What a wonderful weekend to be in Athens, Georgia! From grand re-opening celebrations to Athens' annual Wine Weekend festivities, there's no better place to be this weekend than the famous Classic City! 

Pints and Paints Grand Opening Celebration 

We love a good party, and this is one you don't want to miss! Pints and Paints is celebrating its two-year anniversary and newly expanded location on Friday, February 1. Athens Wine Weekend is finally upon us, and tickets for the Grand Tasting and Sunday Brunch are still available. Country Music Revue  

"I Love Rock n' Roll" is a song of the past as country music hits the Classic City scene. Savannah River Production kicks off its 2013 season at Morton Theatre with I Love Country: A Music Revue. This entertaining show features actors and actresses performing country classics from the Oakridge Boys, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and more. Looks What's Ahead for AthFest 2012

Livability.com just named Athens the #1 music scene outside of NYC, Nashville, and LA.  And the very best time to experience the Athens, Georgia live music scene in all its glory is AthFest each June, just around the corner June 20-24, 2012!

There are several big announcements for the 2012 AthFest music festival that we'd like to share with you!  First off, AthFest is taking the club crawl to the next level this year.  On Friday and Saturday of the festival, the Georgia Theatre, the 40 Watt Club, and the Melting Point will all be Wristband-Only venues. This adds even more value to the wristbands by giving you access to even more music venues at this year's AthFest club crawl.

1. Athens Home and Garden Show

With Spring approaching,  the spring cleaning and remodeling will soon begin! The Athens Area Home Builders Association's annual Home & Garden Show is the premier event for anyone considering remodeling their home, landscaping their yard or even building or buying their dream home. This event will take place at the Classic Center this Saturday from 10-5 p.m., and Sunday from Noon-5 p.m.

2. Menopause the Musical

Join Our Sisterhood! Four women at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra AND memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, and more! This hilarious musical parody set to classic tunes from the '60s, '70s and '80s will have you cheering and dancing in the aisles! See what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about for over 10 years! The show will take place at the Classic Center Theatre at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday. 3. The 8th Annual Foundry Park Inn & Spa Bridal Show and Tasting

Planning a wedding? Help those wedding bells ring a little easier with this exciting event taking place in Athens,Georgia! Over 20 of northeast Georgia’s premium wedding vendors will be on hand to plan your big day including: photographers, florists, formal wear, wedding planners, pastry chefs, entertainment, transportation companies and more! Sample the cuisine of our award winning culinary team while perusing the latest bridal fashions & decor for the entire wedding party. This event will take place on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door.

• Friday- Sunday: UGA Men's Baseball vs. Winthrop. Come support the Diamond Dogs as they take on the visiting team at Foley Field, in the heart of UGA's South Campus in Athens,GA. The game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
• Friday:  The Chieftains at the Classic Center Theatre.The Chieftans are the best known traditional Irish band in the world. The show will be at 8:00 p.m. 
• Saturday: Journey Through the Stars for Families at Sandy Creek Nature Center.Come see the planetarium program in the new Sky Center. We will journey through the night sky, exploring the great beyond.This event will be from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. and will be $7 for ACC families, and $10 for non- residents. This will be a fascinating experience for the entire family!

Athens Music and Art in the Garden!

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, in Athens, is one of our city's most scenic spots and is one of our most popular attractions year-round.  In summer, the Garden comes alive with music during the Sunflower Music Series, which brings some of Athens' best performers to the lovely lawn of the Flower Garden.  Spread out a blanket and relax with friends and family for a perfect summer evening. 

Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau intern Amanda Reyes headed out to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and caught the sights and sounds of Modern Skirts, plus the new Garden Gates art exhibition.

Say Good-Bye to July: Athens, GA This Weekend: July 29-31

Well Friends, the time has come to begin bidding farewell to the glorious summer season as July comes to an end this weekend in Athens, GA. The heat may stick around a while longer, but the days of summer freedom are dwindling quickly... so let's make the most of them! Athens, GA is up for one last fun, free adventurous weekend of July- are you?

1) Veer off the beaten path and take a culinary adventure to Roots Farm this Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31, for the Beaverdam SlowDown Dinner beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night. Discover the source of all your favorite Athens dining. Roots Farm is dedicated to growing fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables through natural and sustainable methods- they aim to distribute mainly to local establishments and to Community Supported Agriculture (kind of like a season pass to the farms produce- pay predetermined amount at beginning of season and receive fruit and vegetables throughout the year accordingly) The Beaverdam SlowDown Dinner at Roots Farm consists of two hour gourmet five course meal prepared by local chefs using locally grown foods, a short tour of the farm, and an open discussion about sustainable farming.

2) Stay up late at Terrapin for a late night tour and movie on the lawn beginning at 9:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30th, for a cause benefiting Film Athens- a non-profit dedicated to supporting and encouraging video production and digital media arts in the Athens community. The percentage night at Terrapin this Saturday night will cost $12, but will include eight ticket vouchers for 4-ounce brews and invitation to view "Planet 9 From Outer Space" on the lawn. So gather your friends and your favorite summer picnic blanket and prepare for lift-off at Terrapin Brewery!

3) Experience the signature sounds of the Athens, GA music scene this Friday and Saturday at The Melting Point with musical events like The 30th Anniversary Reunion of Phil and the Blanks (Friday) and Nomad Artists Present: Bomber City, Klezmer Local 42, and Ken Will Morton (Saturday). Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for food and drink service, so best show up early and make an entire evening of food, drink, and music fun!

The summer heat has been a huge and steady companion to all venturing outdoors in Athens, GA these last couple of weeks- greeting all who exit the relief of air conditioning with an enthusiastic, all-consuming hug of humidity. But our good friend, Sweltering Heat, will be giving us some much needed space this weekend in Athens, GA, so let's make the most of it! 1) Spend your Saturday morning in the midst of renewed classical antiquity and in the company of the little ones you love most at the Georgia Museum of Art Family Day event running from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The Family Day of July 16th will feature the Kress Collection, which includes 12 Italian Renaissance paintings donated in 1961 by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The valued collection, which includes pieces from as far back as the 14th and 17th century, has been integral to the museum's educational function as university students, faculty, and art historians from all over the world come to study the works. The Family Day activities will include refreshments and the crafting of Renaissance-inspired picture frames in the first-floor classroom following an educational tour of the Kress Collection. This highly informative and engaging Family Day event at the Georgia Museum of Art will entertain parents and kids alike, so come out and see how you and your family will be inspired! 2) The museum isn't the only place to enjoy displays of inspired cultural expression in Athens, Ga this weekend- The Rialto Room will feature the latest segment of their "Go Green" Series benefitting the Oconee River Land Trust- A Songwriters in the Round event is set to take place this Friday night, July 15, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature songwriters of a Southern persuasion as all musicians fall under the country genre. Some past credits of the performers include: Mike Dekle, writer of hits "Scarlett Fever" and "Someone Must Feel Like a Fool Tonight" by Kenny Rogers;  Will Nance, writer of #1 Billboard hit "She's Everything" for Brad Paisley; John Ford Coley, writer and performer of hits "Love is the Answer," "Gone Too Far," and "Sad To Belong"; Byron Hill, writer of classics such as "Fool Hearted Money" by George Strait and many others. Athens This Weekend: June 10-12

It's going to be another busy, fun weekend in Athens, GA! With options that appeal to every age and interest, the Classic City is the place to be this warm, summer weekend!

1) Spend your Saturday exploring the beauty of both nature and art in the State Botanical Garden with an Artist Walk of Forged from Nature: An Exhibition of Garden Gates. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., Andrew T. Crawford, the Atlanta-based artist responsible for the six finely-crafted, iron gates, will guide the walk. Attendees of the Artist Walk will follow Mr. Crawford through the gardens to each gate as he describes his nature-inspired designs and metalworking process. The six gates are appropriately named and themed after some basic natural elements: Bird Gate, Vine Gate, Sunflower Gate, Threaded Bar Gate, Corn Gate, and Tool Gate. So take a walk on the artist's side this Saturday to learn more about the exhibit and the art of metal working during the Artist Walk commencing from the conservatory at 11:00 a.m. in the State Botanical Garden. 2) The family days of summer continue this Saturday as the Athens-Clarke County Library hosts Explore Harry Potter's World Family Day from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. The Family Day event is set in celebration of the traveling National Library of Medicine exhibit, "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine." With storytelling, trivia, crafts, madrigal singers, and more, Harry Potter's World Family Day is sure to be nothing short of magical. Costume dress is encouraged so dawn your Hogwarts robes or your Medieval suit of armour and head to the ACC Library this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for a family fun day of Harry Potter magic and Renaissance science. June Delivers a Fantastic First Weekend!

Athens This Weekend: April 29 - May 1

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Head to Athens, Georgia for great events for all ages!

1) The 3rd Annual Antebellum Trail begins Wednesday, April 27 and lasts through Sunday, May 1. The trail winds through seven historic areas of Georgia to let you revisit the days of big front porches and slow living. Athens is the northern tip of the trail and offers tours of 16 historic districts and four house museums. This is a great opportunity to view Athens architectural styles and see the Church-Waddel-Brumby House, the oldest Athens residence. While you're in town, there are several other exciting events to check out!

2) The 32nd Annual Athens Twilight Criterium will be this Friday and Saturday. Join us for two full days of activities including: a Canopy Studio Trapeze Performance, live music, evening races, a 5K, BMX Jam, and kids races. The Twilight Criterium is a favorite race on the national cycling circuit because of its night races and the energy of downtown Athens. Although events last all weekend long, the men's and women's criterium races are held Saturday evening.

3) Check out the Athens Americana Festival this weekend at Little Kings Shuffle Club in downtown Athens. The four-night festival began Wednesday night and lasts through Sunday with an extended closing party at Hendershot's. STS9 Pre-Party Tonight at Terrapin Brewery

To kick off Sound Tribe Sector 9's two nights of concerts in Athens, Terrapin Brewery is hosting the official STS9 concert pre-party tonight, April 20 from 5:30 - 7:30. The Atlanta-based, instrumental band is performing at The Classic Center in Athens tonight and tomorrow night at 9:00. The pre-party will benefit Rock Against Cancer, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities for children and teens diagnosed with cancer to gain emotional support through music. The organization uses music as a source of healing and comfort during the intense hours of chemotherapy, treatments, and procedures in the hospital and at home.

Terrapin Brewery will host the official Sound Tribe Sector 9 concert pre-party to benefit Rock
Against Cancer on Wednesday, April 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

STS9 will perform two nights at the Classic Center on April 20 and 21. David Murphy, bassist and member of STS9, was recently diagnosed with cancer. In light of Murphy’s recent diagnosis, Terrapin Brewery and STS9 have joined forces to raise money for Rock Against Cancer. The pre-party will feature a performance by Noise[Org], a band from Auburn, Ala., a raffle that will include tickets to STS9’s performances at the Classic Center, autographed STS9 merchandise, PLAANT clothing by David Bywater, Conscious Alliance merchandise, iWallyphoto framed photographs, artwork by Jason Garcia, Jeff Wood, Andrew Wagner, Stephen Wells, and Christian Jaxtheimer and commemorative 16oz. Terrapin Brewery glasses. The collectable glasses will feature artwork by local artist David Hale.

The event coordinator, Adam LaHaie noted, “This is an extraordinary opportunity for our community to come together at Terrapin Brewery for a great cause. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer, so please join us to celebrate life and benefit Rock Against Cancer.”

Athens This Weekend: March 11-13

It's almost the weekend again! And for those of you looking for fun things to do while staying close to home, Athens has amazing options!

1. The Dalton Gang is performing Saturday night at Terrapin Beer Co. for your entertainment while you sample some of Athens favorite unique beers! Georgia's own Dalton Gang is a country/southern rock band with inspirations ranging from Johnny Cash to Lynard Skynard whose music is sure to complement award winning Terrapin beer. The show starts at 5:30 p.m.

2. If you're up for something a little more dramatic, an Irish musical group is performing Friday night at 8 p.m. Danu blends traditional Irish music and instruments with local music from the four corners of Ireland. 3. For something more relaxing, visit the Lyndon House Art Center's 36th Annual Juried Exhibition. This professionally-oriented art competition has already been judged and now you have a chance to take a look at 160 works from Athens area artists. The exhibit includes all types of art including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photographs, and more chosen by internationally know curator Carla Hanzal from Charlotte's Mint Museum. The exhibit will be open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Also, don't miss out on the 40 Watt Club's lineup for Saturday-- help Drivin' n' Cryin's Kevn Kinney celebrate his 50th birthday! If you haven't caught his all-star side gig with the Baseball Project, they'll be there too, so keep your eyes peeled for superstar guests!

Widespread Panic back in Athens, Feb. 10-11

Hard to believe, but it's been 25 years since Widespread Panic first came on the Athens music scene. To celebrate, the band will be back in their hometown for two nights of very special shows, February 10 & 11 at 7:30 p.m. Performing at The Classic Center has special ties for Widespread Panic, as the Center sits on the site of the former Mad Hatter Ballroom, where the band played its first official show February 6, 1986.

Tickets for these shows go on sale Saturday, January 8, at 9 a.m. They'll go fast, so be ready! Tickets will be available at The Classic Center box office, 300 N. Thomas St., downtown Athens, at www.ClassicCenter.com, or by calling 706-357-4444.

Tonight, Local Music Reigns in Athens

Local Bands featured at the Caledonia Lounge

I'm not a music aficionado. I listen to a mix of whatever is on the radio (R.I.P. 95.5), mos def cd's, and a shuffled iTunes library that I have neither the time nor inclination to organize. Most of the songs are listed by track number. This is why I was surprised to be invited to the Caledonia Lounge tonight to catch a show featuring some rising stars from Athens. Caledonia brings together Nashville's indie-pop group Heypenny and local bands Misfortune 500 and The Orkids tonight at 10:00 p.m. I had a chance to catch up with Chisolm Thompson, singer for Misfortune 500, to pick his brain on the inner workings of the group and on "making" it in the wildly diverse music scene of Athens, Georgia.

Thompson and lead guitarist Pascal Cureton met in highschool and played in several different projects together before meeting bassist Natalie Gazaway. They were acquainted in The University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art. The band found a fourth member, drummer Lemuel Hayes, through Myspace.

CCU: Misfortune 500 is a cool name. What's the story behind it?
CT: The name is also the title of a book by Bruce Nash about financial catastrophes in major companies that have ruined the lives of thousands of people; employees, stockholders, consumers, you name it. We felt that this was particularly relevant to anyone endeavoring to pursue a career in any creative industry in the current economy. The entertainment industry and particularly the music industry rewards artists whose work lacks critical content.

CCU: Personally, I'm a big fan of that sort of "britney-ized" pop sound. Does music need a message?
CT: As one who has the opportunity to speak in front of others, if an artist or entertainer doesn't use the opportunity for worthwhile discourse, it's sinful. In our opinion, if you are endeavoring to make a living as an artist for altruistic purposes, you have embarked into an enterprise seemingly destined to meet constant resistance.

CCU: Okay, I'll bite. So how do you come up with music that is interesting from a content standpoint as well as a musical one? What is your inspiration?
CT: We draw from our own experiences. Literature, life, cinema, and a feeling of confusion. The concept of a longing that matures into action is a big component of that.

CCU: What advice would you give to other local artists who are trying to make it in the music industry?
CT: Making it is what you make it. Be prepared for the terms "artist" and "making it" to be disconnected for some time. Success is completely different from fame and is always completely subjective. However, being an artist isn't a hobby, get serious about it, or get out of the way.

I think if you are committed to REALLY getting involved in the industry aspect of it. be prepared to work as hard as if you suddenly decided to invent the tire in a market already saturated with tires. You have Goodyears and Firestones to compete with. It's hard convincing people that your product is new and special.

CCU: That's a weird analogy but it works. Let's talk about the show tonight. What songs can fans expect to hear?
CT: You can expect to hear variations on sets of our originals. Be prepared for gravity and grandeur. We'll be playing a few songs from our upcoming album as well as material from Before This Winter Ends.


CCU: Where can fans get your music?
CT: Firstly, check with the local record stores. If they don't have it, they can get it. Seriously, just ask them. I'm always surprised to see our record in local shops from New York to L.A. Because of those smaller shops, our album landed in the hands of an SNL writer. Local shops are the best.

CCU: Well that's some amazing luck! Is there anything else you would like all of our blog readers to know before the show tonight?

There are lots of fun things to do this weekend, even if you're not into the AthFest scene. If you're not attending the festival, go to the First Annual Sculpture Festival at the Classic Center, venture to the Botanical Gardens for wine, hors d'oeuvres at Twilight Toasts in the Garden, or take the Full Moon Hike.

Athens This Weekend: June 10 - 12

This weekend in Athens is jam-packed with lots of fun events! There are several special events we think are really worth checking out, so clear your weekend calendar and head over to Athens!

Thursday: At 7 p.m., go to the inaugural screening for the Lyndon House Speakeasy Movie Club, where the legendary film Koyaanisqatsi will be presented in the LHAC Community Room. There is no admission charge, and refreshments will be available! This is the first of many films to be shown at the Lyndon House, so be sure to be there for this awesome, free event! There are also concerts going on at Go Bar, Caledonia, and Farm 255.

Friday: The Town and Gown Players bring Carousel, a Rogers and Hammerstein classic and Time magazine's Best Musical of the 20th century, to the Classic City this weekend! Come to the Athens Community Theater on Friday at 8 p.m. to enjoy a night of theatric fun! There is also a great show at the Melting Point on Friday, Sensational Sounds of Motown, so head on over there at 9 p.m. for some classic Motown beats. Tickets are only $12, so splurge on an appetizer and cocktail while you listen!

Saturday: The FIFA World Cup starts Saturday, so be sure you get up early, go to the Farmers Market, then head to a watering hole to watch the World Cup games! Games start at 10 a.m., and team USA takes on England at 8:30 p.m. I recommend going to either Farm 255, the Globe or Royal Peasant in Five Points to cheer our team on, but beware that places are sure to be full of plenty of rowdy football fans! If you’re not into soccer, be sure not to miss The Carolina Chocolate Drops live at the 40 Watt at 9 p.m.! The young string band plays in the centuries-old Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition, and has been nominated for the Americana Music Award for Duo or Group of the Year. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 on the day of the show. You can’t beat a venue like the 40 Watt, so it’s sure to be a great show.

On Saturday, come celebrate treasures that are uniquely ours at the Athens Farmers Market. All sustainable food is grown in Athens soil by local farmers. All crafts are made in our homes by local artists. Live music, merriment, and memories are shared with the young and the old alike on Saturday mornings at Bishop Park! The 32nd Annual Snake Day is this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.! This popular annual event features a fun-filled afternoon exploring the misunderstood world of snakes! Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about venomous snakes and identification, touch a snake, explore the amazing diversity of snakes and enjoy snake-related crafts and games! On Sunday at 3 p.m., Dr. Arvin Scott, a multi-award winning percussion artist, will bring his World Beat Nu Jazz to the Athens-Clarke County Library & Heritage Room! Athens This Weekend: May 28 - 31

This weekend in Athens is jam-packed with fun events in and around the Athens area! Get ready for a chance to see live college sports, interact with local artists, and celebrate Memorial Day!

The NCAA Tennis Championships continue this weekend starting on Friday, when the best collegiate tennis teams and student-athletes from across the country showcase their talents and compete for national titles. There's a game today (Friday) at 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday at noon, and Monday at noon and 2:30 p.m. Come out to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and enjoy the great weather while watching the teams duke it out for the National Championship title. On Sunday, ATHICA's spring exhibition, Deluge, comes to a close. Deluge is a study in how humanity reacts to the impacts of environmental forces beyond our control. A thought-provoking exhibit of paintings, photography, conceptual embroideries and a large sculptural installation, it consequently addresses global warming and land use issues. The final day will close with a Panel Discussion with visiting and local artists, Discussion of natural extremes and manmade mistakes, a Rain Barrel Making Demo, followed by a Porch BBQ. On Monday, come celebrate Memorial Day at Memorial Park from noon to 3 p.m.! Park activities for the day include concessions, inflatables, face painting, music and more. It's a great opportunity to have some holiday fun with the whole family for free!
