Athens This Weekend: October 18 - 20

We've reached the middle of October which means Halloween is fast approaching! This weekend in Athens, Georgia marks the beginning of all the Halloween festivities sure to fill the rest of your month. Kick off the season, and your weekend, just right with one of the many fun activities going on in the Classic City. Whether you want to enjoy the days with family, or party the nights away with friends, Athens has it all to make sure you spend your weekend doing what you love.



Come out to the 40 Watt Club on Saturday, Oct 19th for a good old fashioned Halloween Dance Party with Like Totally! All guests (including parents) are highly encouraged to wear costumes because there will be a costume contest during the show. As an added treat, Like Totally! will be debuting their new single and music video "Veggie Wrap" at the show. The bar will be open for those of age and there will be snacks and juice boxes for the kiddos. Get started on your Halloween celebrations even earlier and dance the day away. This Saturday, you and your family are invited to spend the afternoon at the Sandy Creek Nature Center learning about the slippery, the slimy, and misunderstood creatures. The annual Scary, Oozy, Slimy Day will feature games, crafts, interactive activities, and the opportunity to see and touch live animals such as snakes and hissing cockroaches. Come on out from 4 - 7 p.m., bring the kids all dressed up in their Halloween costume. There will also be local food vendors available, including Shane's Rib Shack. Start the Halloween season off just right by getting up close and personal with all sorts of creepy crawlies.



It’s almost time to harvest the hops again, and in the true fashion of celebrating all things "hoppy," Terrapin Beer Company is hosting their annual Hop Harvest Festival Saturday, October 19th from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m. For entertainment, Terrapin will be breaking out a number of specialty casks and Hop Backs to tempt your taste buds. There will also be a discussion of the difference between home brewing and professional brewing, and even representatives from a few different hop farms there to share the dirty secrets of hop growing. And that's not even mentioning the multiple bluegrass bands, local vendors, food, and more. This Sunday marks the 4th year of the AthFest Half Marathon. On October 20th, thousands of runners will wind their way through the historic downtown Athens. This race is unique not just because it takes place in the Classic City, but there is also live music featured at every mile throughout the race. Whether you're running or not, you can kick off race weekend with the AthHalf Fitness Expo on Saturday October 19th at The Classic Center. There will be bargains on running and fitness merchandise, free samples of nutrition and demonstration of fitness products, and all sorts of health and fitness exhibits related to running, walking, and overall wellness. Even if you opt not to run the 13.1 miles, you can still come out and cheer on all the athletes. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. on Clayton Street. UGA football against Missouri last weekend broke our hearts, but don't give up now! There's still some hope and a couple more home games to look forward to.
