Exhibits at the Georgia Museum of Art

Unleash your inner artist this weekend as you explore the expansive galleries at the Georgia Museum of Art! These exhibits highlight a variety of countries, ranging from sub-Saharan Africa to the Soviet Union. See the beauty for yourself on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Can't make it this weekend? No worries! The Museum is open during the week as well. Be sure to visit the GMOA website for full gallery hours.
 

Canopy Aerial Dance 

Canopy Dance Studios presents an aerial performance that's both thrilling and family-friendly. Featuring dancers from right here in Athens, Georgia, this annual performance incorporates trapeze, fabrics and other invented flying apparatus that are sure to impress! And the best part? There are four shows over the weekend to fit even the busiest of schedules: 8 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday. Don't miss out on this exciting local performance!

Venice Baroque Orchestra 

Europe has officiatelly made its way to Athens, Georgia! The Venice Baroque Orchestra is one of Europe’s premier ensembles devoted to to period instrument performance--and trust us, you don't want to miss this rare Classic City show! In fact, after an appearance at the National Gallery of Art, the Washington Post praised the group’s “percolating energy and lithe, silvery tone.” Enjoy the music for yourself this Sunday at 3 p.m.

Museum Mix @ GMOA

Wednesday night October 24, The Georgia Museum of Art hosted Museum Mix, a spectacular event designed to celebrate the arts in a casual setting. From 8 to midnight, guests danced, mingled, and explored the exhibits currently featured in the galleries.

One of my closest friends is a volunteer docent at the Museum and I always enjoy attending their events. The University and Athens are lucky to have such a widely respected institution to celebrate and enjoy!

Guests were welcomed with complimentary beverages and hors d’ouvres from Earth Fare. The dips were a hit! Outside, people danced surrounded by the Defiant Beauty: The Work of Chakaia Booker sculptures created from recycled materials.  It was unlike any event I’d ever attended. The idea of laughing and dancing at a museum may seem strange, but art is about enjoying life in all its forms! GMOA definitely understands that idea.

My favorite exhibit on display were the polyester resin sculptures in the De Wain Valentine: Human Scale. These huge rounded pieces were an incredible feat of artistic creation; some measured eight feet tall! I just stood in the gallery for about fifteen minutes in awe.The next Museum Mix is scheduled for April 25, but do yourself a favor and visit GMOA soon!

Third Thursday: Athens Arts Attractions Collaborate on Expanded Programming

We've got great news for art lovers . . . Athens, Georgia, already known as a Top Arts Destination, has expanded the opportunities to enjoy great  events and exhibits at many of our favorite arts venues.  Here's the scoop, recently released by Michael Lachowski at the Georgia Museum of Art:

Six of Athens’ established venues for visual art are introducing “Third Thursday,” a monthly evening when art can be viewed in the evening hours on the third Thursday of the month. The GeorgiaMuseum of Art and the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia; the Lyndon House Arts Center, GlassCube & Gallery@Hotel Indigo-Athens and Ciné in downtown Athens; and Athens Institute for Contemporary Art (ATHICA) in the Chase Park Warehouses near the Boulevard neighborhood will be open from 6 until 9 p.m. on those days unless they are between installations or closed for a holiday or weather emergency.

The six art establishments will maintain a calendar of their programming at a soon-to-be-launched website, www.3Thurs.org. The website will provide links to the venue resources and a Google Calendar of all their exhibitions, receptions and events, such as kids’ events, lectures and gallery talks. Some opening receptions and special features will occur on Third Thursdays, but they will endeavor to prevent conflicts of critical exhibition elements.

The first iteration of Third Thursday will be on September 20. Opening receptions will be offered at the Lamar Dodd Schoolof Art galleries and at Ciné. ATHICA will be in-between exhibitions, but is opening to reveal its new logo and will offer new t-shirts for purchase and a performance of experimental ambient music. The Georgia Museum of Art, LyndonHouse Arts Center and Gallery@Hotel Indigo will be open with current exhibitions on view.

Athens This Weekend: May 25-27

The weekend is almost here, and there are plenty of events in Athens GA to get out and enjoy! Grab some friends for a Friday night concert, then spend Saturday and Sunday out with the family. Be sure to check out these events to help plan your weekend!

1. Patterson Hood & The Downtown Rumblers

Head out to the Melting Point in Athens to see local artist Patterson Hood and his band the Downtown Rumblers perform Friday night. Come hungry and enjoy a fabulous dinner, as well as a fully stocked bar! Doors open at 6, with music beginning at 8:15 p.m. by the MOTHS. Patterson Hood goes on at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 if bought in advance, or $18 if purchased at the door. Ages 18 and older admitted only. 

2. Athens Farmers Market

Bishop Park hosts the Athens Farmers Market every Saturday morning on the basketball courts, beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting until noon. This non-profit organization features food by local farmers, work by local artists, and music by local musicians. Bring the family out to experience this unique Athens tradition, and come early for the best selection!

3. A Divine Light: Northern Renaissance Art

Spend a weekend afternoon at the Georgia Museum of Art viewing "A Divine Light: Northern Renaissance Paintings from the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery". This exhibit features 28 paintings, all designed to allow the viewer an intimate experience with the devotional art that defines the Renaissance period of the 15th and 16th centuries. The museum is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and on Sundays from 1-5 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $3. GMOA is also offering free tours of this exhibition for church groups and others. Call  706-542-4662 to schedule one today!

What summer plans does your family have in store?

New Teen Program at Georgia Museum of Art-- and it's FREE!

Great news from the Georgia Museum of Art!  Michael Lachowski, the Museum's Public Relations coordinator, tells us about a new teen program:

Responding to an audience underserved by museums, the Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA) at the University of Georgia has created a new program specifically for teenagers. The first Teen Studio Night is scheduled for Thursday, May 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Teens can join GMOA editor Mary Koon and textile designer Susan Hable as they discuss the exhibition "Pattern and Palette in Print: Gentry Magazine and a New Generation of Trendsetters," then participate in a fabric design workshop inspired by the exhibition.
"Pattern and Palette in Print" is a collaborative exhibition featuring work by students in the fabric design program at UGA's Lamar Dodd School of Art. Students took inspiration from the 1950s menswear periodical Gentry and were asked to create a color palette and design their own patterns based on their studies of the magazine and other 1950s-era media. Koon and Hable served as co-curators of the exhibition along with Clay McLaurin, fabric design chair at the art school.
"This is a really great chance for teens to work alongside successful professionals in the field and get authentic hands-on experience," said Melissa Rackley, who organizes community programs for GMOA's education department.

This program provides a unique opportunity for teenagers to tour the exhibition and participate in an individualized workshop with the co-curators. Pizza will be served and space is limited. Call the museum at 706.542.GMOA (4662) to reserve your spot.

Fun Free Finds in Athens for the Empty Wallet

There are times when I want to leave my apartment and experience the fun and character of Athens, GA...and then I remember I have very little funds to do so (this usually occurs after having to purchase textbooks -- fellow college students, I know you understand this feeling!). Usually, when this situation arises, I find myself sitting on the couch, flipping through TV channels, and longingly looking out the window at the clear blue sky.

However, this behavior stops now! I've finally discovered a number of things to do that take very little toll on the wallet, all of which do not skimp on the fun despite the fact they do not require too large a chunk of your change. These super free and cheap deals are great for everyone and are a must-do for all Athens GA  residents and visitors. Ready to save money and still have a good time? Turn off that TV and read on!

1. The Memorial Park and Bear Hollow Wildlife

Trail is a unique facility in Athens. There are around 120 species of Georgia wildlife in the zoo - including bears, otters, bobcats, and more!) - and a mile-long nature trail also located on the grounds. This is a great place for kids to go, and the area even has an exhibition hall in which younger guests can enjoy different kid-friendly exhibits as well as interact with some of the animals. The facility hosts many special events and programs, and you can even book your next birthday party with them if you're feeling like doing something a little different for your birthday celebration!

2. Love food and music? Don't miss out on the Athens' Farmers Market that takes place twice a week in two different locations. On Saturday morning, it is located at Bishop Park, and on Tuesday night, you can find the market at Little Kings Club. This is a fun way to get your grocery shopping done, check out some local Athens vendors, or even just enjoy some local musical talent. No matter what you go for, you will be guaranteed to have a good time - and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that only fresh Athens produce is up for sale! This is definitely one of the best ways to support your community every week.

3. Looking to enjoy the outdoors? Be sure to make some time for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, one of Athens' most visited attractions. You will be surrounded by beauty no matter where you are in this 313-acre attraction, and there's always something new to see. There is five miles of nature trails to walk, a wonderfully tropical Visitor Center and Conservatory to visit, and plenty of differently-themed gardens to enjoy. This is a great place to visit on a pretty day, and one of my favorite ways to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Bring a book or a friend, and enjoy all that nature has to offer!

4. If you're interested in the beauty of the skies during the nighttime, be sure to mark your calendar for the once-a-month viewing at the UGA Observatory. No matter whether the night is cloudy or clear, you will be able to gain a very informative experience learning about astronomy and the night sky. The telescope is placed on top of the physics building at the UGA campus. Keep the next viewing date open!

5. Those who have an appreciation for the arts definitely should check out the Georgia Museum of Art. The museum is constantly showing exciting travelling exhibitions; it also boasts around 9,000 pieces in its permanent collection. They offer tours, including those for kids, and often host fun events including film festivals and showings as well as classes and educational programs. The museum recently underwent a huge expansion, so if you haven't visited yet, be sure to check it out!

Pack Up Your White Clothes - Athens GA This Weekend: Sept. 2-4 Events and Things to Do

Why are we not supposed to wear white after Labor Day? A quick search on Google provides many, varying answers, but there is only one answer that matters to me: after this weekend, I'll only be needing my red and black, because football season is coming!

Fortunately, we have a holiday weekend before then, and if you're like me, you are looking forward to a great weekend of fun and relaxation. Where better to spend such a weekend than in Athens, GA? The Classic City has a variety of awesome events going on, and no matter what your interests are, there is something for you!

1. Do you love bluegrass and Americana music? If so, be sure to check out the Del YEAH! Festival on Friday, Sept. 2nd. For $20, you can enjoy an amazing lineup of musicians such as The Welfare Liners, the David Mayfield Parade, Drew Emmitt and Danny Barnes, Cornmeal, and the legendary Del McCoury Band. The event will take place, rain or shine, right outside the Terrapin Brewery starting at 5 p.m., but be sure to get there early to get a good view. This is a great family event, and any children age 10 and under get in free! Bring your folding chairs, but leave the coolers at home - there will be concessions, including your favorite Terrapin beer, for sale.

2. If you're a foodie like me, you will absolutely love visiting the Athens Farmers Market this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Head over to Bishop Park Saturday morning to peruse the freshest Athens-grown produce, sample delicious prepared foods, do some art and craft shopping, and enjoy the live music. They do accept debit and credit cards, so don't worry if you aren't in the habit of carrying around cash. Support your local farmers and artisans, bring your grocery list, and beat the heat of the afternoon!




3. Haven't had the chance to visit the newly-expanded Georgia Museum of Art yet? This weekend is your perfect opportunity since they are holding a temporary exhibition to introduce the public to 3 of their 4 new Study Centers in the Humanities! Enjoy all the paintings, prints, drawings, photos, and letters; some of the archival materials on display are related to Alfred Heber Holbrook, the founder of the GMOA. The museum is open from 12-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.


These are only three events out of many going on in Athens GA this weekend, however! Be sure to check out the following events if you're looking for more experiences to pack into your holiday.

• Music lovers should look into an Evening of Motown and R&B at The Melting Point this Friday. The Splitz will be bringing their fun and funky stage show to Athens; this all ages event should not be missed. Get there before 9 p.m. and bring your dancing shoes!
• Looking to enjoy the great outdoors? Join the free Naturalist's Walk from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday. Go to the Sandy Creek Nature Center and ENSAT Center for a refreshing hike around the property. Don't forget your binoculars and cameras!
• If you're trying to find something different, check out the Classic City Rollergirls Hollerin' Hootenanny on Saturday night. This night of fun and entertainment includes games, music, and dancing for only $3. It starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Little Kings Club and lasts all night. Don't miss out on the Watermelon Seed Spittin' Contest!

The NEW Georgia Museum of Art

One of the most relaxing and enjoyable activities that I love is one that also makes me more cultured and appreciative of my world: strolling around museums. I love that it's laid back, quiet and a year-round experience that is always changing! For years, the Georgia Museum of Art has been top-notch, but the new addition makes a visit to the museum so much more of an event! The Georgia Museum of Art, located on the East Campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., has long offered its audiences a world-class art experience. As both an academic museum and the state’s official art museum, this treasure in Georgia's Historic Heartland serves not only the University of Georgia population, but also the owners of its permanent collection and the citizens of Georgia, through award-winning exhibitions, publications and programming.

A newly designed 16,000-square-foot expansion of the museum’s galleries by Gluckman Mayner Architects (New York) allows for continual display of works from the museum’s permanent collection. Visitors to the Georgia Museum of Art can now come back time after time not only to see temporary special exhibitions, but to visit old favorites from the permanent collection. Teachers can take advantage of the long-term display of important historical works and corresponding educational materials from the Louis T. 1. A week-long celebration of the Georgia Museum of Art's grand reopening begins with a gala event Saturday and a friends' preview day on Sunday with even more to do throughout the week! If you and your partner are looking for something adventurous to do on Valentine's Day, head over to Canopy Studio for a Beginner Partner Trapeze Workshop! Get Creative!

So you are going to be in Athens on Valentine's weekend, but are on a tight budget. Don't panic- you can still find things to do that are free!

Star-gaze through a 24-inch telescope! The UGA Observatory (atop the Physics and Astronomy building) will be open for public viewing this Friday at 8 p.m. for 60 to 90 minutes. If cloudy, there will be a brief talk on astronomy that is of current interest.

Join the Georgia Museum of Art at the Lyndon House Arts Center for an early Valentine's Celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. - noon. Use the works of arts you see in the galleries to inspire your own pop-up Valentines. Heart-shaped treats will be provided.

On Valentine's Day, Lay Park hosts the annual Senior Sweetheart Prom in the park's gymnasium. Activities include dancing, music, refreshments and socializing! The Senior Sweetheart Prom is open to citizens 55-years and older.

Twitter Contest: The Art of Cinema

Attention all movie buffs!

The Georgia Museum of Art is hosting "The Art of: Cinema" at Cine next Tuesday, July 21. The event is part of the GMOA's "Art Of:" series of entertaining and educational events that celebrate craft beyond the traditional fine arts, such as gardening, cinema, beer brewing, and more.

Dr. Richard Neupert from the UGA Department of Theatre and Film Studies will present “How to Watch a Film”; afterward, attendees can choose between three films being shown that evening. Tickets are $15 for friends of the museum and $20 for non-members. The event fee includes a movie ticket, the lecture, and a reception.

Want to go but wish it were free? You are in luck! The great people at GMOA have given the Athens CVB 2 tickets to give away.
