time this weekend, be sure to remember to come out for the closing reception on Sunday to hear about the works from the artist and curators themselves! 2) Music to be danced to; In its seventh consecutive year, the Annual Darius Goes West Benefit Concert will feature huge acts, such as Bubba Sparxxx and the Nappy Roots who will be accompanied by Georgia Gurlz and Elite Tha Showstoppa- doors open at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the 40 Watt. Tickets will be $10 in advance and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Darius Goes West: The Roll of his Life is an award winning documentary that followed Darius Weems, a teen with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, on a 7,000 mile journey across the U.S. to spread awareness about the fatal DMD disease and raise money for researching a cure. The film was widely praised and raised over one million dollars for research. Since the film, a Darius Goes West Foundation continues to spread awareness and raise money through events such as the one taking place in Athens, GA this weekend. 3) Local commerce to be supported; The Athens Farmers Market is still in full swing, all local produce and crafts at their freshest and finest, Saturday at Bishop Park from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Your beautiful morning of perusing the displays of the healthy produce and delightful crafts in the sun will be set to a Celtic soundtrack this Saturday morning as Repent at Leisure will play at 8:00 a.m., but the track will flip with the soul folk sounds of local singer/songwriter Kyshona Armstrong at 10:00 a.m. I know it'll be Saturday, but the Athens Farmers Market is worth setting your alarm for this weekend! 4) Theater to be enjoyed; Opening night of The Circle Ensemble Theater performance of Metamorphoses will take place Thursday and run through the Saturday night, July 21-23, beginning each night at 8:30 p.m. in the pool at Ashford Manor. The play transforms ancient myth and lore into contemporary language in a story that takes place completely in and around a large pool of water. Athens This Weekend: July 15-17

The summer heat has been a huge and steady companion to all venturing outdoors in Athens, GA these last couple of weeks- greeting all who exit the relief of air conditioning with an enthusiastic, all-consuming hug of humidity. But our good friend, Sweltering Heat, will be giving us some much needed space this weekend in Athens, GA, so let's make the most of it! With a varied calendar of options for all ages, plan on getting out and about for multiple weekend events!

1) Spend your Saturday morning in the midst of renewed classical antiquity and in the company of the little ones you love most at the Georgia Museum of Art Family Day event running from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The Family Day of July 16th will feature the Kress Collection, which includes 12 Italian Renaissance paintings donated in 1961 by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The valued collection, which includes pieces from as far back as the 14th and 17th century, has been integral to the museum's educational function as university students, faculty, and art historians from all over the world come to study the works. The Family Day activities will include refreshments and the crafting of Renaissance-inspired picture frames in the first-floor classroom following an educational tour of the Kress Collection. This highly informative and engaging Family Day event at the Georgia Museum of Art will entertain parents and kids alike, so come out and see how you and your family will be inspired! 2) The museum isn't the only place to enjoy displays of inspired cultural expression in Athens, Ga this weekend- The Rialto Room will feature the latest segment of their "Go Green" Series benefitting the Oconee River Land Trust- A Songwriters in the Round event is set to take place this Friday night, July 15, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature songwriters of a Southern persuasion as all musicians fall under the country genre. Some past credits of the performers include: Mike Dekle, writer of hits "Scarlett Fever" and "Someone Must Feel Like a Fool Tonight" by Kenny Rogers;  Will Nance, writer of #1 Billboard hit "She's Everything" for Brad Paisley; John Ford Coley, writer and performer of hits "Love is the Answer," "Gone Too Far," and "Sad To Belong"; Byron Hill, writer of classics such as "Fool Hearted Money" by George Strait and many others. This two week event, running from July 9 - 21, is sponsored by P.L.A.C.E., an Athens non-profit committed to maintaining and fostering the growth of a healthy, well-connected local food culture, seeking to unite the Athens community in an appreciation of good food from local vendors.  The Taste Your Pie Contest event will take place this Saturday at the Athens Farmers Market around 10:00 a.m. Contest entry is open to all who provide $5, a pie and the recipe, contest tasting of all pies costs only $5 as well. Prizes will be awarded to the most delectable pies. Athens This Weekend: June 10-12

It's going to be another busy, fun weekend in Athens, GA! With options that appeal to every age and interest, the Classic City is the place to be this warm, summer weekend!

1) Spend your Saturday exploring the beauty of both nature and art in the State Botanical Garden with an Artist Walk of Forged from Nature: An Exhibition of Garden Gates. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., Andrew T. Crawford, the Atlanta-based artist responsible for the six finely-crafted, iron gates, will guide the walk. Attendees of the Artist Walk will follow Mr. Crawford through the gardens to each gate as he describes his nature-inspired designs and metalworking process. The six gates are appropriately named and themed after some basic natural elements: Bird Gate, Vine Gate, Sunflower Gate, Threaded Bar Gate, Corn Gate, and Tool Gate. So take a walk on the artist's side this Saturday to learn more about the exhibit and the art of metal working during the Artist Walk commencing from the conservatory at 11:00 a.m. in the State Botanical Garden. 2) The family days of summer continue this Saturday as the Athens-Clarke County Library hosts Explore Harry Potter's World Family Day from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. The Family Day event is set in celebration of the traveling National Library of Medicine exhibit, "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine." With storytelling, trivia, crafts, madrigal singers, and more, Harry Potter's World Family Day is sure to be nothing short of magical. Costume dress is encouraged so dawn your Hogwarts robes or your Medieval suit of armour and head to the ACC Library this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for a family fun day of Harry Potter magic and Renaissance science. 3) There are few ways to better start off a full weekend in Athens, Ga than by visiting Terrapin Brewery on a Friday afternoon for lots of delicious beer, live music, and fun with friends. This Friday evening, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., head to Terrapin to hear the musical styling of Macon-native, Louise Warren. Playing original and cover songs, the 20-year old singer-songwriter will serenade you with some passionate acoustic melodies as you sip your favorite summer ale. Bring a Frisbee or a blanket and take advantage of the beautiful weather in the outdoor area of the brewery. With tours running at 6:00, 6:30, and 7:00, enjoy a little educational insight into the brewing process. Ready, Set, AthFest! June 22 - 26, 2011

The schedule has been released and the good news is being spread- AthFest 2011 is set to stimulate, inspire and entertain us on all fronts of artistic festivity planned for the eagerly anticipated event. For almost a year, we have been patiently awaiting June 22 - 26, 2011 -- the return of Athens, Georgia's favorite music and arts festival, dreaming of the week when our most talented regional musicians and artists will come together again and illuminate the streets with the sights, sounds, and performances of their respective crafts. 

For those who will be experiencing it for the first time, AthFest is a festival to celebrate Athens, Georgia music and arts.  Local and regional musicians, artists, performers, and other creative minds will showcase their work throughout the downtown area of Athens, GA. As music is the force that drives the Classic City, it is also the focus of the festival featuring 3 outdoor stages hosting 3 days of shows from an impressive line-up of headlining acts at no charge to the public. Some very exciting performers headlining this year include: Futurebirds, the pensive alt-country band will stop back home in Athens from their tour promoting the blossoming success of their current album; Guadalcanal Diary, will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of their formation as pioneers of 80's Southern indie-pop; Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, the soulful blues rock group with honest, poignant lyrics will play the sounds of the South.

The second and main stage outdoor performances are just the icing on the AthFest cake, though. The "club crawl" event taking place Friday and Saturday night will feature a diverse line-up of local bands and artists performing at around 12 of the best music venues in town. Think 40 Watt, The Melting Point, Little Kings, Caledonia and more. The venue schedule features some exciting Athens favorites, both the weathered and up-and-coming alike, filling virtually every stage in the downtown area. Some exciting performances to look out for: Hope For A Goldensummer, the recently re-emerging folky sister sirens will bring their haunting Southern voices to Little Kings Shuffle Club; Modern Skirts, the still buzzing alt-rock band return their harmonic success to the The Melting Point; Reptar, the young, fresh electro-pop band of boys will beam their high energy to a sure-to-be-dancing crowd at the 40 Watt; Twin Tigers; the dynamic and melodic sounds of their strong Athens influences will be heard at Go Bar. These among a total of around 200 other amazing bands and artists performing in venues and outdoor stages throughout the 3 days of music make the options endless and the choices impossible.

In addition to an incredible musical agenda, the festival also showcases some very exciting comedy acts, dance performances, and film screenings. Notable events include: Laughfest comedy show, June 22 at the 40 Watt, the 2nd annual comedy showcase featuring nationally touring acts such as Dan Telfer and TJ Young with many other hilarious Athenians; WIRED 2011: Athens Dance Music Festival, June 25 at New Earth Music Hall, a showcase of the most talented regional electronic artists playing fresh variations of dubstep, experimental hip-hop, electro-house, and more; AthFest FilmFest 2011, June 22-26 at Cine, daily screenings of Athens-based rock docs, short films, teen screen, and more; Flagpole Music Awards, June 23 at the Morton Theater, the magazine's annual ceremony recognizes local bands across every genre and category who have displayed impressive musical creativity.

Another large component of the AthFest ensemble of events is the Artists Market which is made up of over 40 booths featuring the original artwork of around 50 local artists. Athens Art Bar - Pints and Paints

UPDATE, April 15:  UGA and Uga fans, get ready for G-Day with a painting project of Big Bad Bruce!  Tonight at 6:30 p.m.  Register here!

The idea of an art bar used to scare me. I have no artistic talent whatsoever and I thought adding any alcohol to the experience would lead to a muddle of paint on a canvas and a miserable experience. But I chose to face my fears on Saturday and try out Athens' new Pints and Paints with my friend Julie. By a landslide, it was the most fun I've had in a long time.

I didn't go to exercise my amazing artistic ability (trust me, I have none), I went for the experience and was overwhelmed by how much fun I had thanks to the energy and laid back atmosphere. There was no pressure to create a masterpiece, I could tell that the owner Abby Denham really just wanted people to enjoy themselves. The "Pints" part comes from the option to drink a little to help you relax and let your creativity flow. We could choose from two different wines, champagne, beer, or soft drinks.

Everyone paints the same thing at the same time while the instructor went through each step slowly and answered all of our questions with encouraging advice. The three hours went by quickly while we were entertained by our surprising artistic talent.

and really had fun.

If you are looking for something new to try in Athens, GA, I fully recommend Pints and Paints. Take a look at the monthly calendar to choose which painting you want to do. This is a great place for a fun night out, an adorable Athens date idea, or a private party for birthdays, weddings, reunions, and Greek life. Sundays are great days to take the whole family and Tuesday nights are only $20! So don't be afraid to give this place a try. FALL In Love With Athens!

2010 Digital Photo Contest

The Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau invites you to participate in our Fall 2010 Digital Photo Contest. Submit an original photo that you think captures the atmosphere of Fall in Athens, Georgia.

We're looking for your take on the season, so WOW us with photos of your tailgate, a beautiful landscape, or a rockin' event that you attended. All original, digital photography is eligible for submission into the contest.

The two winners, "Best Overall Photo" and "Fan Favorite Photo", will receive a prize package worth $250.00 and the recognition of having your photo and name prominently displayed on our websites. Your photo will be seen by thousands of people each day! The winning photos will also have the chance to be included in future projects by the CVB.

Athens This Weekend: May 28 - 31

This weekend in Athens is jam-packed with fun events in and around the Athens area! Get ready for a chance to see live college sports, interact with local artists, and celebrate Memorial Day!

The NCAA Tennis Championships continue this weekend starting on Friday, when the best collegiate tennis teams and student-athletes from across the country showcase their talents and compete for national titles. There's a game today (Friday) at 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday at noon, and Monday at noon and 2:30 p.m. Come out to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and enjoy the great weather while watching the teams duke it out for the National Championship title. On Sunday, ATHICA's spring exhibition, Deluge, comes to a close. Deluge is a study in how humanity reacts to the impacts of environmental forces beyond our control. A thought-provoking exhibit of paintings, photography, conceptual embroideries and a large sculptural installation, it consequently addresses global warming and land use issues. The final day will close with a Panel Discussion with visiting and local artists, Discussion of natural extremes and manmade mistakes, a Rain Barrel Making Demo, followed by a Porch BBQ. On Monday, come celebrate Memorial Day at Memorial Park from noon to 3 p.m.! Park activities for the day include concessions, inflatables, face painting, music and more. It's a great opportunity to have some holiday fun with the whole family for free! The Memorial Park pool will be open Memorial Day weekend from 1-5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and admission to the pool is $1 per person. Click here for more info.

Friday, April 9:

• It's time to Celebrate the Arts! The Athens Area Arts Council presents the biggest fundraising event of the year, where material-world art meets the runway to support the artist-designed bus shelters. The celebration will be held at Hotel Indigo and will include a runway of wearable art featuring exotic creations from local and emerging artists. The event is free and open to the public, but VIP runway seats are on sale for $40.

Saturday, April 10:

• Georgia Football is back in action! Come get a preview of the great things that lay ahead for the 2010 Bulldogs at the G-day Spring Football Game! The game annually features the Bulldog team split into the Red and Black squads. Tickets can be ordered at 12:30 p.m. on the day of the game at Sanford Stadium Gates 2, 4, 6 and the Main Gate located below the Sanford Drive Bridge. Kick-off benefits Hope Haven and starts at 2 p.m.

• The 12th Annual International Street Festival, presented by UGA's International Student Organizations, will feature colorful cultural displays from around the world, traditional costumes, dances and international bands. Collect "Passport" Stamps, watch musical and dance performances, and participate in hands-on activities with your children. Door prizes and giveaways will be available from local businesses.

• Enjoy a cold one after the 2nd Annual Terrapin Beer 5K Plus One More Mile. The race begins at 3:30 p.m. and will end at the brewery with a tour. Only $25 to compete!

Sunday, April 11:

• The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra heads to Athens! The UGA Performing Arts Center presents this program which features two of Tchaikovsky's great masterpieces. Russian guest conductor Vasily Petrenko, pianist Barry Douglas, and the ASO will bring excitement to these melodic treats.

• Calling all aficionados and novice wine lover alike! Athens Wine Weekend will be a treat for the senses featuring seminars with wine experts including Master Sommelier Brett Zimmerman, a Grand Tasting showcasing wines from around the world, and a gourmet seven-course meal with multiple wine pairings. The event benefits The Classic Center Cultural Foundation.

• This weekend presents the newest addition to the Bike MS cycling series in Georgia! Bike MS: Deloitte. Atlanta to Athens Ride is a two-day, fully-supported bicycle ride that will raise money to fight multiple sclerosis and help the Georgia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The 2nd annual "blvd.'s House of Fashion" is a fashion show showcasing summer looks from local boutiques such as Rouge, George Gibson, Flaunt and Agora. Food and beverages will be provided as well as music by The Big Fundamentals and DJ Winston Parker. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. at the Stan Mullins Garden located on 650 Pulaski St. Admission is only $8, and all proceeds benefit the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

Friday: The Athens Area Arts Council (AAAC) will host "Material World: Art Meets the Runway" from 7 to 11 p.m. at Hotel Indigo. This fashion show will feature textiles and wearable art from local designers as well as complimentary hors d'oeuvres from Athens area restaurants. Following the show, Sonny Got Blue will play in the Rialto Room. 50 percent of all bar sales benefits the AAAC. RSVP on Facebook!

• The UGA Performing Arts Center is proud to present Narek Hakhnazaryan, a 19-year-old cellist who won first prize in the 2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions! His two rewarding debuts were in Carnegie's Zankel Hall in New York and at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater in Washington, D.C. According to San Francisco Classical Voice, "he produces a powerful and colorful sound in all registers, nails every big shift and flashes all the virtuoso's tricks with insolent ease. He should have a stellar career."

• Treat your family to Exotic Birds & Animals on Planet Earth: Family Day at The State Botanical Garden! Roy Hodge from Exotic Paradise, Atlanta will travel to the State Botanical Garden this Saturday to educate and entertain families with his menagerie of exotic forest animals! Attendees will discover amazing facts and adaptations of exotic animals in a live animal presentation. Children and their parents can pet and take pictures with cockatoos, parrots, owls, monitor lizards, anacondas, boa constrictors and more!

Sunday, March 7:

• Head over to The State Botanical Garden this Sunday for the opening reception of Claire Clements' paintings exhibition Bottlebrush Buckeye and Beyond! Participate in a fun art critique exercise and interpret artworks currently on display. Claire's process, cut paintings, involves cutting mixed media painting on paper. Free to the public.

Ongoing Events:

• Do not miss your opportunity to view a colorful display of late winter flowers at the 18th Annual Hellebore Days at Piccadilly Farm in Bishop, Georgia! The public is invited to stroll the gardens and view thousands of Lenten Roses in full bloom in the 2.5 acre display garden. Hellebore Days has been featured in the New York Times and numerous other publications. For those unable to attend the event, the gardens will be open on Fridays and Saturdays during the spring season.

• Athens Creative Theatre presents "Bull in a China Shop," a Women's Repertoire Show and Dessert Theatre. When a houseful of sweet little old ladies discovers that a handsome bachelor lives across the street, they are delighted! When they learn that he is none other than Detective Dennis O'Finn, of Homicide, they are faced with the problem of how to attract his attention. The answer is simplicity itself: a nice, genteel homicide with a cup of tea as the murder weapon! Patrons will enjoy a dessert buffet at intermission.

• Paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media, large and small sculpture, works in clay and in fiber, jewelry, photographs, drawings, prints, and other works! The 35th Juried Exhibition at Lyndon House Arts Center showcases a wealth of Athens area talent. Over 740 art works by 291 artists were entered in the competition this year and 142 pieces were selected by this year's juror Ron Platt, the Hugh Kaul Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

• History comes alive at the State Botanical Garden this Friday. You will have the opportunity to meet John Bartram, America's first botanist and horticulturist- John Bartram Lives! Okay, so it is actually Pennsylvanian Kirk R. Brown. Enjoy this first-person biographical and historical presentation on the life of John Bartram. Prepare to be entertained, amused and educated as history comes alive! Attendees will have the opportunity to meet John Bartram at a reception from 6:30-7:30pm. • This Friday is your last chance to see the "Not Since You" movie premiere and screening at Beechwood Cinemas on Alps, and you do not want to miss out. This film was shot in large part in Athens and potrays Athens as itself! It is a film about a tight-knit group of college friends who graduated from NYU just prior to 9/11 and reunite years later for a weekend wedding in Georgia. Unresolved conflicts and love affairs spark again.

• America's most successful black stage play, "Beauty Shop," comes to the Classic Center Theatre this Saturday! This production served as inspiration for the recent film "Beauty Shop," starring Queen Latifah. The story continues as the curling irons get hotter, the gossip is juicier, the backstabbing is deeper, and the he-said/she-said tipping the scales. Get ready to fall out of your seat, because you'll be rolling in the aisles with mascara-running laughter.

• The UGA Performing Arts Center is proud to present "Coppelia," a charming and comic ballet performance by the Moscow Festival Ballet! Their tours throughout the world have presented many of ballet's greatest works featuring the highest artistic elements within the framework of Russian classic ballet. Enjoy lush melodies, beautiful costumes, and stunning virtuostic and athletic dancing.

• Football Friday Nights at Melting Point: This Friday Leon Russell (with special guest Bloodkin) feeds the city's live music craving before the Dawgs take on Arkansas. Doors open at 6 p.m., the show starts at 8:30.
• The Town & Gown Players present Company by Stephen Sondheim. The players open their Fall season with this Tony award winning musical comedy about the ups and downs of marriage. The show starts at 8p.m., tickets are $18 general admission and $15 for students and seniors. No worries if you can't make it this weekend, the show runs until October 4th.

Saturday, September 19th:

• Game day! Your number 20 Georgia Bulldogs face the S.E.C. West's Arkansas Razorbacks at 7:47 on ESPNU.
• Help a dog before you watch the Dawgs. The Greater Atlanta Volunteer Chapter of Canine Companions host their 7th annual Run for the Dogs at Sandy Creek Park. The organization raises and places assistance dogs with the disabled. The event includes a 5k and a 1-mile fun run (dogs welcome!). Registration begins at 8 a.m.
• The four-time national champion Georgia Equestrian team takes on Texas Christian at the UGA Equestrian Center in Bishop. Riding begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free and these ladies are talented!
• Athens Institute of Contemporary Art (Athica) opens their latest exhibit Free Press in Free Fall. The exhibit, featuring a variety of artists, explores the demise of the print news media. • The Athens' Heritage Walks Series digs deeper into the history of downtown Athens. Hal Cofer, a second-generation Athenian, brings to life historic downtown as a commercial center and cultural hub. The tour begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for ACHF members at $15 for non-members.

A Second Life for the Georgia Museum of Art

The Georgia Museum of Art, UGA's on-campus art museum may be closed for renovations until early 2011, but is still open to visitors...and you will not be accompanied by clouds of dust, the clamor of drills or masks as visitor attire; you can visit the museum virtually.


The museum recently launched a virtual museum in Second Life featuring paintings and drawings from its permanent collection. The virtual museum contains an almost exact replica of the galleries at the museum in Athens and is available to all residents of Second Life.

Second Life is a free, virtual online world that is imagined, created and maintained by its residents. Since its inception in 2003, Second Life has provided a world that supports all forms of expression and offers educational, business and entertainment opportunities to millions of users.

The Georgia Museum of Art can be found in Second Life by stopping by the UGA CTL Island: UGA's virtual world in Second Life. The Georgia Museum of Art hopes to utilize Second Life as an educational tool for its current audience as well as a new online audience.

What easier way to take part in one of the many places Athens has to offer than for free and from the comfort of your own home?

Calling all We Let the Dawgs Out Artists

Anyone who lives in Athens or has visited is familiar with the bulldog statues around town, right? The "We Let the Dawgs Out" public art project hasn't come and left town like cow statues and other exhibits that travel around the country-- the bulldog statues, painted by local Athens artists, have remained installed in locations around town and continue to provide smiles and great photo ops.

One of the artists, Robin, is seeking out other We Let the Dawgs Out artists for a brief video documentary project, and I wanted to help spread the word. See her post at the AthensWorld blog for her contact info and more details on her project. Check out the We Let the Dawgs Out website for photos and locations of the statues -- it's a great activity for the kids while they're on vacation, or any time!

"Museum Mile" House Tour: 1850s

The final stop on our tour is the former Ware-Lyndon House, which is now actually known as the Lyndon House Arts Center.
