Athens This Weekend: November 9-11

Our football team heads to Auburn this weekend to clinch the SEC East, but we have plenty of fun planned for Athens, Georgia! Cheer on a UGA Sports team, celebrate the Athens' dining and arts scene with a Pot Luck or head to the Morton Theatre for a family-friendly musical.

What a great month for UGA sports! Men's Basketball kicks-off Friday night against Jacksonville & the Women's team plays Rutgers on Sunday! Don't miss Men's Tennis Bulldog Scramble all weekend & two Women's Volleyball matches! 

Smoke on the Mountain Play

This hilarious, award-winning  musical shares a message of faith, family and forgiveness. With heartfelt gospel songs and down-to-earth characters, "Smoke" is a celebration of bluegrass gospel at its finest. Watch the musical at the Morton Theatre Saturday at 7:30 or Sunday at 3.

Center Pot Luck Gourmet Meal

Join ATHICA & Citizen Advocacy Athens-Clarke (CAAC) for the Center Pot Luck. Food will be provided by 5&10, DePalma’s, The Grit, Home.made Catering, The National, and White Tiger with food from acclaimed Athens' restaurants & the option to purchase plates by local ceramicists Laura Cooper, Maria Dondero, Jennifer Graff, Nancy Green, Rob Sutherland, and Rebecca Wood as a keepsake. Expect a "Pot Luck" of local musicians to entertainment. Don’t miss this great community event with some of Athens’ finest food, art, and music and help support the programming at ATHICA and CAAC!

Friday

• Check out singer-songwriter Aslyn as she takes the stage at The Melting Point. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance & $10 at the door.
  
• If your Dad loves the college scene, take him to check out Perpetual Groove at the Georgia Theatre. The band plays another 2-day stint, sure to be packed with enthusiastic fans. 9 p.m. both nights. $20 gets you a 2-day pass, or $12 for a single show.
  
• Ready to try a new fitness craze? Try Laugh-a-Yoga! Helps produce changes in mood, confidence and health. 5:30 p.m. at the Mind Body Institute.

Saturday

• Athens Heritage Walk: Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery. This tour is the first in a series of guided tours celebrating Athens' designation as one of the National Trust's 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Each tour is guided by a distinctive Athens personality whose knowledge brings a unique and colorful perspective to our local history. The tour begins at 10 a.m.
• Check out "The Lost Son" Saturday at Morton Theatre. 3 & 7 p.m. This riveting play promises to change your life and strengthen your belief in family, fatherhood, and faith. Featuring Gary Jenkins and Gary Glenn of the group Silk. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for children & students, & $15 for seniors. Special discount on men's tickets in honor of Father's Day ($20).
• If your Dad is an art fan, come out for Athica Emerges III: Journeys. This exhibit will feature exciting new work by three young local artists, with new media, photo-based works and conceptual practices predominating. Opening weekend events include a public reception Saturday from 7 - 9 p.m. and performance art event on Saturday and Sunday.

Celebrate Hot Corner this May

Athens has many downtown hot spots, but "The Hot Corner" has to be one of Athens oldest and most beloved local traditions.

During the early 1900s, the corner of Washington and Lumpkin Streets, nicknamed "The Hot Corner," was the center of cultural life in the Black community. Today, the Hot Corner Association, non-profit organization, preserves this history by presenting the Hot Corner Celebration and Soul Food Fest.

The 9th annual Hot Corner Festival will take place Friday May 1 and Saturday May 2. Friday's festivities will include a concert in the Morton Theatre from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and are on sale at the Morton Theatre.

Saturday will include an all day street festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the corner of Hull St. and Washington St. Saturday night, return to the Morton Theatre from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. to view “Fashion: Imagination Unrestricted.” When a fashion design student has a short amount of time to finish her senior project, it is up to her imagination to get her out of the fashion dilemma. Fashion designs from local Athens and Atlanta designers and businesses will be shown. Tickets go on sale in April and they are $12 in advance.
