Fun & Free Family Destinations: Athens, GA

Looking for free family summer activities? Search no further, because the current issue of Georgia Magazine features a great article titled "North Georgia on a Dime: 10 Fun and Free Places to Take Your Family," and Athens, Georgia was thrilled to land not one, but two spots on the list!  The two selected Classic City attractions are the Georgia Museum of Natural History and Bear Hollow Zoo and Memorial Park.  We agree that these are indeed great, free spots for the family, as the Georgia Museum of Natural History contains a wealth of unique items, and Bear Hollow Zoo offers a quaint home to a wide array of wildlife.  For more ideas for the family in Athens, Georgia this summer, see our family blog post and website page!  The following information is directly from the Georgia Magazine article, which was written by Jacqueline Rosser.

#7: Georgia Museum of Natural History

"You'll find everything from bugs to birds to mammals and more in the large collections at the Georgia Museum of Natural History on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. The University's many specimens comprise the most comprehensive selection in the state. With so much to see at the museum, you'll find there is something for everyone. Tours are available by appointment, or you can stop by the Exhibit Gallery free of charge at any time the museum is open. 101 Cedar St., University of Georgia Campus, Athens. naturalhistory.uga.edu. If You Go:  The museum is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 12 p.m.-3 p.m. For visits less than 45 minutes, park in the green-marked spaces in lot S06, which is accessible from East Campus Road and Cedar Street. For guests wishing to visit for longer than 45 minutes, please see the museum's front desk attendant to purchase a $2.00 parking pass for the day.

#10: Bear Hollow Zoo and Memorial Park

"Before leaving Athens, head on over to Bear Hollow Zoo and Memorial Park to see Georgia's native wildlife up close. The zoo and wildlife preserve are home to many animals, including the bald eagle, great horned owl, wild turkey, black bear, white-tailed deer, American alligator and more.

      'Bear Hollow Zoo is one of the most popular places in Athens for families and a great deal because it is free of charge and open seven days a week. Everyone loves the shaded paths that lead them from one area of the zoo to the next. It is a particularly special place because all of the zoo residents have been deem unreleasable, so they couldn't survive in the wild, including two of our bears who were orphaned as cubs' says Cathy Padgett, public information coordinator, Athens Clarke County Leisure Services.

If You Go:  The park is open 8:00 a.m. to sunset on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to sunset on weekends and holidays, and the zoo 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Family Fun in Athens this Summer

Although Athens, Georgia may be best known for its nightlife and UGA Football, the Classic City's agenda is stock full of events and attractions that are ideal for a Georgia family getaway or a family staycation this summer.  From the beautiful scenery to unique concerts, these Athens attractions are essential to your plans and will surely be enjoyable for adults and children alike!

Downtown Athens' family-friendly summer festival, AthFest, is coming up on June 19th-23rd!  This celebration of music, art, film and family are five of our favorite days in Athens each year.  Over 150 bands will perform outdoors in downtown Athens alongside a variety of other attractions including an artists' market, a club crawl, and film screenings.  Kids will love this event as much as you will, as there's a special area just for them called KidsFest. KidsFest will have performers and activities intended for a youthful crowd.  The best part is that all of these performances, for adults and children, are free!  We encourage you to purchase a $20 wristband, however, which will provide entry to the club crawl and other special events.  We are offering hotel packages at Holiday Inn Express, Foundry Park Inn & Spa, and Hotel Indigo Athens.  The packages start at just $105 and include your hotel room reservation, wristbands, t-shirts, and AthFest CDs!  We are proud to share that AthFest was named a Top 20 Event by Southeast Tourism Society and one of the Top 10 Summer Music Festivals by Livability.com!  No matter the age range of your family, we think you'll agree that there's plenty of fun to be had by everyone.

What sounds better than a concert set in a beautiful outdoor garden on a warm Athens night?  We don't know either, so luckily the State Botanical Garden's Sunflower Series has us taken care of.  The Garden will host four shows this summer as follows:

• June 4th- Shonna Tucker and Eye Candy (Previous musicians with the Drive By Truckers; Alternative Country)

• July 9th- Caroline Aiken (Folk/Blues/Rock)

• August 20th- Grogus (Latin/World)

• September 17th- Arvin Scott Quartet (Jazz)

Purchase your tickets online for only $15 ($5 for kids) or buy a package of tickets to all four events for $50 (only $15 for kids!)  Your ticket includes admission to the show, light snacks, and wine and beer for those of age.  Grab the family and a picnic blanket and come prepared to kick off your shoes and relax!

There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy some quality family time in Athens while getting some exercise this summer!  In addition to concerts, the State Botanical Garden offers Full Moon Hikes.  Set out with a guide to explore elements of nature such as the moon, nocturnal creatures, and constellations.  The gorgeous surrounding gardens are an added bonus.  The Family Hiking Club, also at the Botanical Garden, will educate you and your loved ones about diverse birds and flowers each month through an exciting exploration of the surrounding woods, gardens, and streams from 9-11 a.m.  The cost of each of these events is $5 for an individual or just $15 for the whole family!

Another unique event for the family is Sandy Creek Park's bi-weekly Friday Night Paddles.  Everyone (ages 12+) is invited to explore Lake Chapman by moonlight on canoes and kayaks from 9-11 p.m.!  The cost is $8 for Athens-Clarke County residents without a boat or $5 for residents bringing their own boat, and $12 for non-county residents or $8 for non-county residents bringing their own boat.  A simple prepayment and registration is required and can be done via phone at 706-613-3631.

Among other favorite Athens spots is Memorial Park.  Pack a lunch and enjoy your day at the park, which is open 8:00 a.m. to sunset on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to sunset on weekends and holidays.  Within the park is the Bear Hollow Zoo Wildlife Trail, which is home to black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, owls, and many other species of wild, free-living animals.  The zoo is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.  Also, every Saturday from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., the exhibit hall is open to the public, featuring projects for younger visitors and live animals to see and touch.  Birchmore Trail, a mile-long nature trail, is also on the grounds and open for exploration.  

Southeast Clarke Park's 124  acres are full of attractions.  For starters, it houses the World of Wonder Community Playground, appropriately nicknamed the "WOW Park."  Within the giant playground, the castle-domes and swinging bridge will make kids feel like they have found their own personal kingdom.  The Tot Lot is a separated section of the park that is intended for the youngest children so that there's no need to worry about them crossing paths with the more rambunctious visitors.  For the adventurous guest, the Skate Park, also located within Southeast Clarke Park, is comprised of a ten foot, 4,500 square foot bowl and a street course including ramps, rails, grinding edges, and steps.  All skill levels are welcome to give it a go!  Among Southeast Clarke Park's other amenities are baseball/softball fields, a bicycle track, football/soccer/lacrosse fields, and tennis courts.  The park opens Monday-Friday at 8 a.m, Saturday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 12 p.m.  and closes at sunset daily.

When the heat is just too much, Active Climbing is conveniently open to the family and is located right here in Athens.  In addition to traditional and bouldering rock climbing equipment and rope walls, yoga classes are also offered.  Daily passes cost $12.95 for adults and $10.95 for kids 12 and under.  A deal that is great for first-timers is a $20 day-pass that includes a quick intro class and all rental gear for the day.   Friday night is Family Night, when belay classes are free!  Active Climbing is open Monday-Friday 4-9 p.m., Saturday 12-8 p.m., and Sunday 1-6 p.m.

Athens This Weekend: June 7 - 9

Another summer weekend is here, and that means Athens, Georgia has lots going on!  Among the numerous events, the Classic City is proud to have an exceptional abundance of musical talent and fun for the family this weekend!  Opportunities to see live performances downtown, participate in a cultural festival, cook your family's secret chili recipe at Terrapin, and enjoy Athens' beautiful nature make for an awesome weekend for everyone!

The Georgia Theatre is always a favorite Athens spot, especially during the warm summer months with its rooftop bar and food from the Branded Butcher. This Friday, however, is an especially exciting night at the venue, because Taj Mahal is performing!  Taj began playing blues music forty years ago and earned his title as an influential figure in late 20th century blues and roots music.  He has since been traveling the globe and expanding his style.  Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online or at the venue.  Taj Mahal's show at the Georgia Theatre will be a blast with his talent and sounds from all over the world!

Terrapin Brewery, another frequently visited Athens attraction, is having a special weekend as well!  In addition to their weekly Wednesday through Saturday brewery tours, this Saturday has been declared the 1st Annual IHNA Chili Cook-Off & Family Cookout! Bring the whole family for two of the most fun hours possible this weekend! From 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., hot dogs, hamburgers, side items, vegetarian options, and all of the chili made by the participating competitors will be served to guests ($7 per person or $20 per family). Live outdoor music by The Last Tycoon and a moon bounce will also be present on Terrapin's expansive grass. The proceeds will benefit Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens (IHNA), which is a non-profit organization that works with a network of local congregations to provide emergency shelter and vital services for homeless families with children in Athens and Northeast Georgia.  Bring the whole family to this event that will hopefully continue for many years to come!

It's that time of year again to celebrate the traditional center of black culture and commerce in Athens, Georgia: the Morton Theatre!  This weekend will be Hot Corner Celebration & Soul Food Festival's 13th year of soulful celebration.  The event begins on Friday night with a Gospel Praise Party in the Morton Theatre lasting from 6 - 10 p.m., and the festivities continue all day on Saturday (noon - 10 p.m.) on Washington Street in downtown Athens.  Live performances, showcases, games, speakers, a raffle drawing, and more will keep all in attendance entertained.  People of all ages will enjoy celebrating culture and diversity in the Classic City this weekend!

Head to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia on Saturday morning from 9 - 11 a.m. for the Family Hiking Club! Sign the family up to explore the beautiful gardens and trails for a relaxing and educational Saturday morning. Along the way the guests will play fun environmental and sensory games as they discover interesting facts about plants.  Pre-registration is required, so call to book spots the whole family for $15 or individuals for $5 each.   Kids under age 3 are free.  Wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and get ready to explore!

University of Georgia College of Education professor Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor is hosting Seat in the Shade: Summer Poetry Reading Series- a week of poetry reading and discussion of the poetic craft during the days of June 6-13. The reading this weekend by Stephen Corey, Jenny Gropp Hess, The GA Review Team will occur on Friday night at The Globe at 7:00 p.m.! This is the celebration's second year running, and all performances are free of charge, so check it out!

Yet another musical icon is coming to the Classic City this weekend!  On Sunday night, Jake Shimabukuro: World Class Ukulele Master will blow guests away at The Melting Point with his flawless, passionate style.   Start your week on an inspired note with Shimabukuro's globally-practiced style! Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 8.  Get your ticket ($25 in advance) while they last!

Athens This Weekend: May 18-20

The weekend is finally here! With the school year winding down and the official start to the summer season just around the corner, this weekend is the perfect chance to get the family out to enjoy the gorgeous weather. Come participate in various Athens GA events ranging from outdoor sports and adventures to more relaxing family-friendly events. Here are a few ideas for this weekend that will hopefully spark your interest!

1. Friday Night Paddles at Sandy Creek Park

Join in for an evening paddling around Lake Chapman at Sandy Creek Park on Friday, May 18 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. The program is offered to those ages 12 years and older, and the cost is $8 for Athens-Clarke County residents without a boat, or $5 for Athens-Clarke County residents who come bringing their own canoes or kayaks. Non-county residents will be charged $12, or $8 if bringing their own boat. Registration and payment are required in advance and can be made by calling 706-613-3631. Be sure to reserve your spot today!

2. Winterville Marigold Festival

This annual festival began 30 years ago as an attempt to bring citizens together to refresh and beautify the town of Winterville. Come out for the traditional Country Breakfast, which begins at 7 a.m., followed by the Marigold 5k at 8 a.m. and then music and other activities all day from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Bring the kids to enjoy a parade, crafts, street dancing, delicious food, and much more!

3. NCAA Tennis Championships

Come experience the thrill of watching some of the country's best collegiate athletes as the University of Georgia hosts the 2012 NCAA Tennis Championships here in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The men's quarterfinals will be held on Sunday, May 20, followed by the semifinals on Monday, May 21, and the finals on Tuesday, May 22. The women's quarterfinals are on Saturday, May 19, followed by the semifinals on Monday and the finals on Tuesday. Be sure to come out and cheer on the Dawgs!

Athens This Weekend: March 23-25

Spring is definitely in the air in Athens,GA! With the weekend finally here, it is time to enjoy this beautiful weather with exciting plans. Athens has so much to offer this weekend. 1. BreastFest Athens

Join BreastFest Athens on Saturday, March 24 from Noon – 7:30 p.m. at Terrapin Beer Co. for a day of local beer, food and music, while supporting breast cancer awareness and breast health. Enjoy live music on two stages from Bloodkin, Kyshona Armstrong, Betsy Kingston & The Crowns, efren, Adam Payne, Charlie Garrett Band, Déjà Vu, Mark Cunningham and the Nationals, 90 Acre Farm, Chris Moore, Clay Leverett, Dodd Ferrelle, The Granfalloons, Betsy Franck and the Bareknuckle Band and Athens Showgirls Cabaret, as well as food from local restaurants, brewery tours, beer tastings, a huge silent auction and raffle, pink hair extensions from City Salon, and tons of kids activities! Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door, and kids are FREE! Don't miss out on this exciting event that benefits a great cause!

2. Fiddler On The Roof

Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler On The Roof has been lauded by critics again and again, and won the hearts of people all around the world. Filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, which includes "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset," Fiddler On The Roof is a timeless classic. This entertaining performance will be Saturday, March 24 at the Classic Center Theatre at 8:00 p.m. Fiddler On The Roof will definitely be a show that the whole family will enjoy. Tickets range from $9-$65, so get yours while they last!  

3. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Come out and enjoy a beautiful program by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Leonidas Kavakos, who joins the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for this concert both as conductor and soloist, has established himself as a violinist and artist of rare quality, known at the highest level for his virtuosity, superb musicianship, and the integrity of his playing. After a recent performance in London, The Times called him a passionate and "entirely accomplished performer." Kavakos is also becoming increasingly recognized internationally as a conductor of rare gifts and musicianship. For the Atlanta Symphony's spring Hodgson Hall visit, the program will feature two works by Mozart, the Violin Concerto No. 3 and the Symphony No. 34, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. This event will be Sunday, March 25 at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center--Hodgson Concert Hall at 3:00 p.m. Tickets range from $45-$55.

• Benefit for Athens PowerDawgs: Come out and support the Athens PowerDawgs while enjoying great performances! This event is a Fundraiser for Athens' own wheelchair soccer team. All ages show with special performance by The Athens Band, student bands, as well as performances by FlameThrowers, Surf Band, Thieves Market, and 706. This will take place on Saturday at The Office Lounge from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m.There is a $5 suggested donation, that will benefit a great cause! 
• Family Day: Fabric Fun: Come see the exhibition "Pattern and Palette in Print: Gentry Magazine and a New Generation of Trendsetters," then head to the Michael and Mary Erlanger Studio Classroom to create colorful patterns and design your own fabric. This is something to whole family will enjoy! This event will take place on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Georgia Museum of Art.There will be no admission charge, so bring out the entire family! 
• The 2nd Annual GHSU/UGA Medical Partnership Golf Tournament: Scramble with a shotgun start. Tickets are $95 for an individual, and $340 for a team. This fee includes the greens fee, beverages, lunch, snacks and contests. Awards will be given for: Closest to the pin, Longest Drive, Winning Player, Winning Team. The 2012 proceeds will benefit the Children's Specialty Services at St. Mary's Healthcare System & the academic endeavors of the students at the Medical Partnership.This event will take place on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Athens This Weekend: March 9-11 2012

After a long week, the weekend is finally here! It's time to get out of the house and enjoy a fun-filled weekend with family and friends in the beautiful Classic City. Athens, GA has something to offer to everyone. With anticipated concerts, exciting sports events, and activities for the whole family, we know that your weekend in Athens, GA will be nothing short of amazing. Here are a few ideas that will hopefully spark your interest!

1. Wet Willie CD Release:

Foundry Entertainment & Music Matters Entertainment present Wet Willie CD Release for "Miles of Smiles," the first live Wet Willie album since "Left Coast Live." Wet Willie, after The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, was the hardest-rocking of the Southern bands to come to national attention in the '70s. This concert is one you won't want to miss! Their new music is definitely a crowd pleaser. All tables and seating at The Melting Point are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The show will be Friday at 8:00 at the Melting Point. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $17 at the door. Come out for a night of rock and roll and fun!

2. Exotic Birds and Reptiles on Planet Earth- A Family Festival

Bring the family out for an exciting day learning about rare and special creatures! Roy Hodge from Exotic Paradise will educate and entertain family members with his menagerie of exotic forest animals. Discover amazing facts and adaptations as well as conservation concerns of cockatoos, exotic parrots, spectacled owls, monitor lizards, anacondas, boa constrictors and more! Following his presentation, you and the family can participate in hands-on activities and crafts to learn more about forest of our planet. This Family Festival will be fun for the entire family! It will take place this Saturday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Tickets are only $5 for an individual, and $20 for a family. Children under 2 years of age are free! 

3. Gym Dogs vs NC State

Join the legendary ten-time National Champion Gym Dogs in Stegeman Coliseum for high-energy athletics and first-rate showmanship as they take on NC State. The Georgia gymnastics team enters the month of March and the final week of the regular season ranked No. 5 in the GymInfo Top 25. Experience the high energy and exciting crowd of a Gym Dog meet while cheering on the Dogs at the home finale.

• Saturday: March for Meals 5K at Athens Community Council on Aging. The ACCA in conjunction with Meals on Wheels Association of America will celebrate March for Meals with a 5K fundraiser. The 5K is organized by Classic City Races and will be the kick off to the afternoon of Railroad Days. All proceeds of the March for Meals 5K will benefit the local Meals on Wheels program. You can pre-register for this event for only $20, and register the day of the event for $25. 
• Saturday: Railroad Days  at  Athens Community Council on Aging.  This  family-oriented event is a nod to its history as the former Southern Railways passenger station. This year, Railroad Days is expanding to celebrate other modes of transportation. There will be a model train display by the Athens Bend Track as well as a fire truck, police car, antique car show, VW club cars, and some other fun modes of transportation. There will also be bar-b-que, inflatables, tractor rides, and other fun activities for children of all ages. Bring out the family for an exciting, fun-filled day! This event will be this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, or $20 for a family of 5.
  
• Saturday: Open House at the Log House at Sandy Creek Nature Center and ENSAT Center.   Explore the past as you visit our circa 1810 Log House. Warm up by a fire and enjoy activities from long ago. Come for a few minutes or stay for a couple of hours. This will take place Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and there will be no admission charge. This event is perfect for the entire family!

2. Menopause the Musical

Join Our Sisterhood! Four women at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra AND memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, and more! This hilarious musical parody set to classic tunes from the '60s, '70s and '80s will have you cheering and dancing in the aisles! See what millions of women worldwide have been laughing about for over 10 years! The show will take place at the Classic Center Theatre at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday. 3. The 8th Annual Foundry Park Inn & Spa Bridal Show and Tasting

Over 20 of northeast Georgia’s premium wedding vendors will be on hand to plan your big day including: photographers, florists, formal wear, wedding planners, pastry chefs, entertainment, transportation companies and more! Sample the cuisine of our award winning culinary team while perusing the latest bridal fashions & decor for the entire wedding party. This event will take place on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door.

• Friday- Sunday: UGA Men's Baseball vs. Winthrop. Come support the Diamond Dogs as they take on the visiting team at Foley Field, in the heart of UGA's South Campus in Athens,GA. The game will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
• Friday:  The Chieftains at the Classic Center Theatre.The Chieftans are the best known traditional Irish band in the world. The show will be at 8:00 p.m. 
• Saturday: Journey Through the Stars for Families at Sandy Creek Nature Center.Come see the planetarium program in the new Sky Center. We will journey through the night sky, exploring the great beyond.This event will be from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. and will be $7 for ACC families, and $10 for non- residents. This will be a fascinating experience for the entire family!

Athens This Weekend: February 10-12

It's finally the weekend! After a long week, I know I am ready for an exciting and eventful weekend, and I'm sure you are too! Luckily, there are so many exciting events taking place this weekend in Athens,GA. Get your planners ready, because the Classic City will guarantee you a great time!

1. Original Tribute to the Blues Brothers 

The Classic Center Theatre presents the legendary Original Tribute to the Blues Brothers! Jake and Elwood Blues will be accompanied by the sassy Bluettes to perform all of your favorite songs including, "Everybody," "Shake Ya Tail Feather," "Sweet Home Chicago," "Think," "Respect," "Gimme Some Loving," along with so many more. So don the sunglasses, dig out your best pork pie hat, and buff up those dancing shows for a night of the best music, moves, and comedy! The show will be Friday, February 10, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and prices range from $9-$65.

2. Athens Kids Expo

Athens Kids Expo is a fundraising event benefiting the Wee Read Program of United Way of Northeast Georgia. This event is perfect for a family-fun day! Your children will be beyond excited when they hear what this event has to offer. The Athens Kids Expo will feature fabulous entertainment, face painting, bounce houses, balloon artists, a petting zoo, and more! There will be products and services for the entire family including educational products, toys and hobbies, health care services and products, cosmetics, jewelry, apparel, music and entertainment, arts and crafts, safety products and services, schools and daycare services, summer camps, and much more. Whew! This exciting event will be taking place Saturday, February 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. So bring out the entire family and enjoy a fun-filled day! 

3.UGA Women's Softball Red & Black Showcase

The University of Georgia's Softball Team will open its 2012 season by hosting the Fifth-Annual Red & Black Showcase this weekend at Jack Turner Stadium! The first game will be against Army on Friday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m. You can enjoy additional games throughout the weekend as well vs. Utah State, St. John's, Campbell, and North Carolina State. So come out and support Georgia Softball for another exciting season! 

Additional Events taking place in Athens,GA:

• Bring the family out to the "Owl Prowl" Friday, February 10 from 6:30-8:00 a.m., for an evening hike. You will search for the owl that inhabit the woods of Athens, GA, while learning about these fascinating feathered nocturnal animals. This event will take place at the Sandy Creek Nature Center.
• Grains of Sand will be performing at The Melting Point Friday, February 10, at 8:00 p.m. This band's desire is to keep the great music of the 60's and 70's around for everyone to enjoy-the young and old! Tickets are $10 in advance and will be $12 the day of the show. You can also reserve seating on the mezzanine level on a first-come first-serve basis. There will be tables of two available for $30 and tables of four available for $60. Come out and enjoy a night of fun, great music, and dancing! 
• Let the King romance you on Saturday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m. Buffalo's Southwest Cafe in Athens, GA,  will be featuring the Elvis-Burning Love Valentine's Show. Enjoy a romantic evening with delicious food from their full menu.
• The Senior Adults Sweetheart Prom will be Sunday, February 12, at 4:00 p.m. This romantic event will be held at Lay Park. Come and enjoy an evening of dancing, listening to soft music, socializing and light refreshments.This is guaranteed to be a good time!

“Deck the Hollow” Holiday Light Show at Athens' Bear Hollow Zoo

Don't miss this great new holiday event for families!  Deck the Hollow Holiday Lights takes place nightly from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Bear Hollow Zoo from Saturday, December 10 through Sunday, December 18. The community is invited to celebrate the holidays in lights. Activities include live music, story telling, animal encounters, concessions available for purchase, and photo opportunities in the zoo illuminated with holiday lights.

Admission fee is $3 per person, ages 2 and under free. Registration is not required.

Fun and Fit: Five Ways to Stay Active in Athens, GA

There you are again, at your usual gym, running on the treadmill just like you do three times a week. The TV in front of you is turned to a news channel discussing the latest headlines, but the volume is so low that all you can do is read the scrolling text at the bottom. You count down the minutes left in your workout, more ready for it to be over than you are proud of yourself for making it this long.

Sound familiar? For most people, this might sound a lot like your normal workout routine. I personally got so bored with this situation years ago that I stopped visiting a gym altogether. And even though I'm a college student who walks to class and around campus every day, I found that I still needed to get in a little more exercise, especially due to the fact that I tend to follow the diet of your typical college student (pizza at 2 a.m.? Why not?).

The title of this post might be a little cheesy, but I think those three words that begin with "F" are very important. Everyone knows it's important to be fit, but is there any reason we can't have fun while doing so? And five is significant because that shows just how many ways there are to stay active and have fun while doing so here in Athens, GA.

1) Active Climbing. Whether you have been rock climbing for years, or are eager to finally learn how, Active Climbing is the indoor activity in Athens, GA, for you to tone your arms and legs, defy gravity, and beat the summer heat all at the same time. Their indoor climbing wall gym features state-of-the-art climbing walls for all ages and experience levels.

Active Climbing offers a variety of special deals and discounts for both Athens residents and college students: Monday is Ladies Night, Wednesday is Student Night and Friday is Family Night. Hours vary during the week, but you won't want to miss a Tuesday or Thursday night, where it's "Climbers' Night." The gym is open until midnight and promises "crazy music and good times!" This makes Active Climbing the coolest place to be in Athens, GA, on a Thursday night.

2) Big Dogs on the River. There's nothing better than kayaking down a lazy river on a warm summer afternoon in Athens, GA, enjoying the cool water beneath you and the scenery as you float by. And if you can get some exercise in too, what could be better? Kayaking is a surefire way to tone your shoulders and back muscles, and the glistening water droplets both make your toned arms look that much better and help cool you off.

At Big Dogs on the River, you can enjoy the beauty of the Middle Oconee River and take a one or two hour kayaking trip right here in Athens, GA. They offer kayaking rentals and river trail service, as well as a peaceful picnic and recreation area where you can relax after your trip downstream. The cost is $15 per person on weekdays and $20 on weekends, but the day of relaxation and exercise you'll get from your kayaking trip is worth every penny.

3) Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail. If your idea of fun is getting up close and personal with some of Athens' native wildlife, then look no further than Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail. Located within Memorial Park, Bear Hollow is a small zoo that is home to over 120 species of animal, including bears, bobcats, river otters and owls, just to name a few. Birchmore Trail, a mile-long nature trail, runs through the zoo, giving you plenty of opportunity to walk while observing some of Georgia's local critters. The Athens zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is free to the public. If you get a chance, visit the zoo on the second or fourth Saturday of each month for a special guided tour of the zoo and a chance to get up close and personal with some of the zoo's furriest friends.

4) Skate Park of Athens. People often forget just how great skating is as a form of exercise. It's a great cardio workout, not to mention the anaerobic benefits. If you get tired of running, then skating is a great alternative. And whether you're the next Tony Hawk or can only barely manage to stand up on rollerblades, you'll be sure to enjoy the skate park right here in Athens, GA. This 14,000 square foot facility at Southeast Clarke Park also welcomes skateboarders and BMX bikers, so no matter what type of wheels you like to ride on, you're welcome at the skate park. The park is open every day from 8 a.m. until dark, and is free to the public.

5) World of Wonder Community Playground. Whether you're a kid at heart, or you actually have several children of your own, nothing will light up a child's eyes like the World of Wonder playground. Constructed in 2004 by 1,500 volunteers, it is the largest volunteer built playground in the state of Georgia, and is proud to call Athens its home.

Complete with almost two acres of playscapes, mazes, slides, swings, bridges, tunnels, and climbing walls, there will be no end to things for children to entertain themselves with, and it's certain that they'll be exhausted by the end of the day. You might be as well, after chasing them around a park of this size. The playground also features an enclosed toddler area, gardens, and outdoor children's art. The park is free to the public and is open during daylight hours seven days of the week. For family fun in Athens GA, the World of Wonder playground is a great way for children and parents alike to have fun as well as enjoy this wonderful contribution to our city.
