How Do You See the Classic City?

Athens has been named many things over the years, from a top college music scene in Rolling Stone, to a Distinctive Destination in the United States.

But the real question is how do you see Athens, Georgia? What makes this place so special? Sure we have a top university, an incredible music scene and a diverse culture, but what good is a town without its people.

Here is what one Athens resident had to say when I asked her that very question.

So get out, explore and make your own definitions.

Trading Football Cleats for Leotards

If you thought the UGA Athletic season ended with the Capital One Bowl, think again.

Tonight the No. 4 Georgia Gym Dogs will take on No. 9 Alabama at Stegeman at 7:30 p.m.

With nine national championships under their belt, four of which were earned in the last four years, there is no better opportunity to avenge the loss we all experienced between the hedges this past September.

The Gym Dogs are undefeated so far this season, topping the Utah Utes this past Monday afternoon. The Gym Dogs are now tied with Utah for the most national championships titles.

And with Head Coach Suzanne Yoculan retiring from her position as head coach at the end of the season, this year could be filled with more than just memories for the UGA and Athens communities.

Be sure to arrive early and you may see more similarities between tonight and that faithful day in September: the Gym Dogs have their own version of the Dog Walk before every home meet this season with doors opening two hours and 15 minutes before each meet.

Tickets are only $10 for adults and $6 for children and are available here or at the ticket window!

For a full meet schedule click here!

See you there! Go Dawgs!

Athens, Ga.: A Truly Classic City

On Tuesday, January 13 Athens was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

Athens is the first Georgia destination to receive this national designation since 2004, when Macon made the list.

Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davison was presented with an award plaque from Karen Nickless, Southern Office field representative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, at a ceremony held at the Taylor-Grady House, a National Historic Landmark.

More than 80 local and state representatives were present, making the event an overwhelming success.

As Mayor Heidi Davison said, "Where else can you find the location of the first Garden Club of the United States within blocks of the headquarters of one of the most successful rock bands in the world?"

Congratulations to all those who have helped restore our city to its "classic" charm.

Be sure to check out all the photos here and keep a look out on the Athens CVB youtube channel for video from the ceremony at the Taylor-Grady House to come!

Guest Blogger: Colonel Marc on Athens

The excellent Ying Quartet performance [on Jan. 10] at the UGA Performing Arts Center graciously offered to the Athens community made me happily wander back in time.
So many times had I enjoyed chamber music at the Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall in NYC, right after work as a diplomat at the United Nations. After each show, still a one and a half hour drive back home, often in ice and snow; here a mere 10 minutes in below 60! temperature.

It has been two years now, that we loaded our horses from our home on the Greenwich Riding Trails and that we headed south, to Georgia, to Athens.
Though many visits to Athens, Greece, privately and professionally when appointed by NATO, did not prepare me well; ignorant that there existed yet another Athens, classic in name and honoring antiquity and the goddess of wisdom and of the arts and crafts.

Once definitively retired from our functions and no longer coerced by our jobs, a luxury in our eyes, my wife Beth and I selected this undiscovered Classic City, neither by destination, neither by fate, rather by elimination.
It took us more then six months and a list of fifty properties picked from the Internet all over the Southeast, meticulously categorized according to our parameters and requirements. Visiting most of them in person and a rational approach had to lead to the best place under the southern sun for our family and our future endeavors.

And sure it did! Our methodology has not deceived us. This blooming university town and vibrant community have not relinquished in showing us their wonders and beauties petal by petal. Every day still I discover amazing grace and the purest gems in unpretentious and understated display.

We are grateful to find our younger children - 16 and 9 – in the best care of wisdom and development. Our dressage horses and Irish terriers have well adapted on Angel Oaks Farm and we were blessed to establish our Bed&Breakfast, The Colonels, in Athens’ greenbelt just before football ruled town.

Thank you, Athens, for being this generous and giving us more than we expected.
