Wild Rumpus Halloween Parade and Spectacle

Looking for an amazingly interactive Halloween activity in one of America’s most exciting college towns? In the style of Burning Man or the Oregon Country Fair, Athens, Ga hosts their own explosion of creative energy: the Wild Rumpus Parade and Spectacle. On October 26, 2013, thousands of creatively-costumed revelers will march their way through Downtown Athens. Last year saw nearly 3,000 people flood the streets of the Classic City and 2013 aims to see even more. The parade is FREE for both spectators and participants, so start planning your costume and head to Athens to enjoy the festivities!

While last year's Wild Rumpus parade was focused on howling at the moon, this year's theme aims even bigger with "RAWR ~ A Tribute to the Sun." With a focus on Leo and the Sun, downtown Athens will be set ablaze on October 26th as the pinnacle Halloween event to let loose this bubbling stew of artistic self-expression, costuming, and gleeful abandon.

One unique aspect of the Wild Rumpus is that it encourages creativity and group spirit. Attendees can opt to walk alone, in pairs, or small groups. Or even better . . . you can choose to form your own themed brigade with friends, or even join an existing brigade. Examples of past brigades include Leather and Lace, Dead and Famous, Zombies, Belly-dancers, even Disney characters. Basically if you can theme it, you can form it! Let your creativity shine through like the Sun! Floats, banners, performances, and music are all welcome. Those wanting to walk in the parade MUST be dressed in costume, so don't forget to dress up in your Halloween best.

This year’s 5th anniversary of the Wild Rumpus brings with it many exciting new features in addition to those participants have come to relish. A new outdoor stage at the end of the parade route will host even more live, local music. There will also be many new daytime activities aimed at including the younger crowd into the festivities. For the first time ever, kids can look forward to a "Monster Mash" party, complete with musical acts, puppeteers, crafts stations, a haunted house, and all sorts of Wild Things.


Top off the evening with a concert at the world-famous, fabulous 40 Watt Club. The after-party extravaganza, for those 18+, will feature local bands Ghost Owl, Space Trucks, and Wild Rumpus master of ceremonies Timi Conley with Kite to the Moon. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the party starts at 9 p.m.


The 5th incarnation of the Wild Rumpus Parade is sure to be unlike any other. With many new activities for children, this year aims to get the entire family involved. Whether you want to dress up on your own, in a brigade, or just come down and watch, the Wild Rumpus is really a special treat for all of Athens.

Fall is finally here ladies and gentlemen, and in Athens, Georgia that means the celebration lasts all season long. If you're looking for some wholesome, fall family fun, then head over to the five-acre Athens Corn Maze which is open Thursday - Sunday through November 2nd. Contrary to its name, the corn maze is more than just that. In addition to the Corn Maze, you and your friends can enjoy a "Hey Hey Heyride," pony rides, and farm animals. There's also the Corn Box filled with freshly shelled corn, which offers a seasonal alternative to a sandbox for children (or adults!) to play in. There's no better way to spend your autumn day than lost in a sea of corn with all your friends. You can come visit Thursday - Friday 5 p.m. - 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. - 10 p.m. Admission to the Corn Maze is $10 per person and free for children under 3 years of age.

Looking for some wholesome fun for the kiddo's this Halloween? Come on out to the famous 40 Watt Club. They'll be hosting a Halloween Kids Dance Party with theatrical kids band Like Totally! on Saturday October 19th. All guests, including parents, are encouraged to dress up as there will be a costume contest during the show. As an added treat, Like Totally! will be debuting their new single and music video "Veggie Wrap." There will be snacks and juice boxes for the kids, as well as a bar for those of age. Those looking for a chance to interact with some creepy-crawlies this Halloween season should look no further than Scary, Oozy, Slimy Day. Sandy Creek Nature Center will be hosting one of their most popular events on October 19th, 4 - 7 p.m., which offers attendees the chance to spend the evening learning about different scary bugs and insects, in addition to participating in a variety of games, activities and crafts. This year there will be delicious food vendors, including Shane's Rib Shack. Admission is $3 for ACC residents, $5 for non-residents, and free for children under the age of 3. Lickskillet Artists Market, a unique indoor/outdoor market featuring eclectic wares by countless artists of all ages, returns to Lyndon House Arts Center on Saturday, October 26th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. In addition to over 50 artist booths, you'll be able to get your hands dirty with many hands-on art activities perfect for families, and then enjoy performances by a variety of local musicians. The event also includes tours of the historic Ware-Lyndon House, live art demonstrations by area artists and some delicious food provided by food vendors.The best part? No talk of Halloween in Athens would be complete without mention of the Wild Rumpus Parade. October 26, 2013 marks the 5th year anniversary of this crazy event where thousands of people dress up and march around downtown Athens, Ga. Before you gorge yourself on pounds of Halloween Candy, get a head start on your exercise with the thirteenth annual Jack O' Lantern Jog and Goblin Fun Run. It will take place October 27th at the Sandy Creek Nature Center. This festive four-mile road race and one-mile fun run raises money in support of the Sandy Creek Nature Center. All runners are encouraged to dress up. The costume contest starts at 1:40 p.m., the Fun Run at 2 p.m., and the Jack O' Lantern Jog begins at 2:30. There will be unique trophies for winners, runners medallions for kids 10 and under, and much more. Prizes will be given out in each age division for the four-miler. This year on Tuesday October 29th, children ages 2 - 12 will get the chance to take a haunted trick-or-treat tour of the Athens' Bear Hollow Zoo when they hold "Boo at the Zoo." Afterwards, make sure to head on over to Memorial Park's Halloween Carnival for fun and prizes! Kids are encouraged to dress up, as there will be a costume contest every hour. The carnival, which will run from 5 - 8 p.m, will also feature stories, games, and activities. Kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Halloween in Athens is particularly special because all old towns have lots of great ghost stories to tell. This year's Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation's  "Haunted History Tour" will be held on Wednesday, October 30th and Thursday, October 31st at 7:30 p.m. The two-hour tour will wind through Downtown Athens and UGA's North Campus and explore the spirits, hauntings, superstitions and mysterious legends of the Classic City. Athens This Father's Day Weekend: June 14 - 16

Another weekend is here in Athens, Ga, and it's a special one!  Father's Day is on Sunday, but the Classic City is offering dad-friendly events all weekend.  Whether your "Old Man" is into wine and beer tasting or theatrical and musical entertainment, there's something for every family to do this weekend!  

If you've never been to Terrapin Beer Co. Free Tastings and Tours, Father's Day weekend is the perfect time to change that!  If you have been, you'll understand why we think Dad would love a couple of hours there with free beer tastings, tours, and live music. Every Wednesday through Saturday, the local Athens brewery invites people of all ages and their leashed pets to tour the brewery and enjoy the early evening in their outdoor field. Each purchase of a $10 or $12 pint glass includes eight tickets (ages 21+), and every ticket is redeemable for a 4 oz. pour of Terrapin's year-round, seasonal, Monster Tour, Side Project, and/or specialty brews. Feel free to bring the kids and dogs on leash, plus a frisbee, ball, or use Terrapin's corn hole games for additional fun! The tours run from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

We're excited about 8th Annual Sprockets Music Video Show at the 40 Watt Club this Saturday!  Music videos from around the world will be shown beginning at 10 p.m. (doors at 9 p.m.) and the audience will vote for the Audience Choice Award winner.  Admission is $5, but if you have an AthFest wristband, you'll save a dollar.  This is an AthFest affiliated event, which serves as a reminder that the festival is nearing!  Flicker Theatre & Bar is hosting a pre-show reception from 7 - 9 p.m., where you will be able to meet the filmmakers and judges and eat Mama's Boy!  Come out and enjoy worldwide talents at this unique Athens event!

Ensure that Dad has an exceptional day on Sunday by signing both of you up for Father's Day Wine Tasting at Hotel Indigo's Rialto Club!  This 3-hour event presented by Hotel Indigo and Shiraz Fine Wine & Gourmet will provide a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy together. Kruger-Rumpf Winery of Germany's Rieslings will be served along with southern snacks, and there will also be live music to be enjoyed by all.  You'll also have the opportunity to meet the winemaker, Georg Rumpf, and learn more about the featured Rieslings.  Call Hotel Indigo directly at 706-546-0430 to reserve your tickets as soon as possible!  The tasting is from 4 - 7 p.m.

Take a trip back to the 1940s at Buffalo's Cafe on Friday night for their Casablanca Night feat. The A-Train Band party!  This family-friendly event will have guests of all ages dancing and having a ball.  All are encouraged to dress up and be prepared to show off their dance moves, as there will be costume and dance contests along with live music and exotic cuisine!  The admission is $20 and includes a buffet.  Take advantage of this neat event!

For the adult crowd, The Great American Trailer Park Musical will be the featured performance all weekend long at the Athens Community Theatre, by the Town and Gown Players!  The musical is written by David Nehls (music and lyrics) and Betsy Kelso (script) and is a Mainstage Production directed by Jonathan Sparks.  The plot is described as a meeting between the shows "South Park" and "Desperate Housewives" - sure to entertain, but not suitable for young ears.  The musical will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night and 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, and admission ranges from $15 - $18 dollars.  If you're looking to add a little spice to your weekend, this show is for you!

Entertainment

What could be more romantic than an evening movie with your sweetheart? This Valentine's Day, the Georgia Museum of Art will screen the classic 1953 film, Roman Holiday. The film follows an American reporter as he escorts a runaway princess through Rome. Before and after the film, couples can decorate valentines and place them by their favorite works of art in the museum's collection. The most popular valentines will be shared via the museum's social media channels. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free. Parking is also free after 5 p.m. 

Couples can let loose and  enjoy live music while experiencing a great meal at Buffalo's Cafe. On Thursday, February 14, David Prince returns to perform couples' favorite love songs. There will be a Prix Fixe menu available featuring 3 courses for $30 per couple, as well as Buffalo's full menu and beverage services. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and admission is $8 per person. On Friday, February 15, couples can enjoy the annual Elvis Valentine's Day Show, starring Chris Shuppe as Elvis. Both Prix Fixe menu and full menus will be available, along with a full bar service in the Big Back Room. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. 

  

Merle Haggard will perform at The Classic Center Theatre on February 14. Known as the godfather of country music, Haggard is sure to put on a fun show for Athens couples. Admission is $52 for pit seats and $45 for all other seats. Show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Couples can dance the night away on February 14 with the revolutionary sounds of Papadosio at the Georgia Theatre. Melding progressive rock with psychedelia, folk with electronica, and dance music with jam, Papadosio has amassed a dedicated following of thousands of individuals. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the band will perform at 10:15 p.m. Tickets are $10. 

For a special day-after-Valentine's-Day event, couples may enjoy the music of Jonathan Richman at the 40 Watt. Featuring Tommy Larkins on the drums, this performance includes guileless honesty and playfully catchy compositions. Doors open at 8 p.m. on February 15, and the show will begin at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.

Athens is definitely making a name for itself on the dining scene. Talented chefs take pride in locally-sourced ingredients to craft amazing plates and they'll be bringing out all the stops for Valentine's.

Heirloom Cafe is offering a variety of romantic dining options the week of Valentine's Day. For an early celebration. couples can attend the Heirloom Tuesday Tasting on February 12 at 6 p.m. The tasting will feature five "Romantic Red" wines for only $15. On Valentine's Day itself, Heirloom will offer an intimate Prix Fixe dinner with a la carte options available at the bar. 

Couples can enjoy a romantic evening dinner at Athens famous Five & Ten. Owned by award-winning author and Top Chef judge Hugh Acheson, the restaurant will feature a variety of delicious dinner options, ranging from poached Maine lobster to dry-aged ribeye. The Valentine's special will cost $75 for food and $35 for wine pairings. 

The National will be serving an elegant three-course Prix Fixe meal on Thursday, February 14. The National is known for its Mediterranean inspired food and wine, while providing a casual neighborhood gathering spot reminiscent of European bars and cafés. A variety of choices will be offered for each course, including a decadent dessert. Tickets will be $50 per person.  

Why pick just one Athens restaurant, when you can taste over 50?  True foodies won't want to miss Taste of Athens, on Sunday, February 17, makes for a wonderful way to round out Valentine's weekend. Over 50 local restaurants will have food samples and wine and beer tastings; the event also features live music and a silent auction. Athens Fashion Invasion

On November 15th, well-known vintage shop Agora on East Clayton St. presents the "Athens Fashion Invasion" at the 40 Watt Club on East Hancock St., with all proceeds benefiting AIDS Athens. 2012 Summer of SPOA: Athens' Skate Park!

Summer is always an exciting time in Athens, Georgia, and 2012 is definitely no exception. Nearly eight years ago, The Skate Park of Athens (SPOA) broke ground and became the first modern skate park in the state of Georgia. This summer, Phase 2 of the SPOA project is in full swing! Locals in the community are aiming to raise $30,000 in order to make street skate additions to the already-existing deep and shallow bowls at the park. The 2012 Summer of SPOA is a series of Athens GA events being held throughout the summer to raise funds, while honoring our local skate culture.


The Summer of SPOA events include many art exhibits throughout Athens, indicative of the sport of skateboarding. A photography show entitled "Concrete Culture" will continue through July 25, at Cine in Athens. Work by Bob Brussack, Jason Thrasher, Chad Osburn, Kent Pierson, and Ian McFarlane will be on display, and photographs will be available for purchase. The Hudgens Center for the Arts will host "Summer of Sk8" through August 25, an exhibition of different skateboard designs. The "Board Room" Exhibit at The Gallery@Hotel Indigo- Athens features skate decks designed by 55 Athens artists. On the last day of  the exhibit, September 9, Hotel Indigo-Athens will hold "The Board Room" skateboard auction from 4-10 p.m. Don't miss out on the opportunity to experience unique Athens art, while supporting the local the community!


Aside from artistic works, the Summer of SPOA event calendar is also packed with rock concerts to aid in the fundraising efforts. Saturday, July 21, Farm 255 will host a benefit concert for SPOA. Performance times, participating bands, and ticket prices are TBA. Check out the restaurant's music calendar for updates and details. The 40 Watt Club will also host a Skate Park of Athens Benefit concert, featuring Dead Confederate, Brothers, Twin Tigers, and SheHeHe, on Friday, August 10. Tickets are $7 in advance, and can be purchased at the venue's website. Go see bands Grass Giraffes and Abandon the Earth Mission at the SPOA Skate Rock Show at the Georgia Theatre on Saturday, August 28. Finalized show times are TBA.

The grand finale of the Summer of SPOA events will be the Skate Rock Festival, held on Saturday, October 6. Kick off this celebration with the SPOA Rock Show Pre-Party the night before on Friday, October 5, at Hotel Indigo-Athens. Saturday's Skate Rock Festival at the Skate Park of Athens will include great live music performed on one of the AthFest outdoor stages, exciting skate and BMX demos, and an open skate session for skaters. Poppin', Ridin', and Walkin' - Athens, GA This Weekend: Oct. 14-16 Events and Things to Do

As we get closer to the weekend, I personally am anticipating many fun things to do in Athens, GA. The skies have cleared and there are really great outdoor offerings coming up that will give you, your friends, and family the perfect opportunity to begin enjoying the cooler autumn weather. So grab your fall coats and start planning your weekend schedule!

1. Have you gotten your tickets to the 7th Annual Athens Popfest yet? This event is a four-day music festival featuring around 70 rock and pop bands both from the U.S.and overseas. All the events are held at either 40 Watt, Caledonia Lounge, or the Classic Center, and all events are open to all-ages! The festival goes from Oct. 11-15 and you can purchase full festival passes or individual tickets to the shows. This is definitely something to check out for all music-lovers! Make sure to check the show lineup on the Popfest website to see what bands are playing, and when and where they will be performing. This is a great way to enjoy a weekend full of music as well as support the arts. The non-profit Athens Popfest Foundation grants scholarships to a number of Athens high school graduates who intend to pursue a degree in visual or performing arts.

2. Habitat for Humanity is holding its 4th Annual Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century and Fall Festival. This bicycle race and Fall Festival will be held at Terrapin Brewery on Saturday starting at 10 am. All cyclists 21 and over will receive a t-shirt, special edition Terrapin pint glass, as well as a Terrapin tour; all younger participants will receive a t-shirt and water bottle. The race will begin and end at Terrapin and will circle around Clarke County. For the non-cyclists, the Fall Festival will have music, food, games, and a lot of fun! If you haven't registered for the race yet, and you want to participate, don't worry -- event day registration is available. Make sure to check out this event and spread awareness of the effort to achieve community home-ownership!

3. Don't miss out on this Sunday's Athens Heritage Walk: Downtown Athens. Hal Cofer and Jones Drury will take you through 40 years of the heart and soul of Athens, and you'll be able to get a little taste of how it was like when Broad Street attracted the farmers coming into town to buy their needed goods and the city folk headed over to Clayton Street to shop at the many clothing and department stores. Downtown Athens has changed quite a bit with urban renewal and the growth of the University, and this is a great way to learn of its interesting history! Make sure to book your tickets in advance. The tour begins at 2:00 p.m.

If these don't match up with your weekend schedule, try looking at some of the following events!

• Bring your family to the Southeast Clarke Park on Friday night to enjoy the Family Movie Under the Stars. The movie will be Rio, starting at 7:00 p.m. but the fun begins at 5 :00 p.m. with games and music. A concessions stand will be available with great movie snacks available for purchase, but other than that, this event is free! So bring your lawn chairs and your blankets and enjoy some fun family time.
• The Timothy Road Elementary Roadrunner Rally 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run is this Saturday! The race begins at 8:00 a.m., and there will be a free pancake breakfast provided for all registered runners. Hurry and register, and start stretching those legs - awards will be given out for different categories!
• Love Shakespeare? Ever wondered what a play incorporating all his works would be like? Then you should not miss out on The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Quinn Hall at Memorial Park. The Circle Ensemble will be compressing all 37 plays by the famous playwright into less than two hours of hilarity that will be full of fun and laughter! Get your tickets now!

Athens This Weekend: July 22-24

It's going to be one of those weekends in Athens, GA. You know, the kind of weekend with enough exciting events taking place around town for you to be able to customize your days specifically to your own interests. I suggest you start creating your itinerary now- so as not to miss the fun happenings going on in Athens, GA this weekend. There is:

1) Art to be discussed; If you haven't yet had the chance to visit the first Resident Studio Exhibition at ATHICA, featuring 30 oil paintings by Maxine Youngblood, then it's time to get out there and check it out  in its final weekend. The exhibit's Closing Reception will take place Sunday, July 24, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will include an artist & curator Panel for open discussion and finally, a reception with the artist. Having not started creating art until the age of 52, Maxine Youngblood, now around 73 years old, nevertheless, creates vivid, rousing works of art. The 30 oil paintings being featured in ATHICA's Resident Studio exhibit are of that same nature, bright, colorful, and passionate, often likened to the style of French and German Expressionism. Curator Lizzie Zucker Saltz and Assistant Curator Ashley Westpheling largely selected works that were figurative in nature- representing pop culture icons like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Donald Trump, as well as other local artists, performers, and models. If you already had the pleasure of visiting this exhibit or will be visiting for the first time this weekend, be sure to remember to come out for the closing reception on Sunday to hear about the works from the artist and curators themselves! 2) Music to be danced to; In its seventh consecutive year, the Annual Darius Goes West Benefit Concert will feature huge acts, such as Bubba Sparxxx and the Nappy Roots who will be accompanied by Georgia Gurlz and Elite Tha Showstoppa- doors open at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the 40 Watt. Tickets will be $10 in advance and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Darius Goes West: The Roll of his Life is an award winning documentary that followed Darius Weems, a teen with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, on a 7,000 mile journey across the U.S. to spread awareness about the fatal DMD disease and raise money for researching a cure. The film was widely praised and raised over one million dollars for research. Since the film, a Darius Goes West Foundation continues to spread awareness and raise money through events such as the one taking place in Athens, GA this weekend. Other Darius Goes West Day affiliated events taking place this weekend are:

• Family Fun Night/ Carnival: The Body Shop of Athens, Friday, July 22, 5:00-9:00 p.m.

3) Local commerce to be supported; The Athens Farmers Market is still in full swing, all local produce and crafts at their freshest and finest, Saturday at Bishop Park from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Your beautiful morning of perusing the displays of the healthy produce and delightful crafts in the sun will be set to a Celtic soundtrack this Saturday morning as Repent at Leisure will play at 8:00 a.m., but the track will flip with the soul folk sounds of local singer/songwriter Kyshona Armstrong at 10:00 a.m. I know it'll be Saturday, but the Athens Farmers Market is worth setting your alarm for this weekend! 4) Theater to be enjoyed; Opening night of The Circle Ensemble Theater performance of Metamorphoses will take place Thursday and run through the Saturday night, July 21-23, beginning each night at 8:30 p.m. in the pool at Ashford Manor. The play transforms ancient myth and lore into contemporary language in a story that takes place completely in and around a large pool of water. This performance is sure to be one of the most interesting theatrical events of the summer! Read more about it on our calendar listing.

Ready, Set, AthFest! June 22 - 26, 2011

The schedule has been released and the good news is being spread- AthFest 2011 is set to stimulate, inspire and entertain us on all fronts of artistic festivity planned for the eagerly anticipated event. For almost a year, we have been patiently awaiting June 22 - 26, 2011 -- the return of Athens, Georgia's favorite music and arts festival, dreaming of the week when our most talented regional musicians and artists will come together again and illuminate the streets with the sights, sounds, and performances of their respective crafts. 

For those who will be experiencing it for the first time, AthFest is a festival to celebrate Athens, Georgia music and arts.  Local and regional musicians, artists, performers, and other creative minds will showcase their work throughout the downtown area of Athens, GA. As music is the force that drives the Classic City, it is also the focus of the festival featuring 3 outdoor stages hosting 3 days of shows from an impressive line-up of headlining acts at no charge to the public. Some very exciting performers headlining this year include: Futurebirds, the pensive alt-country band will stop back home in Athens from their tour promoting the blossoming success of their current album; Guadalcanal Diary, will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of their formation as pioneers of 80's Southern indie-pop; Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, the soulful blues rock group with honest, poignant lyrics will play the sounds of the South.

The second and main stage outdoor performances are just the icing on the AthFest cake, though. The "club crawl" event taking place Friday and Saturday night will feature a diverse line-up of local bands and artists performing at around 12 of the best music venues in town. Think 40 Watt, The Melting Point, Little Kings, Caledonia and more. The venue schedule features some exciting Athens favorites, both the weathered and up-and-coming alike, filling virtually every stage in the downtown area. Some exciting performances to look out for: Hope For A Goldensummer, the recently re-emerging folky sister sirens will bring their haunting Southern voices to Little Kings Shuffle Club; Modern Skirts, the still buzzing alt-rock band return their harmonic success to the The Melting Point; Reptar, the young, fresh electro-pop band of boys will beam their high energy to a sure-to-be-dancing crowd at the 40 Watt; Twin Tigers; the dynamic and melodic sounds of their strong Athens influences will be heard at Go Bar. These among a total of around 200 other amazing bands and artists performing in venues and outdoor stages throughout the 3 days of music make the options endless and the choices impossible.

In addition to an incredible musical agenda, the festival also showcases some very exciting comedy acts, dance performances, and film screenings. Notable events include: Laughfest comedy show, June 22 at the 40 Watt, the 2nd annual comedy showcase featuring nationally touring acts such as Dan Telfer and TJ Young with many other hilarious Athenians; WIRED 2011: Athens Dance Music Festival, June 25 at New Earth Music Hall, a showcase of the most talented regional electronic artists playing fresh variations of dubstep, experimental hip-hop, electro-house, and more; AthFest FilmFest 2011, June 22-26 at Cine, daily screenings of Athens-based rock docs, short films, teen screen, and more; Flagpole Music Awards, June 23 at the Morton Theater, the magazine's annual ceremony recognizes local bands across every genre and category who have displayed impressive musical creativity.

Another large component of the AthFest ensemble of events is the Artists Market which is made up of over 40 booths featuring the original artwork of around 50 local artists. With exhibited work in forms across almost every medium, regional artists and craftspeople compete for cash prizes accompanying the best in show, second place, and 5 merit awards that will be granted to the top works exhibited. The works of art displayed in the Artists Market will be available for viewing and, some, for sale.

At the corner of Washington and Lumpkin, tents will cover the KidsFest area with a multitude of crafts, games, workshops and family-friendly musical performances. A KidsFest parade, art contest, open mic opportunity, and songwriting workshop top a longer list of awesome events and creative opportunities for kids of all ages. Focusing strongly on the bulging schedule of family-friendly activities, AthFest caters to the kids who are, after all, a large part of the motivation behind the entire event. All proceeds from the festival go to AthFest Educates!, a program aiming to integrate educational music and arts programs into local schools. With arts and music education at the center of it's efforts, AthFest, as a component of the non-profit AthFest organization, shares the beauty and necessity of local creativity with the community and beyond.
