Athens, GA is more than just a unique city. With so much to experience, it has something to offer to absolutely everyone. The historical beauty and excitement that sweeps throughout the streets, is just one of the many reasons people have fallen in love with the captivating Classic City.

My name is Teri Gardner, and as I am ending my fourth year at the University of Georgia, the whirlwind of internships, graduation, and finding future jobs has begun. However, living in Athens, GA for the past three and a half years has been an experience of a lifetime. With an endless amount of options, I still have so much left to explore in this charming city. When I stumbled across an internship with the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau that focuses on Athens culture, events, and experiences, I knew that I had found the perfect opportunity. By combining my Advertising and Communication Studies major with my passion for everything this city has to offer, I have found my niche!

I am excited to continue my exploration of Athens, GA, and hope to give you a unique insight of my experiences of everything that Athens, GA has to offer including the music scene, unique boutiques, delicious restaurants, and exciting events.

Athens, GA This Weekend: Jan. 27-29 Events and Things to Do

There is so much to do in Athens, GA this weekend.Whether you're looking for a good music scene, a place to take your family, or more cultural events, this weekend will surely not disappoint you! Pull out your calendar, and check out these great events!

1.Get ready to set sail and enjoy the smoothest sounds of the Yacht Rock Revue at The Georgia Theatre, this Friday, at 9 p.m. They will be playing all un-abrasive soft hits of the '70s and '80s. The Yacht Rock Revue has taken their rightful place as the smoothest party band in the universe. So push up the sleeves of your blazer, grab your highball class, and don't forget to groom your mustache. The Yacht Rock Revue is the Greatest Show on Surf.

2. Come out and support your local Gym Dogs this Saturday at 4 p.m. Join the legendary ten-time National Champion Gym Dogs in Stegeman Coliseum for high-energy athletics and first-rate showmanship. This evening's meet will also be Alumni Night.

3. On Sunday, there will be not one, but two Bridal Shows in the Classic City! These events feature exhibitors from all of North Georgia. Brides are able to meet face to face with wedding professionals and find everything you need to create the wedding of your dreams. Experience fashion shows that will allow you to see and touch the latest styles and fashions. In addition to getting lots of great ideas and seeing the latest trends, you will be able to save time and money while also having fun! So for all of the future brides, mark down Sunday in your calendars for a day you will not want to miss with The Georgia Bridal Show and The Athens Wedding Professionals Ultimate Bridal Show going on in Athens, GA!

The Third Annual Athens Got Talent will be Saturday, January 28. Come see and hear some of the most remarkable music talent in Northern, Georgia.Tickets are $10 at the door, and the show will start at 7 p.m.
Avid Bookshop is hosting two very special authors this weekend that you can meet! Poet Evie Shockley who is the author of four collections of poetry, will be there on Saturday. Athens freelance writer, editor, and stylist Amy Flurry will be there on Sunday.

A Romantic Valentine's Evening at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia

First in a series of Valentine's Day ideas in Athens, Georgia!

To me, the conservatory at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is the most romantic spot in town. In his most romantic gesture -- perhaps ever -- my now-husband drove to the Garden on our first Valentine's date. Valentine's was on a Saturday that year, and vendors were in the midst of setting up for a wedding reception. We'd been dating less than six months, so marriage hadn't crossed our minds. From the first moment we ducked into the conservatory, this uber-practical girl who'd never daydreamed about weddings was convinced. This was going to be my reception spot. Three and a half years later, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia was the center of my Athens wedding!

Long story short, I can think of no better place to spend Valentine's Day. Better yet, no one will have to be a wedding crasher to be in the Garden's conservatory this year!

Check out what the Garden has planned for Valentine's 2012:

Andrew Pearson of Dondero's Kitchen, has created a special menu for this distinctive atmosphere.

A buffet menu includes appetizers and a salad, plus sautéed shrimp, pork tenderloin medallions, stuffed chicken breast, side dishes and an assortment of rich desserts. In addition to dinner, couples will be serenaded by live music and can stroll through the gardens, a charming quilt exhibit in the visitor center, and the garden gift shop.

Guests are invited to bring their own wine to enjoy with dinner. Seating will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Call 706-542-6359 or 706-389-7955 to make reservations or for more information.

For $70 per couple or $40 per person (add $10 per person if reservations are made after February 10th) guests can enjoy broad selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

A Scavenger Hunt from the Runway

Today's blog entry comes from guest contributor Macy Sirmans, who is preparing for a fun and potentially rewarding scavenger hunt on the UGA campus in Athens, Georgia on Tuesday, January 24th. Though taking place on campus, this event is not only for students. If a non-student finds a gift before a student does, more power to 'em!

Last September, Vince Camuto at UGA made a name for itself on UGA's campus by engaging the student body in an extremely fashionable game of hide-and-go-seek by combining coveted designer merchandise with clues via social media.

Beginning on January 24th, the Vince Camuto at UGA team is excited to announce that the Campus Hunt is returning to Athens, GA! Prepare to scout and scrimmage for 30 delightful gifts that will be placed throughout academic buildings, lecture halls and on-campus parks. Hints and photos detailing gifts and their whereabouts will be posted on the Vince Camuto at UGA Facebook page immediately after they are hidden.If luck allows, you may just happen upon a bottle of perfume, pair of shoes or to-die-for leather handbag right outside of class.

Vince Camuto events scheduled for the rest of the Spring 2012 semester include opportunities to score job interview worthy attire, bridge the gap between fashion and dance, attend a runway show and, as always, snag numerous glamorous giveaways.

Athens, GA This Weekend:Jan. 20-22 Exciting Events and Things to Do

Don't let the winter weather get you down! It's another great weekend in Athens, GA, so get out and enjoy all of the activities that the Classic City has to offer. Check out the following exciting events for you and your family and friends to enjoy!

1. If you've been craving a taste of Athens' famed music scene, head to The Melting Point, which is featuring A Family Affair with Randall Bramblett Band. You surely will not want to miss this. Athens, GA legend, Randall Bramblett will be joined by special guests Kick the Robot with Dylan Hansen, Isaac Bramblett, John Keane, and Paige and Rachel Keane.There will be reserved seating available on the mezzanine level on a first come first serve basis. These are very limited, so purchase these quickly for a night you'll never forget. There will be other table seating available as general admission on a first-come, first-serve basis. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for food and drinks, and the show will start at 8:00 p.m.

2. If having a quality family day is something you want on your agenda, then Saturday is your answer. The Georgia Museum of Art is hosting a Family Day celebrating art and movement in conjunction with Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative. The event will feature a yoga instructor teaching animal poses, animal-themed artwork, and locally grown food. GMOA has signed on to be a Let's Move! museum to help demonstrate the role museums and gardens lay in growing healthy communities. This event is free and open to the public. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

3. For the art enthusiast, ATHICA will be hosting an event that will truly spark your attention. Starting Saturday, January 21st, ATHICA will be presenting the collection Southern. "Southern" features many never-before-seen works curated by Judith McWillie with the assistance of Lauren Williamson. "Southern" explores the emotional depth and aesthetic diversity of nine artists, spanning four generations, who are interrelated in their "radical contemporaneity." Through photography, video, and sculpture, they present an aesthetically rich installation that questions boundaries between art and religion, aesthetic and documentary practice, and folk and fine art. The Opening Reception will be this Saturday from 7-9 p.m. There will be refreshments by White Tiger. There will be no admission charge for this amazing event, but donations are graciously accepted. So, come out and support the incredible talent of these artists!

The Hotel Indigo will be hosting some special events that you will want to check out. On Friday night, the Rialto Room at Hotel Indigo will be presenting rising stars Shelby McLeod & Eric Dodd! This event will start at 8:00 p.m. Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Don't let the winter keep you from enjoying nature! On Saturday the State Botanical Garden of Georgia will be hosting a Winter Tree Identification event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of identifying deciduous trees in their dormant condition through a variety of activities, including a stroll to the deciduous woods at the Garden.

“Deck the Hollow” Holiday Light Show at Athens' Bear Hollow Zoo

Don't miss this great new holiday event for families! Deck the Hollow Holiday Lights takes place nightly from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Bear Hollow Zoo from Saturday, December 10 through Sunday, December 18. The community is invited to celebrate the holidays in lights. Activities include live music, story telling, animal encounters, concessions available for purchase, and photo opportunities in the zoo illuminated with holiday lights.

Admission fee is $3 per person, ages 2 and under free. Registration is not required.

Holiday Exporation in Athens' Artsy and Eclectic Shops

There is truly not a thing that compares to strolling down the streets of downtown Athens with nothing but sunshine and time. In it's winter decor, downtown's beautiful, historic buildings twinkle with holiday lights, welcoming the season and all of it's splendor. Athens' trendy but classic holiday vibe offers holiday shoppers and winter outings a vibrant mix of local art eclectic shops.

My personal favorite part of holiday shopping downtown is the unpredictable and amusing local shops that end up catching my eye. The variety of unique stores in the area offers shoppers and gift givers everything from fashion to food and art. As a professional window shopper, I've done my fair share of downtown shopping and have discovered some of the best original shops, for the perfect gift and interesting pieces. Among the many wonderful boutiques downtown, I've narrowed the options down to my two favorites: Helix and The Junkman's Daughter's Brother.

I originally stumbled on Helix four years ago during my first visit to Athens, and it still never ceases to spark my creativity. Upon entering the store, visitors are immersed into an atmosphere of imagination and fun. Offering customers everything from well-designed and artistic stationary to innovative local art pieces, such as recycled record coasters or bottle cap picture frames, its no wonder I can spend so much time in this one shop. But don't worry. Helix isn't just for the creative at heart. The cleaver saying and gag gifts found scattered throughout the store adds a uniquely hilarious Athens personality to the shop as well. With arts and crafts, creative pieces, goofy knick nacks, stunning originals, and interesting creations, Helix is the perfect place to find a gift for a friend or a treasure of your own.

Junkman's Daughter's Brother, on the other hand, is an entirely different experience. Related to the Junkman's Daughter in Atlanta, the store was actually founded by the brother of the daughter of a real-life junk man. A little crazy? So is the store. Filled with both the weird and the wonderful, the incredible clutter of the store overwhelms shoppers with the childish and exciting feeling of a scavenger hunt. Life-size posters and flags fill the walls and manikins wearing masks, vintage pieces, and anything flamboyant greet customers throughout the store. If you're looking for entertainment or shopping for a completely unique gift, this is the place to go. The bizarre but amazing accumulation of everything from unusual gifts and retro knick nacks to collectibles and toys, this store has everything and anything you could ever imagine.

Even though I've roamed in and out of all sorts of stores in downtown Athens, I'm sure there are stores that I've overlooked. What are some of your favorites downtown shops for holiday gifts? A Weekend of Holiday Cheer! Dec. 9 - 11 Athens Special Events

If you are like me, you have been looking forward to the holiday season all year. Something about the crispness of the cool air as winter approaches and the unpacking of warm winter clothes immediately brings to mind the images of twinkling holiday lights, the steam curling up from a mug filled with hot cocoa, family sitting around the dinner table staggering under the weight of a holiday feast, fireplaces, familiar holiday tunes, and lots and lots of gift-giving. There is also the fact that with the holiday season comes a variety of exciting holiday events, such as concerts, plays, parades, family activities, and much more!

Luckily for us, Athens GA is no exception, and as we get closer to the end of the year, there are plenty of events and things to do to help get us even more in the holiday spirit. If that is something you are interested in, I would advise you to mark off the weekend of Dec. 9 - 11 in your calendar because that weekend will be completely full of great holiday activities perfect for you and your family and friends!

1. Head over to Clarke Central High School on Friday, Dec. 9 for the 4th annual Not So Silent Night, where you can participate in a silent auction of items from some of Athens' finest establishments. There will be great food provided as well as lively music from Panablaze, Atlanta's renowned steel drum band. Enjoy this night of unique holiday shopping, food, and music, and support award-winning journalism staff of The Odyssey Newsmagazine and the Illiad Literary Journal. Admission is $20 and the event lasts from 7 - 9 p.m.

2. Friday is also the opening night for Overnight Christmas at the historic Morton Theatre. Cornerstone Productions proudly presents this unforgettable musical journey, where Frank Green, the main character, travels the world on the last delivery run before Christmas. This grand musical will fill your evening with delight, Broadway-style production numbers, and fun for the whole family. Overnight Christmas will show at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission can be purchased in advance for $10 for adults and $8 for students, seniors, and children 10 and under. Tickets purchased at the door are $15/$12.

3. On Saturday, Dec. 10, stop by the Sandy Creek Nature Center for Breakfast with Santa. Bring your children and chat with Jolly Old St. Nick himself! There will be crafts and activities for your family to enjoy. The breakfast runs from 10:15 - 10:45 a.m. and admission is $5 for Athens Clarke County residents and $7 for non-residents.

4. Make sure you have reserved a spot for the 4th annual Holiday Spirits Museum Mile Tour held on Saturday night. This festive tour will provide you a chance to step back intohistory and experience antebellum Athens as you experience theatrical vignettes in four house museums that show you holiday traditions back in the day. Seasonal refreshments and period music will also be provided, completing your experience of historical fun. 2-hour tours will depart at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. There are a limited number of seats, so get your tickets today!

5. Those lucky enough to have scored a ticket to the Athens Symphony Community Christmas Concerts on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. will enjoy a wonderful night of holiday music. Held at the Classic Center, the concert will feature many well-known Christmas pieces, such as Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, Carol of the Bells, and The Christmas Song.

6. Bring your children with you to the 3rd Annual Holiday Tea, held at the historic Harris Room on Sunday, Dec. 11. Enjoy time spent and pictures taken with Santa, and eat your fill of of sweets, sandwiches, gourmet cookies, and hot chocolate. The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. Admission is $15 for children and $20 for adults and helps support the programs of the Athens Community Council on Aging.

7. When you have a free moment on Sunday, make sure to drop by the Athens Artist Market First Annual Holiday Showcase. Over 40 local artists will be selling their work at the Athens Art Gallery at Hotel Indigo, allowing you to choose from a variety of quality selections of jewelry, pottery, home decor, skin products, mixed media, and more! Support local while getting a few things crossed off your gift shopping list. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Get in the Spirit!: Holiday Spirits Museum Mile Tour

If you are looking for an unique holiday experience close to home and perfect for the family, look no further. The Athens Historic House Museum Association presents its 4th annual Holiday Spirits Museum Mile Tour on Saturday Dec. 10. However, this is no ordinary holiday home tour. What makes this tour so special and fun for the family? Read on, and find out!

There's a special twist in this holiday home tour: in three of the four houses participants will visit, local and other talent will put on short theatrical performances that give glimpses into how different people celebrated the holidays in the 19th century. The different characters being portrayed include former UGA president Moses Waddel, Henry W. Grady, and an enslaved family. The audience will truly be able to take a step back into time and learn what it was like to celebrate the holidays in the 1800's.

The three performances will take place in the T.R.R. Cobb House, the Taylor-Grady House, and the Church-Waddel-Brumby House. It will also include a guided tour of the Ware-Lyndon House, in which participants will enjoy period music and delicious seasonal refreshments.

Only three tours are being offered, so make sure to order your tickets in advance! The Holiday Museum Mile Tours will depart from the Ware-Lyndon House Parking Lot at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children under the age of 12. The holiday season is underway in Athens! With all of downtown decorated in twinkling winter lights, it's no wonder the whole city is in the holiday spirit. From festive performances and winter workshops to holiday art markets and seasonal drinks, Athens is the perfect place for holiday fun. Start the season off right at one of the many holiday events this weekend in Athens!

1. If you're looking for a wonderful evening of great music, Broadway-style numbers, and fun for the entire family, Athens has two exciting shows that you and your family are sure to love! Beginning this weekend, the historic Morton Theatre will play host to the Chirstmas late-night delivery adventure Overnight Chirstmas. This exciting musical journey illustrates holiday traditions all over the world as an overnight delivery man finds the true meaning of Chirstmas. Broadway lovers can also revisit the classic rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Time Rice at Town and Gown's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar.

2. Looking for the perfect present? Visit the many Athens holiday markets and treat your friends and family to the gift of local art! Original pieces are on show at the Deck the Walls Holiday Market at the Lyndon House Arts Center. The Indie Craftstravaganza Holiday Market will also be offering exciting crafts to holiday shoppers. You also wont want to miss out on the Junior League of Athens Holiday Marketplace at the Georgia Center! With so many market opportunities this weekend, you're sure to find a wonderful gift.

3. Trappeze Pub will be rolling out some of the most incredible stouts in the world for its Third Annual Stout Festival! The venue's taps will be transformed into a celebration of dark and delicious ales that make winter such a special time of the year. They will also have special cask tappings as well as many favorite large bottle stouts poured by the glass each night. Mark you calendars and plan on joining in on the winter fun as Trappeze Pub raises a pint to these delicious giants!

Downtown Athens Christmas Parade of Lights is Thursday, Dec. 1

So much of my Christmas spirit comes from seeing strings and strings of sparkling Christmas lights go up on houses, buildings, and all around Athens as the holidays draw near. Something about the colors and the twinkling of those decorative lights at nighttime really puts me in a happy, festive mood. I especially love the lighted reindeer, candy canes, and other holiday decorations that can be found in many yards.

If you understand this feeling, then you must make it out to the Athens Downtown Christmas Parade of Lights this year! Located in downtown Athens, this annual parade truly ushers in the holiday season with over 60 floats, bands, and other groups bringing the festivity through the downtown streets. The twinkling lights brightening up the downtown area at night will fill you, your friends, and your family with awe and wonder. The parade begins at 7 p.m. on the corner of Dougherty and Pulaski Streets and will end in front of City Hall. Be sure to stay for the whole time so you don't miss out on the traditional tree lighting ceremony hosted by the Christmas celebrities themselves: Santa and Mrs. Claus!

This is the perfect event to share with your family, and children and adults will be consumed by the magic and beauty of the lights. Another great reason to go and make a night of it is the Downtown Open House; if you head downtown prior to the parade, there will be awesome deals and extended hours offered by retailers!

With no admission charge and a night full of fun, this parade makes the list for one of the best holiday events out of the many that Athens has to offer. Mark it on your calendars, and prepare to be amazed and entertained!

1. This Friday, you wont want to miss the local music scene as Deja Vu perfo rms at the Melting Point. The band is a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute group formed by veteran record producer John Keane in the Spring of 2010 and has been a hit in the Athens community. The super group is a talented mix of Athens musicians who perform set lists of crowd favorites such as Teach Your Children, Carry On, Southern Man, Love the One You're With, and many more. Walking distance from campus after the homecoming game, you won't want to miss the delicious food, fun atmosphere, and live music at the Melting Point! Doors open at 6 p.m.

Athens' Greenery is Truely One of Kind

Standing proudly in his distinguished splendor, Jackson Oak peers down at passersby in the historic and gorgeously green neighborhood of Athens, GA. Have the rain and chill earlier this week been getting you down? Don't worry, the weekend is nearly here! And there are some really exciting events planned that will bring guaranteed fun to your day no matter what the weather may bring!

1. From Friday through Sunday, the Canopy Studio Company will be presenting their Fall Aerial Show "What Flies Beneath". This family-friendly show will feature zip lines, bungees, flying cubes, circus poles, straps, tight-wire, Spanish web, and more! The show will be at Canopy Studio at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Matinees will be 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. 2. Are you a fan of jazz or bluegrass? 3. Calling all runners -- have you registered to participate in the 2nd Annual AthFest Half Marathon yet? While you run for this great cause on Sunday morning at 7 a.m., you can enjoy the beautiful scenery Athens has to offer; the run goes through several historic areas, by Sanford Stadium, and along the Oconee River Greenway. A Beer-y Good Time: Terrapin Brewery Tour and Tasting

Honestly, I have never been able to truly appreciate a cold glass of beer. I find this unfortunate, since Athens has a variety of great breweries, bars, and pubs - all of which serve quality beer - and I feel like I have been missing out on a refreshing way to kick back and relax on a beautiful day.

I've resisted many of my friends' efforts to take me to breweries, mainly because I simply could not believe my taste

buds would ever be able to handle what I thought was a bitter beverage. So I was a bit hesitant about agreeing to my friend's proposal that we go to the Terrapin Brewery Tour and Tasting -- ultimately, I said yes because she was visiting from Atlanta and the price of the tour was only $10. Also, I've heard from friends, as well as through the Athens, GA website, that Terrapin beer is really good and the tour and tasting was a must-do while in Athens.

I'm so glad that I decided to go. Not only have I found a couple of beers that I actually like, but I was able to see what all the hype is about.

You begin by paying your entrance fee for the tour and receiving a stamp on your hand if you are

of drinking age. I wasn't aware of this earlier, but the $10 you pay includes a choice of glass cup that you can take home afterwards; pay an extra $2 and you receive a nice jar instead of cup. They also give you a handful of tickets to be used towards the tasting of the numerous beers they have on tap that day. In the same room, they have a lot of Terrapin paraphernalia and souvenirs, perfect as gifts for any beer-loving friends; you can opt to spend some time in there shopping around or you can go straight into the brewery.

Once you step inside the brewery, the smell of beer, both being made and being served, hits you. Now, if you aren't familiar with this smell, I don't want you to think that it is something gross or unwelcome; in fact, I was surprised at how pleasant I found it to be. Your senses are quickly overtaken; you hear the beats of the live music outside and see the groups of people coming in from outdoors to quickly get another taste of the beverage that is the center of attention here. And then, suddenly, your taste buds are telling you (yes, even me, who doesn't even like beer) to go up to that bar and start using your tasting tickets.

4 Tickets will get you a full glass, while 1 ticket will get you a small taste. My friend got 1 ticket worth of the peach beer, while I decided upon the pumpkin beer. Both flavors were absolutely delicious, and the perfect accompaniment to a fun and informative tour. The tour guide, like the rest of the guides and bartenders, are there purely for a love of beer. She enthusiastically shows us the inner workings of the brewery and lets us in on some fun facts -- if you thought the Terrapin Brewery was named after a turtle, you're wrong!

When the tour is over, you are free to get more beer (I went to get a full glass of the peach beer. It's my favorite!) and roam outside to enjoy the music and atmosphere. People bring their dogs and children to this exciting and social environment. The music is good, and the people are lively. My friend and I stayed for about an hour, pleased to have found such a great way to spend our Saturday late afternoon.

So, if you feel like you just can't enjoy beer, I would encourage you to head over to Terrapin and try it out. If you do enjoy beer and have already been, go again! It's a great price for a great time and great beer.

Athens as Seen Through a 19th Century Lens

Sometimes its amazing how different things appear from a new perspective. This past week, as the Welcome Center's Classic City Tour took me up and down streets of Athens, GA that I travel so routinely, I was transported back in time, discovering the history and stories that lay in the foundation of the buildings I normally nonchalantly pass by. For locals and visitors to locations throughout the city to narrate the tale of tenants who lived in the regal and alike, the Classic City Tour offers insight into Athens' 19th century roots, taking guests to stately homes scattered throughout the city.

The first stop on the tour, the Church-Waddel-Brumby House, is where the Welcome Center is located. Before hopping onto the tour bus, my group was led through this historic early 1800's home. Furnished with fixtures from the time period and accurately modeled after the era, the home was the first step in my time travel back to the 19th century. The antique home, once located down the street and moved to avoid demolition, was home to notable Athens families, such as early past presidents of the developing University of Georgia.

Once on the tour bus, our knowledgeable guide took us to the long-standing Lyndon House. The well-preserved late Greek revival home with Italian influence remains standing in its classic splendor and is now home to a house museum and acts as the centerpiece of the Lydon House Arts Center. Recognized as a part of the National Register of Historic Places, this home 1856 has an amazing exterior that is perfectly tucked away on the edge of downtown Athens.

As we made our way through downtown, we passed fascinating sites, such as the double-barreled cannon, which is always pointed north, just in case, and the historically African American side of town. Our tour guide was full of interesting facts and Athens trivia, and we learning interesting facts about the area. For example, the first floor offices of the Morton Theater once played host to the first African American dental practice in the state of Georgia.

The tour bus then slowly took the group through the historic neighborhoods of Athens. Taking frequent stops for photographs and explanation of the structures' architecture and significance, I even became distracted and turned around as I discovered new areas of town. Streets lined with homes full of time-enhanced beauty and individual personality reaffirmed and expanded my love for the historic charm of Athens.

Seasoned Athens residents and tourists alike will leave this historic Athens experience with a heightened appreciation for the city's stories and background as seen through a 19th century lens. As we get closer to the weekend, I personally am anticipating many fun things to do in Athens, GA. The skies have cleared and there are really great outdoor offerings coming up that will give you, your friends, and family the perfect opportunity to begin enjoying the cooler autumn weather. So grab your fall coats and start planning your weekend schedule!

1. Have you gotten your tickets to the 7th Annual Athens Popfest yet? This event is a four-day music festival featuring around 70 rock and pop bands both from the U.S.and overseas. All the events are held at either 40 Watt, Caledonia Lounge, or the Classic Center, and all events are open to all-ages! The festival goes from Oct. 11-15 and you can purchase full festival passes or individual tickets to the shows. This is definitely something to check out for all music-lovers! Make sure to check the show lineup on the Popfest website to see what bands are playing, and when and where they will be performing. This is a great way to enjoy a weekend full of music as well as support the arts. The non-profit Athens Popfest Foundation grants scholarships to a number of Athens high school graduates who intend to pursue a degree in visual or performing arts.

2. Habitat for Humanity is holding its 4th Annual Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century and Fall Festival. This bicycle race and Fall Festival will be held at Terrapin Brewery on Saturday starting at 10 am. All cyclists 21 and over will receive a t-shirt, special edition Terrapin pint glass, as well as a Terrapin tour; all younger participants will receive a t-shirt and water bottle. The race will begin and end at Terrapin and will circle around Clarke County. For the non-cyclists, the Fall Festival will have music, food, games, and a lot of fun! If you haven't registered for the race yet, and you want to participate, don't worry -- event day registration is available. Make sure to check out this event and spread awareness of the effort to achieve community home-ownership!

3. Don't miss out on this Sunday's Athens Heritage Walk: Downtown Athens. Hal Cofer and Jones Drury will take you through 40 years of the heart and soul of Athens, and you'll be able to get a little taste of how it was like when Broad Street attracted the farmers coming into town to buy their needed goods and the city folk headed over to Clayton Street to shop at the many clothing and department stores. Downtown Athens has changed quite a bit with urban renewal and the growth of the University, and this is a great way to learn of its interesting history! Make sure to book your tickets in advance. The tour begins at 2:00 p.m.

Bring your family to the Southeast Clarke Park on Friday night to enjoy the Family Movie Under the Stars. The movie will be Rio, starting at 7:00 p.m. but the fun begins at 5 :00 p.m. with games and music. A concessions stand will be available with great movie snacks available for purchase, but other than that, this event is free! So bring your lawn chairs and your blankets and enjoy some fun family time.
The Timothy Road Elementary Roadrunner Rally 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run is this Saturday! The race begins at 8:00 a.m., and there will be a free pancake breakfast provided for all registered runners. Hurry and register, and start stretching those legs - awards will be given out for different categories!
Love Shakespeare? Ever wondered what a play incorporating all his works would be like? Then you should not miss out on The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Quinn Hall at Memorial Park. The Circle Ensemble will be compressing all 37 plays by the famous playwright into less than two hours of hilarity that will be full of fun and laughter! Get your tickets now!

Adventures and Fun in 5 Points

As a local resident of the Five Points area in Athens, I get to enjoy the picturesque charm of the neighborhood on a daily basis. Families walking hand-in-hand enjoying a beautiful day is an everyday siting, and there are always visitors of unique shops and restaurants laughing and enjoying the company of friends. After living the in Five Points for over a year, I finally decided it was about time I experienced all of the adventures of my area.

My exploration began with a productive study session at Two Story Coffeehouse. The sense-awakening aroma of coffee welcomed me as I opened the door, and I immediately realized why the coffeehouse was such a hot spot. Tucked away in the trees off of Lumpkin St., the

comfortable atmosphere and friendly staff provided me with an inviting local twist in comparison to the normally intimidating national coffee chains. The Athens feel of the establishment was relaxing, and I could feel the sense of community and local loyalty to the store. With a first floor and porch that are perfect for conversation and a peaceful second floor for a quieter environment, Two Story is the ideal place for both chit-chatters and book-readers.

Next stop? Yoforia of course. While this delicious frozen yogurt bar may be a national chain, the Five Points location has definitely become a newly recognized Athens landmark. Because of the immense popularity of the store, I even provide directions to my house based on the shop's location. No matter the time of day or day of the week, the corner of Lumpkin and Milledge is buzzing with friends and family enjoying their large cups of Yoforia treats. With its seasonal flavors, self-served portions, and endless choices of toppings, this dessert corner has provided five points with a delicious sweet tooth.

After brainstorming for a new place to grab dinner and catch some football on Saturday, my friends and I decided to visit the Royal Peasant. The uniqueness of the restaurant and bar had attracted our curiosity many times in the past, and the quaint version of a English pub surpassed our expectations. Everything from the decor to the food and drink menus provided an authentic English experience. The walls were full of English sports paraphernalia, highlighting team achievements, team photos, and spirited scarfs. Once glance at the menu, and guests know this is not a typical American establishment. With extensive beer selection, featuring both regional options and European choices, the drinking atmosphere is well-suited for the beer connoisseur and sports fanatic alike. The food also offered distinct European entrees, such as their fish as chips or bangers and mash. But the more American offerings are delicious as well. I personally enjoyed a cheese burger and left pleased and very full. All in all, the Royal Peasant is a delightful and one-of-a-kind neighborhood pub that is full of culture, beer, and scrumptious food.

Last on my list for the weekend - Sunday brunch at the fairly new Local Jam. Located in the former Five Points Deli storefront, The Local Jam offers a new breakfast and deli experience for the area. The restaurant opened this past summer, and everyone is beginning to take notice of the deli's Athens' vibe and delectably simple fare. Proudly supporting its community, The Local Jam serves its neighbors' products, such as Jittery Joe's Coffee and Alfred's Bread using Terrapin spent grain. The family-friendly feel of the restaurant provides a strong sense of community as well. Tables topped with paper for coloring and decorated with mini pumpkins for the season gives guests a light-hearted dinning environment. I know I personally found my inner child when I noticed a cup of crayons on my table and began doodling all over the brown paper table cloth. But, once my meal was served, I was too distracted by my amazing macaroni experience to even remember I hadn't finished my flower drawing. As what one would normally consider a seemingly effortless dish, the

combination of twisted noodles and cheesy taste elevated the my well-crafted side into a full-blown macaroni experience. My dinning crew and I agreed- it was some of the best macaroni and cheeses we had ever tasted. The entire meal was simple and scrumptious, and I cannot wait to return to try out their more expansive breakfast and lunch menus.

The Five Points area has so much more to offer than just these locations. My Five Points experience will not be complete until I try the renowned culinary excellence at 5 & 10 and stop by some of the antique and clothing stores as well. What do you recommend trying around Five Points?

Fun Free Finds in Athens for the Empty Wallet

There are times when I want to leave my apartment and experience the fun and character of Athens, GA...and then I remember I have very little funds to do so (this usually occurs after having to purchase textbooks -- fellow college students, I know you understand this feeling!). Usually, when this situation arises, I find myself sitting on the couch, flipping through TV channels, and longingly looking out the window at the clear blue sky.

However, this behavior stops now! I've finally discovered a number of things to do that take very little toll on the wallet, all of which do not skimp on the fun despite the fact they do not require too large a chunk of your change. These super free and cheap deals are great for everyone and are a must-do for all Athens GA residents and visitors. Ready to save money and still have a good time? Turn off that TV and read on!

1. The Memorial Park and Bear Hollow Wildlife

Trail is a unique facility in Athens. There are around 120 species of Georgia wildlife in the zoo - including bears, otters, bobcats, and more!) - and a mile-long nature trail also located on the grounds. This is a great place for kids to go, and the area even has an exhibition hall in which younger guests can enjoy different kid-friendly exhibits as well as interact with some of the animals. The facility hosts many special events and programs, and you can even book your next birthday party with them if you're feeling like doing something a little different for your birthday celebration!

2. Love food and music? Don't miss out on the Athens' Farmers Market that takes place twice a week in two different locations. On Saturday morning, it is located at Bishop Park, and on Tuesday night, you can find the market at Little Kings Club. This is a fun way to get your grocery shopping done, check out some local Athens vendors, or even just enjoy some local musical talent. No matter what you go for, you will be guaranteed to have a good time - and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that only fresh Athens produce is up for sale! This is definitely one of the best ways to support your community every week.

3. Looking to enjoy the outdoors? Be sure to make some time for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, one of Athens' most visited attractions. You will be surrounded by beauty no matter where you are in this 313-acre attraction, and there's always something new to see. There is five miles of nature trails to walk, a wonderfully tropical Visitor Center and Conservatory to visit, and plenty of differently-themed gardens to enjoy. This is a great place to visit on a pretty day, and one of my favorite ways to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Bring a book or a friend, and enjoy all that nature has to offer!

4. If you're interested in the beauty of the skies during the nighttime, be sure to mark your calendar for the once-a-month viewing at the UGA Observatory. No matter whether the night is cloudy or clear, you will be able to gain a very informative experience learning about astronomy and the night sky. The telescope is placed on top of the physics building at the UGA campus. Keep the next viewing date open!

5. Those who have an appreciation for the arts definitely should check out the Georgia Museum of Art. The museum is constantly showing exciting travelling exhibitions; it also boasts around 9,000 pieces in its permanent collection. They offer tours, including those for kids, and often host fun events including film festivals and showings as well as classes and educational programs. The museum recently underwent a huge expansion, so if you haven't visited yet, be sure to check it out!

Hopefully, a lot of you have a good amount of free time this weekend, because there are some really fun, big events going on! If you've been wondering about what you should do to enjoy a really great weekend in Athens, GA, then you've definitely come to the right place. Grab your agenda and start marking dates!

1. New Belgium Brewing, the maker of Fat Tire Golden Ale, is bringing its travelling Clips of Faith Beer and Film Tour to Athens, GA this Friday. The

outdoor festival will feature independent comedic shorts, adventure documentaries, and music animation. It will also feature tastings from New Belgium's Brewing's Lips of Faith series and their regular offerings as well as food from local Athens vendors. The best part about it? There is no admission cost! However, plan to bring some cash anyway because all proceeds from food and drink sales will go to Bike Athens. The event will start at 7:00 p.m. on the corner of N. Hull Street and W. Washington Street, so make sure to get out there and have a great evening of watching movies and drinking beer while supporting a local non-profit organization.

2. Beer-lovers will be happy all weekend, because the beer festivities continue through Saturday and Sunday with the Athens Craft Beer Festival. Hosted by Trappeze Pub and Hotel Indigo, this festival was established in order to support local, independent brewers as well as celebrate the distinctly unique beer culture in Athens, GA. The event, located at Hotel Indigo, will feature over one hundred craft beers, live music, delicious food, numerous giveaways, cask releases, demonstrations, and more! General admission is $45 and VIP admission is $65 -- with the VIP ticket, you get access to special beers, a reception, as well as certain amenities and facilities within the hotel. 3. If you're looking for a refreshing form of exercise, make sure to check out the 30th Annual Athens-to-Atlanta Road Skate this Sunday. This famous tradition allows participants to choose between a 38, 52, or 87 mile skate (the 87 mile choice will take you all the way to Atlanta!). Those skating the 38 and 87 will start off at The Classic Center in Athens and skate through the beauty of the Northern Georgia countryside before hitting the 38 mile checkpoint, where they will be given a choice to skate ahead, bus ahead, or bus back to Athens. People all around the world come to this event, so make sure to register on Saturday at The Classic Center from noon to 6 p.m.! Skaters will depart from the Center at 7:30 a.m.

On Friday, check out Nuçi's Space 11th Anniversary celebration. This resource center for musicians will celebrate its birthday an open house featuring a silent auction, refreshments, and live music. It's time to bring out the kids on Sunday, because Disney's "My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto's Musical Tale" is coming to Morton Theatre! Getting to Know Historic Athens: Classic City Tours

When getting to know people, I feel it is important to learn about their history and background to better understand how they have come to be who they are today, and I think this applies to places as well. Take Athens, Georgia, for example. This city has such a vibrant and diverse environment and is home to one of the nation's finest universities; where and how did it all start? Surely such an interesting place must have a history worth learning about.

It is with this thought in mind that I went on the Athens Heritage Tour, offered daily and one of the many Classic

City Tours made available by the Athens Welcome Center. This particular tour takes you through the historical districts of Athens, which I thought were probably areas that I didn't really pay attention to or pass through during my day-to-day life. How wrong I was!

This tour begins in the Church-Waddel-Brumby House which is home to the Athens Welcome Center; it is also believed to be the oldest residence in Athens, GA. The house itself is designed to take you to the time period of 1820-1829. As you walk through its rooms decorated in hand-painted wallpaper as well as period furniture, you are truly taken back through time. After exploring this memory-filled home, it's time to board the shuttle and see other historical buildings and sights.

It was during this portion of the tour that I was astounded by how much of Athens' beautiful sights I had missed or taken for granted while driving around these past three years. The historical neighborhoods were a really special visual experience, and, for me personally, quite inspirational as I now know that I must have Victorian lace ironwork for my future home (it's gorgeous!). You are also able to see some unique Athens landmarks such as The Double-Barreled Cannon as well as The Tree that Owns Itself. While driving through areas more familiar to me, I realized how interesting it was to learn about the origins of these preserved buildings and homes that are now used to house local businesses, museums, event space, and more.

And speaking of interesting things, some of the facts we learned on the tour were pretty neat! Did you know that the University of Georgia was not originally supposed to be built in Athens? Actually, the decision-making factor was that Watkinsville, the other city in consideration, had a pub (which was something Athens did not have at the time, surprisingly), and people didn't want the students to be distracted from their studies. It's tidbits like this that make the tour so interesting as well as visually-appealing.

I do wish I had been able to take personal pictures to share with you the beauty of the tour, but unfortunately, my camera battery decided to malfunction on the day of the tour. If you're wondering about what to do this weekend in Athens, GA, you are in luck! This coming weekend is absolutely packed with fun events, festivals, and concerts, and they are all listed on the Athens CVB Event Calendar. I couldn't even start to tell you about everything going on this Friday through Sunday, but I wish I didn't have to narrow down this awesome list of things to do. Despite the fact that this Saturday is not a gameday, this weekend in Athens is going to be anything but boring.

1. This weekend is actually getting started on Thursday as the 1st Annual Athens Pride Weekend kicks off at the UGA Founders Memorial Garden! This celebration has grown from a Sunday picnic into a weekend full of amazing and fun events. On Friday, Farm 255 will be hosting a Dragaoke night from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.. From 1 - 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition will be hosting a beer bust at the Little Kings Shuffle Club, and this will be followed by Dancing thru the Decades at New Earth Music Hall from 6 - 10 p.m.. The event will come to a close on Sunday with a service at Our Hope Metropolitan Community Church from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; there will also be a Cookout and Celebration of Commitment at Lake Harris from 2 - 6 p.m. followed by Drag in the Rink from 8-11 p.m. at Skate Around USA. Find some time off and take part in this wonderful new Athens celebration!

2. Calling all film fanatics! The 8th Annual Dixie Film Festival is taking place this weekend from noon - midnight on Saturday and from 1 p.m. - midnight on Sunday at the Morton Theatre. This international film festival does highlight Georgia filmmakers and local talent in their special Mason-Dixie screenings. The films will be competing for the following awards: Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Peach Fuzz Award, Best Comedy, Best Animation, Best Documentary, Best Foreign, Best Screenplay, and the Mason-Dixie Award. If you only want to watch a few films, admission is $10 per 2 hour screening; however, if you would like to fully partake in this event, there is a $35 all-festival pass. You can purchase your tickets at the door or online -- go and support your local filmmakers!

3. I don't know about you all, but I have been excited for this coming Sunday for a while now. Why, you ask? Because world-renowned DJ, Tiesto, is coming! Tiesto, who is arguable one of the biggest and most well-known DJs in the world, has truly transformed the world of trance; chances are, even if you don't care for trance or don't think you've ever heard trance, you most likely have heard one of Tiesto's worldwide hit singles on the radio. And this show is sure to be one to look forward to; Tiesto is known for creating dance music spectaculars no matter where he is performing (he invests heavily in his own sets by employing his own light, sound, and visual crews!). The arena-sized dance party begins at 8 p.m. at the Classic Center.

None of the above sound like a promising weekend for you? No worries! There are plenty of other events going on -- read on for more!

Feeling like you belong in the wrong decade? Head over to The Melting Point this Friday at 9 p.m. for the Totally '80s party with the Highballs! Bring your legwarmers and hairspray and get ready to dance the night away to covers of some of the greats - Madonna, Duran Duran, Journey, and more! General admission is $10, and doors open at 6 p.m. for dinner and drinks.
If you're disappointed that you can't tailgate in Athens this Saturday, then make sure you head out to the Terrapin Brewery for its 2nd Annual Hop Harvest Festival. From 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., you can enjoy educational speakers, delicious food, as well as the harvesting of Terrapin's hop garden. And don't worry, the brewery will be featuring 12 casks of ale showcasing their different varieties of hops!
Looking for a family-friendly event? The 27th Annual North Georgia Folk Festival will be held this Saturday from noon - 8 p.m. at the Sandy Creek Park. There will be traditional folk music as well as craft demonstrations and sales. The kids will love playing with the arts and crafts and animals!

Roll With Athens' Toughest Ladies: The Classic City Roller Girls

What are girls made of? Sugar and Spice, and Everything Nice?

Before you answer that, meet The Classic City Roller Girls- a group of Athens girls who'd love nothing more than to show you, and a packed arena of spectators, just exactly what they are made of. And I can go ahead and tell you, it is not sugar.

The Classic City Roller Girls are a tangy, tough team of fierce female athletes on skates, and often also, in fishnets and fake eyelashes. Today, the all-American contact sport of Roller Derby is revived and thriving among aggressive women all over the world. And Athens, GA, is no exception- with ever-expanding local interest making The Classic City Roller Girls impossible to ignore.

I already knew a lot about the pop culture praise of the national Roller Derby scene when I heard about the Athens league, but after attending my first actual bout at the Athens Arena, I gained a whole new respect for the sport and the Classic City Roller Girls. Roller Derby is fully physical, highly energized, heart-pumpingly exciting, and just incredibly fun to watch. I have attended few sports events quite like a Roller Derby bout, and we are lucky enough in Athens, GA to have a dedicated team worth watching and cheering on manically from the stands.

In more focused moments of my Roller Derby viewing experience, I was able to stay quiet long enough to capture a few videos. Later, I was even able to interview a few of the Athens' roller girls myself. How to Be a Painter for a Day - Art Experiences in Athens for the Non-Artist

I will be the first one to tell you that I am no artist. In fact, the last art class I had was in elementary school, where I remember making a crooked clay pot constructed with uneven coils (I gave it to my mother, and it now proudly stands hidden in our basement). But this doesn't mean I don't appreciate art and those who create it. In fact, something I love about Athens is its great art scene -- there are so many exhibits to see and so many local artists that are showcased in different Athens businesses.

So maybe you will understand my excitement when I heard about the opening of Artini's this past summer. If you haven't heard of them, they basically have a set calendar each month of different paintings; you choose which painting you like, register for the class, and show up that night ready to stir your creative juices!

They will teach you step-by-step how to paint the chosen piece of artwork, so if you're a beginner like me, you will have no problem creating a masterpiece. Even experienced painters and artists are welcome, however; if you want to add your own flair, use different colors, or change certain aspects of the design, you are totally welcome to do so. You are provided with all the necessary tools to make your painting: an apron, easel, canvas, paints, brushes, etc.

I was very excited the week before going in to paint my "Sitting Pretty" piece. The night of, I arrived at Artini's at around 6:30 (they recommend getting there 30 minutes early in order to get a parking space in the limited lot they share with Gigi's Cupcakes and Sweet Peppers Deli), and used my extra time to look at some of the great art being displayed in the space as well as get myself situated. I talked to a few of the people sitting around me; many of them also were first-timers sharing the same excitement and nervousness I felt about how the painting would turn out. As our instructor began the class, we set to work on our canvases, equipped with our brushes and aprons.

As we got further into the session, we all started

really having fun with our paintings! Looking around, I saw a variety in designs and colors, and even the instructor was giving suggestions on how to alter the paintings to one's own taste. She gave us plenty of time for each step to make sure that everyone was happy with their work, and even though I sometimes worried about small imperfections and details (those thin branches gave me a very difficult time), I was very content with the final outcome.

What made Artini's a great experience besides the fact that I came out of it with something nice to put in my room? First of all, the people at Artini's create a really fun and relaxing atmosphere; they are very personable and like to get the classes pumped by playing music and serving beverages. This brings me to my second point: they offer refreshments while you paint, so if you are of age, you can order a bottle of wine with your friends. This would make a great place to have a private party for birthdays or any other special events.

Now, I do know there are other places in Athens that offer similar types of experiences, such as Pints & Paints and Sips n Strokes. Unfortunately, I personally have not had the opportunity to visit these places; however, I have heard great things from people who have gone. I would like to eventually go, since each place offers such distinct options, and honestly, my room is a little bare.

It's that time again! The weekend is fast approaching, and if you're looking forward to getting out and about, then Athens, Georgia, is definitely the right place for you. Read on to find out some of the exciting happenings occurring in the Classic City this Friday through Saturday!

Looking to enjoy Athens' famed music scene? You should definitely check out Buckethead at the Georgia Theater this Friday, Sept. 16th. Buckethead is one of the top virtuoso guitarists in the world, and he experiments with many different genres of music from progressive metal to bluegrass. He is known for his signature bucket hat and wacky performances which sometimes include nun chucks, robotic dancing, and toy trading. Lynx will be opening for this show; she will take you through a variety of emotions with her mix of melancholy melodies and catchy pop hooks. Make sure you don't miss out on this awesome night of music! Tickets are $20, and you can purchase them online. The show begins at 9:00 p.m., and doors open at 8:00 p.m..

Get pumped for another Football Saturday! Bring out your favorite red and black wear and come early to tailgate -- show your spirit and support for the Dawgs! Join the rest of the Bulldawg Nation at Sanford Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 17th, when UGA takes on Coastal Carolina. Be loud and be proud, and show the rest of 'em how great it is to be a Georgia Bulldawg! Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.

Heritage Walks: Walking the Hill. John Knowlton and Lee Epting will lead this two-hour walking tour around the series of historical homes saved from demolition and collectively known as "The Hill". If you are interested in taking part, book your tickets online in advance! The tour will begin at 2:00 p.m. and is located at 1800 Crescent Lane.

Hurry and get your tickets for the Laughing Pizza Concert at Morton Theater this Sunday, Sept. 18th. This family-friendly band is a favorite on PBS TV, and a portion of the proceeds will go to support the station. The show starts at 4:00 p.m., and if you purchase your tickets now, they are $17 for adults and $15 for children.

Favorite Athens Deals: Ethnic Food

Let's face it. We're all looking for ways to save money. It's usually a difficult task, particularly when revolving around the very vital process of keeping yourself fed. With all the delicious options of restaurants located in Athens GA, it can be hard sometimes to pass up a friend's invitation to eat out. However, my wallet just can't support my dining decisions, and I find myself following the typical college diet of ramen and fast food's dollar menus far too often.

After a few stomachaches too many, I decided to actively search for deals around Athens that would allow me to get away from the kitchen a few times each week (I have to confess - I abhor washing dishes). After asking my friends and spending a lot of time on Google and www.VisitAthensGA.com, I came up with a pretty substantial list of different places to try.

I can't say I've gotten to try even half the places on that list, but I did want to share with you some of the restaurants I have been to and thoroughly enjoyed. The topic of today's post? One of my favorite things to discuss -- ethnic food!

Now, when one thinks about eating on a budget, a restaurant specializing in sushi does not generally come to mind. However, Utage's lunch menu is the first steal I want to talk about. Because Japanese food is generally in the more pricey category, the lunch combination

option is a serious deal. You can choose two menu items from a given list (yes, sushi is on that list) which will be served with miso soup, salad, and rice, all for under $8! And don't worry if you can't stomach raw fish; they offer different meat dishes and noodles. They also have plenty of sushi rolls including only cooked protein. Of course, besides the awesome price, the food is tasty, fresh, and satisfying. On a side note - if you are a fan of tofu, I would highly recommend the agedashi tofu. This dish contains cubes of silky tofu encrusted with a delicately crispy layer sitting in a sauce that I dream about sometimes.

This next deal is so good, it has been solely responsible for the end of my dinnertime fast-food

runs. Many in the Athens community rejoiced when Maba Grill, a Vietnamese bistro, opened up

downtown. What's not to love? Big steaming bowls of chewy noodles and crunchy bean sprouts, delicious options for both meat-lovers and vegetarians, grilled meats sitting on top of beds of noodles or rice awaiting a sprinkle of fish sauce...all ready to be consumed! But what I really want to highlight here is my personal favorite to order - the banh-mi, or Vietnamese sandwich. You get an option of chicken, steak, mushroom, or tuna on your sandwich, which is comprised of a complex mixture of flavors and textures all contained within a crusty baguette. The best part? It's less than $4! With this low price, me and a couple of my friends have been known to purchase multiple sandwiches during a single visit in order to save some for later.

My last deal is an Athens favorite. I have been to the Latin American Cali N Tito's too many times to count, and I will continue adding on to that number until I am no longer within driving

distance of the place. This place has earned itself a permanent place on the Athens dining map

through its fun atmosphere, reasonable prices, and consistently great-tasting food. While dinner is inexpensive as well, the real deal comes during lunchtime. During lunch, you can get a combo

that includes an entree, a side, and a drink (try the limeade if they haven't run out of it!) for around $7. It's an enormous amount of food for a very small price, and the restaurant is a great place to go with your friends. As for any personal recommendations of mine....well, I seriously recommend that you go as many times as you can so you can try the whole menu. I am particularly fond of the sweet plantains, which are always very nicely caramelized, but honestly, all of the sides are equally as good.

I wish I could talk more about other places I have found, but if I didn't limit myself to three restaurants, I might never stop! Even though I condensed my list, though, doesn't mean you have to as well -- what are some of your favorite deals in Athens when it comes to ethnic foods? Get Ready for Game Day - Athens GA This Weekend: Sept. 9-11 Events and Things to Do

As the week winds down and my energy levels start to decrease, I begin to employ a personal technique to get me through to Friday, and I'm sure some of you use it, too. A sure method of revving myself back up is to plan for my weekend; I love finding about the numerous events happening in Athens over the weekends and deciding which of them capture my interest.

Are you like me? Does planning ahead for your free time give you that extra burst of excitement and motivation? If so, I'm glad you have come, because I have several events for this weekend's calendar that I would love to share with you all!

1. Want to experience Athens' famed music scene? You should definitely check out the Athens-based band Futurebirds as they perform at the Georgia Theatre on Friday. This band has been praised for their undeniable character and ethereal sound. Their opening act is Gary Clarke, Jr., a singer-guitarist who has been making waves within the music industry and garnering support from well-known artists such as Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow. This will be yet another great show from a great Athens venue, and it only costs $12! Doors open at 8 p.m.; Clarke's set begins at 9 p.m., and at 10, Futurebirds will take the stage. Keep in mind that this is not a family event; all shows at the Georgia Theatre are 18 and over.

2. Calling all of Bulldawg Nation -- the first home game of the football season is finally here! This Saturday, thousands of people will be coming together at Sanford Stadium to cheer on the Dawgs to victory. They will be playing the South Carolina Gamecocks at 4:30 p.m., and if you weren't able to get tickets, do make sure to tune in on ESPN. Grab your friends and join the tailgating festivities, or just make it a party in your very own living room. Also, if you're coming from out of Athens to see the game, make sure to check out some great hotel deals from the Athens website. Go Dawgs...Sic 'Em!

3. This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of September 11th, and I'd like to highlight the September 11 Memorial Ceremony that occurs right here in Athens. It is located on Bob and Nancy Hart's property; they decided to build a memorial garden and trail after a visit to New York City. The ceremony will include a choral group and a reading of each of the victims' names, and the Harts encourage attendees to walk the trail either before or after the 30 minute ceremony. This event takes place on Sunday at 6:30 p.m., and there is no admission fee. The trail itself is filled with artwork and structures all commemorating the lives lost on that day.

Experience the full moon while on the water at Full Moon Paddles hosted by the Sandy Creek Park. Admission ranges from $5 to $12 depending on whether you are a resident and whether you bring your own boat. It is held on Friday and Saturday from 8-10 p.m., and make sure you register in advance! This event is for ages 12 and older.
Don't miss the Edmund Lewandowski: Precisionism and Beyond exhibit at the Georgia Museum of Art this Saturday. Lewandowski was an artist and educator who chose architectural and industrial images as his subject matter; catch his work from 12-5 p.m.!
Looking for a little something different to round out your football weekend? Try Football Weekends at Hotel Indigo, where you can celebrate our team by enjoying live music. On Friday, listen to Justin Brogdon from 4-7 p.m., and on Saturday, make it a day-long affair by joining them for the pre-game radio broadcast as well as a post-game tailgate.

Athens' Vegetarian Hotspots

Those of you with vegetarian friends know the limited options vegetarians face in the restaurant scene. They are either stuck with the one entree on the menu that meets their dietary needs or forced to pick the salad. As a food lover myself, I feel as though the abundance of choices and delicious descriptions on page after page of a menu is half the adventure of dining out. With a thriving vegetarian population in Athens, GA, I have always wondered how they all survived on such limited options.

Well, last Wednesday I tasted veggie heaven. My vegetarian friend was ecstatic that our dinner crew let her pick the restaurant for the night. While we had all heard raving reviews, none of the meat-eaters in the group had ever been to The Grit. Feeling adventurous in our last year in college, we were excited to try something new. Little did we know how much we would all actually love it.

Surrounded by a relaxed, local vibe, the menu was endless. Noodle bowls, stir fry, falafel sandwiches, quesadillas, pita pizzas, loaded nachos - the list went on and on. After thinking long and hard about all of my options, I ordered the grilled cheese smelt, and I can guarantee you it was one of the best decisions of my day. With chips and vegetables on the side, the fresh thick and well-buttered bread oozed with delectable cheddar cheese. I pulled the two sandwich halves apart only to discover a sliver of crisp spinach and a bright red tomato just waiting to be savored. My friends' dishes filled the table with homemade macaroni and cheese, dusted with light brown bread crumbs and creamy golden cheese, a massive crunchy vegetable and cheese quesadilla, stuffed with flavorful peppers and onions, and a falafel pita, filled with chick pea fritters, veggies and lemon-tahini dressing. Needless to say, it didn't take any of us long to dig in and polish off the plate. The meal was refreshingly different than many of the Athens restaurants we have eaten at before, and the fresh ingredients and local touches left us with full stomachs and a new favorite restaurant.

Of course Athens has an abundance of other restaurants that provide its vegetarian crowd with meat-less options. While most of them are not exclusively vegetarian, their menus offer selections for stricter diets. Clocked for example, a quaint but retro small burger and sandwich joint, has great vegetarian options including a humus sandwich, a hot falafel sandwich, and their juicy veggieburgers that taste just as good as the flavorful burgers they're known for. Local favorite Mama's Boy is also vegetarian-friendly and will easily prepare menu items without meat upon request. With a menu designed exclusively for its Athenian diners, the Athens' Buffalo's Cafe location also provides vegetarian options that are unique to the franchise. An entire page of the menu is dedicated to garden burrito wraps, tortilla broccoli and penne pasta, spinach quesadillas, veggie fajitas, and so much more.

While I may never be a vegetarian myself, its exciting to know that the amazing assortment of Athens restaurants takes care of its vegetarian residents and visitors.

Pack Up Your White Clothes - Athens GA This Weekend: Sept. 2-4 Events and Things to Do

Why are we not supposed to wear white after Labor Day? A quick search on Google provides many, varying answers, but there is only one answer that matters to me: after this weekend, I'll only be needing my red and black, because football season is coming!

Fortunately, we have a holiday weekend before then, and if you're like me, you are looking forward to a great weekend of fun and relaxation. Where better to spend such a weekend than in Athens, GA? The Classic City has a variety of awesome events going on, and no matter what your interests are, there is something for you!

1. Do you love bluegrass and Americana music? If so, be sure to check out the Del YEAH! Festival on Friday, Sept. 2nd. For $20, you can enjoy an amazing lineup of musicians such as The Welfare Liners, the David Mayfield Parade, Drew Emmitt and Danny Barnes, Cornmeal, and the legendary Del McCoury Band. The event will take place, rain or shine, right outside the Terrapin Brewery starting at 5 p.m., but be sure to get there early to get a good view. This is a great family event, and any children age 10 and under get in free! Bring your folding chairs, but leave the coolers at home - there will be concessions, including your favorite Terrapin beer, for sale.

2. If you're a foodie like me, you will absolutely love visiting the Athens Farmers Market this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Head over to Bishop Park Saturday morning to peruse the freshest Athens-grown produce, sample delicious prepared foods, do some art and craft shopping, and enjoy the live music. They do accept debit and credit cards, so don't worry if you aren't in the habit of carrying around cash. Support your local farmers and artisans, bring your grocery list, and beat the heat of the afternoon!

3. Haven't had the chance to visit the newly-expanded Georgia Museum of Art yet? This weekend is your perfect opportunity since they are holding a temporary exhibition to introduce the public to 3 of their 4 new Study Centers in the Humanities! Enjoy all the paintings, prints, drawings, photos, and letters; some of the archival materials on display are related to Alfred Heber Holbrook, the founder of the GMOA. The museum is open from 12-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.

These are only three events out of many going on in Athens GA this weekend, however! Be sure to check out the following events if you're looking for more experiences to pack into your holiday.

Music lovers should look into an Evening of Motown and R&B at The Melting Point this Friday. The Splitz will be bringing their fun and funky stage show to Athens; this all ages event should not be missed. Get there before 9 p.m. and bring your dancing shoes!
Looking to enjoy the great outdoors? Join the free Naturalist's Walk from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday. Go to the Sandy Creek Nature Center and ENSAT Center for a refreshing hike around the property. Don't forget your binoculars and cameras!
If you're trying to find something different, check out the Classic City Rollergirls Hollerin' Hootenanny on Saturday night. This night of fun and entertainment includes games, music, and dancing for only $3. It starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Little Kings Club and lasts all night. Don't miss out on the Watermelon Seed Spittin' Contest!

So Much To Do, So Little Time!

It wasn't until this past summer that the realization that I was about to embark on my fourth and final year at the University of Georgia. Naturally, all the thoughts of graduation and the "real world" entered my mind...Will I find a job? Where will I end up? Do I even know what I want to do?

Then, the real question hit me, and I started to feel a wave of panic. I only have one more year left in Athens?!

Those familiar with Athens, GA will understand my concern; there's so much to experience here, and of course you can't do things just once! There is the great variety of restaurants that cater to the most diverse range of tastes as well as the famed music scene filled with incredible talent. You can't forget the athletic events that bring in thousands of the most devoted fans nor can you ignore the nightlife that provides young and old alike with the perfect way to unwind after a long week.

It was love at first sight. The charm of downtown's historic landscape surrounded by dynamic creativity, unique shops, and friendly passerbys caught me off-guard. I hadn't expected my first college visit to be my one and only. But while visiting the University of Georiga four years ago to explore the Classic City, I immediately knew that Athens, Ga was exactly the town I wanted to call home.

My name is Katie Strasberg, and Athens, Ga is more than a home to me these days. Now a senior, my love for the southern charm and vibrant artistic scene of this Georgia town has flourished over the past four years. This amazing city has a personality of its own offering everything from farm-fresh fare at local restaurants to eclectic knickknack and gift shops that can be explored for hours. The music traditions of the town are unlike anything else, with a wide-variety of tunes played downtown at historic venues every night of the week and local musicians adding their personal touch to the ever-changing Athens culture.

Luckily for me, I have the opportunity to combine my love for this city with my passion for public relations as a PR and social media intern at Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau this semester. As a public relations major earning a sociology minor and new media certificate, it's a perfect fit. Even though I have already savored a wide array of experiences in the Classic City, I cannot wait to explore and learn even more about its rich history and diverse attractions and pass it along to you.

I hope you are as excited as I am to begin discovering all that makes Athens, Ga. the culturally rich, uniquely creative, and always-vibrant southern town that so many have grown to love.

Bun Voyage: A Search for the Best Burger in Athens, Georgia

There are so many reasons why I have enjoyed college more than high school. Aside from the obvious (new-found independence, dining halls that are open 24/7, etc.), one of my favorite things about college is that I find, more often than not, that I actually enjoy my class assignments. Gone are the days of pulling my hair out over chemistry and calculus problems, and in their place: projects and assignments that I would actually describe as fun, and that I look forward to working on. Bun Voyage was one such assignment.

I took a social media seminar last semester, and one of our assignments was to keep a blog on any topic that we wanted. Because I had been blogging about my personal life for years now, I wanted to try something different. I wanted to take my readers on a journey, and also write about my love for food. After a little brainstorming, I came up with Bun Voyage, a journey to find the best burger in Athens, GA.

I spent all of my spring semester going out to eat at different Athens restaurants, eating burgers, and then writing about them and giving them a rating to help me determine just exactly what makes a great burger. My criteria included quality of the meat, freshness of ingredients, creativity, presentation, and then an overall rating.

Below are three of the best-rated burgers from my semester-long search:

1) Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Five Guys is about as traditional as a burger place can get. With a fairly simple menu of burgers and hot dogs, there's really no question on what you're going to get. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard and an order of Cajun fries.

The burger was cooked right there before my eyes and delivered hot to my table. The meat was extremely juicy (although it could have used a touch more salt), and the ingredients were all very fresh. The burger was huge, and way more than I could eat, but for only $5, that is hardly a problem.

For being ready in a flash, and for giving me a great value (and then some), I gave the burger at Five Guys an 8.5.

2) Clocked
The burger that I had at Clocked in downtown Athens was on the other end of the spectrum when compared to Five Guys. I had heard tale of a Peanut Butter Bacon Burger at Clocked, and it had gotten rave reviews from my fellow burger fans, but I wouldn't believe it until I tried it for myself.

Seated outside the diner with a cream soda and a cool breeze, I waited eagerly for a burger with a topping I had previously only reserved for toast. When it arrived, I was shocked by how delicious it was. The meat was flavorful and juicy, and the peanut butter added the perfect sweet accompaniment to the crispy bacon. Not to mention the tater tots with the blue cheese dressing. I remember feeling like I needed a nap after this burger, but before it made me sleepy, I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite.

For introducing me to the unsuspecting harmony of peanut butter and meat, and for being off the wall in general, I gave the burger at Clocked a 9.5.

3) Farm 255
I have never been bashful about my adoration for this lovely farm-to-table restaurant, but I had never thought of it as the kind of place I would go for a burger. However, one night at dinner with friends, I decided to see what kind of spin Farm 255 would put on a burger. With locally sourced meat and vegetables from nearby farms, I was expecting a burger that would be sure to please. And please it did.

The meat had that wonderful grassy flavor that only comes from cows happily chewing cud on a local farm, and the caramelized onions and sharp Tillamook cheddar provided the perfect sweet and salty flavors. The rosemary french fries were delicious as well, and the homemade pickles on top of the burger really emphasized just how much effort was put into producing the humble hamburger.

For homemade toppings, locally sourced ingredients, and giving me thoughts of happy cows on a nearby farm, I gave the burger at Farm 255 a 9.5.

The New Kid in Town: Athens,GA, Welcomes Menchie's Frozen Yogurt Shop

If there's one thing that residents of Athens, Georgia, can't get enough of, it's frozen yogurt. In the three years that I have lived in Athens, I have witnessed not one, not two, but three frozen yogurt shops pop up all across town. And now the Classic City is home to a new face on the frozen yogurt block: Menchie's Frozen Yogurt.

Menchie's follows several aspects of the the typical yogurt shop model: a variety of flavors of frozen yogurt, as well as a wide array of toppings that you add yourself. Like other shops in town, you don't pay by the toppings or flavors you get, but by how much your frozen treat weighs at the end. This gives you the freedom to pile on toppings to your heart's content.

Menchie's puts a fresh spin on just about everything they do. Menchie's rotates its flavors multiple times during the week, so you're never going to get bored of the same old chocolate and vanilla. And to suit those with special dietary preferences, they also feature no sugar added, dairy free, and low carb options. The list of flavors ranges anywhere from Chai Tea and Island Banana to Chocolate Espresso and Blueberry Cheesecake.

On top of that (literally) comes the options for different toppings. Every snack imaginable (mini pretzels, rainbow sprinkles, animal crackers, etc.) combined with fresh, seasonal options like strawberries, pineapple, kiwi and blueberries. In case that wasn't enough, you can also add a drizzle of hot peanut butter or fudge sauce to top it all off.

And we all know that a big part of what makes going out for a meal (or for frozen yogurt) enjoyable is the experience you have while you're out. Ricky Steele, owner of the newly opened Menchie's at the Beechwood Center in Athens, GA, takes great pride in the quality of its employees and the customer service he makes sure to show each and every customer. In addition, the bright decor and fun atmosphere of the shop make it a place where everyone from young children to college students to parents can kick back, relax, and enjoy a delicious frozen treat.

Although the Menchie's at Beechwood in Athens has been open for several weeks, they have planned a fabulous, three-day grand opening to introduce themselves to the Athens community in the hopes to become Athens' next favorite frozen yogurt shop. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, in Athens, is one of our city's most scenic spots and is one of our most popular attractions year-round. In summer, the Garden comes alive with music during the Sunflower Music Series, which brings some of Athens' best performers to the lovely lawn of the Flower Garden. Spread out a blanket and relax with friends and family for a perfect summer evening.

Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau intern Amanda Reyes headed out to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and caught the sights and sounds of Modern Skirts, plus the new Garden Gates art exhibition.

Dog Days of Summer: Why Athens, Georgia, is the Pet-Friendliest Town Around

One of my best friends is named Daisy. She has long, wavy, absolutely beautiful golden hair, and she hasn't touched a curling iron in her life. She wakes up every morning looking like a million bucks, while I am in the bathroom, only hoping to achieve such effortlessly perfect locks. She has big, chocolate-brown eyes, and just one flutter of those golden-tipped eyelashes has every boy on the block staring. She is in amazing shape, which is no wonder considering the amount of running that she does every day; yet, somehow, I've never seen her sweat. And on top of that, she is one of the most loyal friends I have, and she treats every time she sees me like it's the first time we've been together in years, full of joy and enthusiasm and excitement.

...did I forget to mention that Daisy is my dog?

Whoever said that dog was man's best friend was right on the money. Daisy might be a one-year-old yellow lab mix that I found via petfinder.com, but she is one of the best friends I could have asked for. And as a resident of Athens, Georgia, I get the feeling that many of the people here also count their furry, four-legged friends among their best ones.

One of the things that stands out about Athens is just how pet-friendly this city really is. From restaurants that welcome pets to stores that put on fashion shows with canine counterparts, pets are welcome all across the city.

If you're visiting Athens from out of town and would like to bring your pet with you, there are plenty of hotels that cater to pets. If your pet is used to being treated like royalty (and let's face it, aren't they all?), then he will feel right at home at Hotel Indigo in downtown Athens. Not only is your pet given a warm welcome upon your arrival, he is also fitted with a stylish Hotel Indigo collar and given both a bed and bowls to make his stay as comfortable and luxurious as possible. If you happen to stay on a Wednesday night, bring your pet to Canine Cocktail Hour from 5-7 p.m. where your pet can mingle with other pets and where you can enjoy a delicious $3 Salty Dog or Greyhound beverage.

It can be frustrating to travel with a pet when it seems like you can't take them anywhere, especially to some of the city's best restaurants. But many Athens restaurants are pet-friendly, and you'll find that a great deal of the local eateries with outdoor seating will allow you to bring your furry guest along for lunch.

Big City Bread Cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and their large outdoor patio is shaded by big, leafy trees. And we all know that shade is a dog's best friend on a hot summer day. Relax on the patio and enjoy a slice of their "Quiche of the Day" with local produce along with a bowl of Tomato, Goat Cheese and Scallion Soup. Or go for dinner and splurge a little bit on the Rabbit Cassoulet or Coq Au Vin. If you're too full for dessert, grab several of their home-baked desserts to nibble on later, because trust me, you won't be able to resist once you see them.

Even though the temperatures are reaching into the low 90's lately, it's still important for you and your pet to get some exercise, although early morning or late afternoon hours might be kinder to you both. Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services maintains over 2,500 acres at 41 different parks, many of which are open to pets as long as they're on a leash. If your pet wants to run free and wild, dog parks can be found at Memorial Park, Sandy Creek Park and Southeast Clarke Park.

Southeast Clarke Park is home to Wiggley Field, which accommodates both small and large pets with two smaller parks in one. And for the dog who wants to show off a little bit, Wiggley Field offers an agility course with tunnels, ramps, poles, and anything else you want to use to show off your pet's skills. Another cool thing about this dog park? A double water fountain, with a tall spout for those on two legs, and a shorter one for those on four.

But what if you don't have a pet, and all of this pet-friendly information about Athens is making you wish you had your very own canine companion? As many pets as there are in loving homes here in Athens, there are still many more in local shelters and humane societies that need a good home.

Whether you want to scout out your future pet, or simply volunteer a few hours to play with some of the cutest pups around, you can visit the Athens-Clarke County Humane Society every day (except Wednesday) from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. As a volunteer, you're welcome to take the dogs for walks around the grounds, play a little fetch, teach them a few tricks, or just give them a good belly rub while they nap in the sun. And if you find one that you just can't resist, well...what better souvenir to take back home from your trip to Athens, Georgia, than your new best friend?

Grammy-nominated musical artist Florence and the Machine soared to the top of the Billboard charts last year with her single, "Dog Days are Over." I hate to contradict you, Florence, but it seems as though the "dog days" of Athens are still in full swing.

Welcome Home: The Reopening of the Georgia Theatre

If Athens, Georgia, is known for anything, it's known for its music. R.E.M. and the B-52s put Athens on the map in the 70's, and since then, dozens of other notable artists and bands have strong Athens ties, such as Lady Antebellum, Of Montreal, Widespread Panic, Danger Mouse, and even John Mayer, who was first signed at the AthFest festival in Athens in 2001. Just a few weeks ago, The Huffington Post ranked the University of Georgia third on its list of "Most Hipster Colleges," and UGA owes its ranking to its location smack-dab in the cultural center of the city.

So it was no wonder that the Athens community was absolutely devastated when the renowned and beloved Georgia Theatre was gutted by a fire on June 19, 2009. Originally built by the YMCA in 1889, the building was turned into the Georgia Theatre in 1977 and hosted its first show in 1978. The Georgia Theatre then began its 33-year journey as one of the premier music venues in Athens.

It took several years and a great deal of generosity to rebuild this historic landmark. Hundreds of local citizens and businesses contributed to the rebuilding of the theatre, as well as many well-known bands, such as the Avett Brothers and the Zac Brown Band. To raise the rest of the money that they need to keep going, the Georgia Theatre has partnered with The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, a not-for-profit whose mission is to restore buildings of historic and cultural significance.

But even though their rebuilding isn't finished, the wait for the reopening of the theatre is finally over. The Georgia Theatre will host its "Grand Opening" for a solid two weeks during August, featuring a wide range of bands and artists. No matter which show you attend, you'll be participating in a little piece of Athens and Georgia Theatre history.

From August 1 through August 14, the Georgia Theatre will host 11 shows. Check out the lineup below:

Well Friends, the time has come to begin bidding farewell to the glorious summer season as July comes to an end this weekend in Athens, GA. The heat may stick around a while longer, but the days of summer freedom are dwindling quickly... so let's make the most of them! Athens, GA is up for one last fun, free adventurous weekend of July- are you?

1) Veer off the beaten path and take a culinary adventure to Roots Farm this Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31, for the Beaverdam SlowDown Dinner beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night. Discover the source of all your favorite Athens dining. Roots Farm is dedicated to growing fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables through natural and sustainable methods- they aim to distribute mainly to local establishments and to Community Supported Agriculture (kind of like a season pass to the farms produce- pay predetermined amount at beginning of season and receive fruit and vegetables throughout the year accordingly) The Beaverdam SlowDown Dinner at Roots Farm consists of two hour gourmet five course meal prepared by local chefs using locally grown foods, a short tour of the farm, and an open discussion about sustainable farming.

2) Stay up late at Terrapin for a late night tour and movie on the lawn beginning at 9:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30th, for a cause benefiting Film Athens- a non-profit dedicated to supporting and encouraging video production and digital media arts in the Athens community. The percentage night at Terrapin this Saturday night will cost $12, but will include eight ticket vouchers for 4-ounce brews and invitation to view "Planet 9 From Outer Space" on the lawn. So gather your friends and your favorite summer picnic blanket and prepare for lift-off at Terrapin Brewery!

Fun and Fit: Five Ways to Stay Active in Athens, GA

There you are again, at your usual gym, running on the treadmill just like you do three times a week. The TV in front of you is turned to a news channel discussing the latest headlines, but the volume is so low that all you can do is read the scrolling text at the bottom. You count down the minutes left in your workout, more ready for it to be over than you are proud of yourself for making it this long.

Sound familiar? For most people, this might sound a lot like your normal workout routine. I personally got so bored with this situation years ago that I stopped visiting a gym altogether. And even though I'm a college student who walks to class and around campus every day, I found that I still needed to get in a little more exercise, especially due to the fact that I tend to follow the diet of your typical college student (pizza at 2 a.m.? Why not?).

The title of this post might be a little cheesy, but I think those three words that begin with "F" are very important. Everyone knows it's important to be fit, but is there any reason we can't have fun while doing so? And five is significant because that shows just how many ways there are to stay active and have fun while doing so here in Athens, GA.

1) Active Climbing. Whether you have been rock climbing for years, or are eager to finally learn how, Active Climbing is the indoor activity in Athens, GA, for you to tone your arms and legs, defy gravity, and beat the summer heat all at the same time. Their indoor climbing wall gym features state-of-the-art climbing walls for all ages and experience levels.

Active Climbing offers a variety of special deals and discounts for both Athens residents and college students: Monday is Ladies Night, Wednesday is Student Night and Friday is Family Night. Hours vary during the week, but you won't want to miss a Tuesday or Thursday night, where it's "Climbers' Night." The gym is open until midnight and promises "crazy music and good times!" This makes Active Climbing the coolest place to be in Athens, GA, on a Thursday night.

2) Big Dogs on the River. There's nothing better than kayaking down a lazy river on a warm summer afternoon in Athens, GA, enjoying the cool water beneath you and the scenery as you float by. And if you can get some exercise in too, what could be better? Kayaking is a surefire way to tone your shoulders and back muscles, and the glistening water droplets both make your toned arms look that much better and help cool you off.

At Big Dogs on the River, you can enjoy the beauty of the Middle Oconee River and take a one or two hour kayaking trip right here in Athens, GA. They offer kayaking rentals and river trail service, as well as a peaceful picnic and recreation area where you can relax after your trip downstream. The cost is $15 per person on weekdays and $20 on weekends, but the day of relaxation and exercise you'll get from your kayaking trip is worth every penny.

3) Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail. If your idea of fun is getting up close and personal with some of Athens' native wildlife, then look no further than Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail. Located within Memorial Park, Bear Hollow is a small zoo that is home to over 120 species of animal, including bears, bobcats, river otters and owls, just to name a few. Birchmore Trail, a mile-long nature trail, runs through the zoo, giving you plenty of opportunity to walk while observing some of Georgia's local critters. The Athens zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is free to the public. If you get a chance, visit the zoo on the second or fourth Saturday of each month for a special guided tour of the zoo and a chance to get up close and personal with some of the zoo's furriest friends.

4) Skate Park of Athens. People often forget just how great skating is as a form of exercise. It's a great cardio workout, not to mention the anaerobic benefits. If you get tired of running, then skating is a great alternative. And whether you're the next Tony Hawk or can only barely manage to stand up on rollerblades, you'll be sure to enjoy the skate park right here in Athens, GA. This 14,000 square foot facility at Southeast Clarke Park also welcomes skateboarders and BMX bikers, so no matter what type of wheels you like to ride on, you're welcome at the skate park. The park is open every day from 8 a.m. until dark, and is free to the public.

5) World of Wonder Community Playground. Whether you're a kid at heart, or you actually have several children of your own, nothing will light up a child's eyes like the World of Wonder playground. Constructed in 2004 by 1,500 volunteers, it is the largest volunteer built playground in the state of Georgia, and is proud to call Athens its home.

Complete with almost two acres of playscapes, mazes, slides, swings, bridges, tunnels, and climbing walls, there will be no end to things for children to entertain themselves with, and it's certain that they'll be exhausted by the end of the day. You might be as well, after chasing them around a park of this size. The playground also features an enclosed toddler area, gardens, and outdoor children's art. The park is free to the public and is open during daylight hours seven days of the week. For family fun in Athens GA, the World of Wonder playground is a great way for children and parents alike to have fun as well as enjoy this wonderful contribution to our city.

When I was in high school, I spent every afternoon with my eyes glued to the Food Network. One of my favorite shows was Rachael Ray's "$40 a Day," where Rachael would travel to cities around the country and eat three meals for under $40. But not only did she eat meals; she also experienced a little bit of something unique that each city had to offer, whether it was visiting an art gallery or taking a historic tour through the city.

This is my version of that show, but this time it's in Athens, Georgia. It's also the more affordable, $30 a day version. As a college student, I love taking advantage of opportunities for fun things to do, and if they happen to be free, then that certainly doesn't hurt either.

So this is my guide to experiencing Athens, Georgia, for only $30. I'll tell you where to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as the ways to spend your time in between, experiencing some of the most fun and unique activities that Athens has to offer (did I mention they're all free?).

9 a.m. Wake up to the smell of freshly made coffee at Jittery Joe's Coffee Roasting Company, a local Athens business, where you can get up close and personal with your beans while they roast. Enjoy the aroma surrounding you while sipping on a cup of joe for around $1.50.

9:30 a.m. Right up the street from Jittery Joe's you will find Five Star Day Cafe, a beloved local cafe that serves up some of the best breakfast around. Start off your day the economical (and delicious!) way with a Bacon, Egg'n Cheese biscuit for only $3.50.

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. It might be early in the morning for some, but Athens is already bustling by breakfast time. If you're looking for a good way to spend your time before lunch, here are some fun and free morning activities:

If you're looking to get in touch with your inner "Yogi," Rubber Soul Yoga here in Athens offers free yoga classes at 10 a.m. most mornings during the week. Whether you are a yoga master, or simply wish you were, there's no better way to start your morning than with a little physical and mental exercise.
Athens is home to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Drive over there for an early morning stroll through gardens showcasing both local and international flora. Free to the public, the Garden also features several nature trails, a cafe and a gift shop.
The Georgia Museum of Art is also lucky enough to call Athens home. Nestled in the middle of the University of Georgia campus, the museum opens its galleries to the public Tuesday-Sunday. With many pieces of beautiful and historic artwork, the museum is definitely worth an hour or two of your time.

12:30 p.m. Lunch time has finally rolled around, and after your yoga class, hike around the Botanical Garden and trip to the museum, you're famished. Nothing will hit the spot better than a plate of the best soul food that Athens has to offer. Two beloved and highly praised local soul food restaurants are Weaver D's and Peaches Fine Foods.
Fans of R.E.M. may remember their 1992 album, Automatic for the People, which was inspired by Weaver D's motto. And Mrs. Glenda's fried chicken at Peaches Fine Foods has developed a following unlike that for any other local fried poultry. At Peaches, you can get a meat, two vegetables, a bread (biscuit or cornbread) and a drink (sweet tea or lemonade) all for only $8. And I'm willing to bet it'll be the best $8 you spend all day.

2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Lunch is over, and hopefully you didn't eat enough to put you into a fried chicken coma, because there's so much more to do this afternoon in Athens. And even better, you're not going to spend a dime on any of it! If you want to take a nap, then that'll save you some money too. But if not, check out these free activities:

Outside of its music scene, Athens is probably most widely known as the home of the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!). Founded in 1785, UGA is the nation's first state-chartered institution, and with that date comes all kinds of cool and historic stories. Take a free tour of historic North Campus through the UGA Visitors Center and see where it all began.
Just across Broad Street from North Campus is downtown Athens. Rolling Stone has recognized Athens, GA, and UGA in their "Schools that Rock" college guide, and a few steps into downtown will tell you why. Filled with chic boutiques, quirky vintage shops, farm-to-table local eateries, and multiple notable music venues, Athens has something for everyone. Walking around downtown Athens is a fun and easy way to see what the city has to offer. And at least it's free to window shop, right?
If you'd rather trade in the city streets of downtown for the gravel and dirt lined paths of a local park, you're in luck. The North Oconee River Greenway offers 3.5 miles of trails and over 50 interpretive panels along the historic Heritage Trail. The Greenway also welcomes pet owners and picnickers alike to walk the trails and enjoy the recreation areas dotted throughout the park. Open sunrise to sunset, this park is free to anyone who'd like to walk, run, jog, or simply sit in a nice shady spot for the afternoon.

6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. No doubt that you've worked up an appetite from an afternoon of touring UGA, shopping downtown and taking a hike through the Greenway. What better way to spend your evening than with a meal at some of Athens' most highly esteemed restaurants? Yep, you can still afford it on your $30 daily budget! Farm 255 and Five and Ten are two award-winning restaurants that focus heavily on farm-fresh produce and locally sourced ingredients.

Sit out on the patio at Farm 255 below the strings of twinkling white lights and let the live music from inside float out to you while enjoying a plate of shrimp and grits ($17) or a vegetable plate full of local Athens fare ($12). Or enjoy a glass of wine with a smaller plate of local cheeses ($9) or a refreshing cucumber and tomato salad ($8).

Fans of the show Top Chef Masters might remember the man with the very intense eyebrows. We like to think of him as Hugh Acheson, the executive chef of Five and Ten and a five-time James Beard Finalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Named "Restaurant of the Year" in 2007 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Five and Ten is deserving of all the positive press it gets. You could have a light dinner of a bowl of corn soup with poached shrimp, vanilla and tarragon ($8), or go with something a little more substantial, like hand-cut pasta ribbons with roasted tomato and jalapenos ($17). Go early enough (reservations at 5:30, 5:45, or 6 p.m.) and get an entire three-course prix fixe meal for just $25!

If you want to splurge a little bit at dinner and go over your $30 budget, never fear, for you've only spent $13 by lunch time!

9:30 p.m. - bedtime: Dinner is over, but the night is still young. After a full day of fun and mostly free activities in Athens, GA, you're likely about ready to lay your head down on the nearest pillow you can find. But if you're eager to see where the night can take you, then you've got options galore:

Enjoy live jazz at Highwire Lounge for free, unless you decide to get one of their delicious signature cocktails, which Highwire is known for. And if you're still under budget, or even if you're slightly over, why not?
Walk the streets of downtown until you hear the faint sounds of music you like, and then walk right in to that club and dance. Very few of the clubs in Athens have cover charges, so you're free to dance the night away anywhere you find music that gets your feet tapping.
If you forgot to bring your dancing shoes, no worries. Athens has a bustling nightlife that has something for everyone. Whether you want to dance, listen to live music, or relax with friends in a cozy booth, you're bound to find the perfect way to spend your night.

There! You've done it! You've experienced Athens in one day for only $30! And to think, this is only one day in Athens. Imagine what you could do with a whole weekend?

Athens This Weekend: July 22-24

It's going to be one of those weekends in Athens, GA. You know, the kind of weekend with enough exciting events taking place around town for you to be able to customize your days specifically to your own interests. I suggest you start creating your itinerary now- so as not to miss the fun happenings going on in Athens, GA this weekend. There is:

1) Art to be discussed; If you haven't yet had the chance to visit the first Resident Studio Exhibition at ATHICA, featuring 30 oil paintings by Maxine Youngblood, then it's time to get out there and check it out in its final weekend. The exhibit's Closing Reception will take place Sunday, July 24, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will include an artist & curator Panel for open discussion and finally, a reception with the artist. Having not started creating art until the age of 52, Maxine Youngblood, now around 73 years old, nevertheless, creates vivid, rousing works of art. The 30 oil paintings being featured in ATHICA's Resident Studio exhibit are of that same nature, bright, colorful, and passionate, often likened to the style of French and German Expressionism. Curator Lizzie Zucker Saltz and Assistant Curator Ashley Westpheling largely selected works that were figurative in nature- representing pop culture icons like Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Donald Trump, as well as other local artists, performers, and models. If you already had the pleasure of visiting this exhibit or will be visiting for the first time this weekend, be sure to remember to come out for the closing reception on Sunday to hear about the works from the artist and curators themselves! 2) Music to be danced to; In its seventh consecutive year, the Annual Darius Goes West Benefit Concert will feature huge acts, such as Bubba Sparxxx and the Nappy Roots who will be accompanied by Georgia Gurlz and Elite Tha Showstoppa- doors open at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night at the 40 Watt. Tickets will be $10 in advance and anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Darius Goes West: The Roll of his Life is an award winning documentary that followed Darius Weems, a teen with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, on a 7,000 mile journey across the U.S. to spread awareness about the fatal DMD disease and raise money for researching a cure. The film was widely praised and raised over one million dollars for research. Since the film, a Darius Goes West Foundation continues to spread awareness and raise money through events such as the one taking place in Athens, GA this weekend. 3) Local commerce to be supported; The Athens Farmers Market is still in full swing, all local produce and crafts at their freshest and finest, Saturday at Bishop Park from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Your beautiful morning of perusing the displays of the healthy produce and delightful crafts in the sun will be set to a Celtic soundtrack this Saturday morning as Repent at Leisure will play at 8:00 a.m., but the track will flip with the soul folk sounds of local singer/songwriter Kyshona Armstrong at 10:00 a.m. I know it'll be Saturday, but the Athens Farmers Market is worth setting your alarm for this weekend! 4) Theater to be enjoyed; Opening night of The Circle Ensemble Theater performance of Metamorphoses will take place Thursday and run through the Saturday night, July 21-23, beginning each night at 8:30 p.m. in the pool at Ashford Manor. The play transforms ancient myth and lore into contemporary language in a story that takes place completely in and around a large pool of water. The Soul of the City in the Stomach of the People: Athens, GA Soul Food

With a proud history and culture of fabulous and unique dining options, Athens, GA is the kind of place where choosing a restaurant for dinner might make the most challenging and rewarding part of a person's day. And there is no greater culinary history and no greater challenge of choice than amongst the Soul Food restaurants of Athens, GA.

When I approach the delightful task of eating out in this town, I usually break the decision-making process up into a few steps. The initial task in the quest for a tasty meal out must begin by narrowing the options through personal preference by first choosing between food categories- Thai, Italian, Vegetarian, American and so on. The next step then includes a collaboration with dining partners on general price and seating preferences for the coming outing. Once all preferences have been discussed and accounted for, the perfect option should be relatively clear or at least reduced to a less daunting choice between 2 restaurants. My formula for efficient dining decision-making had worked flawlessly for me, that is until I was asked to choose between Athens Soul Food restaurants.

Each holding a similar yet completely distinct quality of character, two very special soul food restaurants left me unable to move past my final step. Unable to quantify what made each so unique yet connected, I set out to discover what was so special about these two Athens soul food favorites: Weaver D's and Wilson's Soul Food.

For all its fame and acclaim, Athens landmark and soul food restaurant, Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods still sits somewhat unassumingly at the end of E. Broad Street despite the vibrance of the new lime green paint covering its aging cinder block facade. Customers rush from around the block and across the world to order a paper plate bending with the weight of fried chicken and whatever else is on that day's menu before the kitchen runs out and closes up shop. Since inspiring the name of R.E.M.'s Grammy-nominated album "Automatic For The People," Weaver D's has of course experienced a greatly increased wealth of recognition, business, and culinary celebrity, but you wouldn't know that by walking through the front door, chatting with kitchen staff, and sitting down next to someone on their lunch break. Serving up the same rich, starchy flavors of all the best soul foods since 1986, Weaver D's hasn't changed much over the years, even after gaining national attention and praise as a beloved character of Athens music and food culture. Awarded the title of "American Classic" by the James Beard Foundation in 2007 (see video below!), the history of this soul food restaurant continues to be written. The awards and articles of praise aren't what make Weaver D's so special though, what really solidifies the little soul food shack's reputation is its unaffected commitment to the simple, but meaningful task of providing warm, delicious food to the people of a community. After over 30 years of change and progress taking place in the world outside its front doors, Wilson's Soul Food managed to stay frozen in time, serving up the same food to an ever-evolving, yet consistently loyal crowd of customers. Though it didn't have a hugely successful rock album named for it, Wilson's Soul Food still has an interesting history all its own. Centered smack in the middle of Athens' famous Hot Corner, an area of downtown known historically as an early conglomerate of many African-American owned businesses, Wilson's Soul Food opened second to Wilson's Styling Shop located directly next door and run by the same family. The Wilson family has been providing friendly services from their own little stretch of Hull St. since 1954. At the heart of the Wilson family business is just that, family, a warm greeting and a huge plate of comfort food for anyone who walks through the front door. The cafeteria-style buffet of steamy, heavy food may hard to choose from, but no one will rush you and as soon as you have a seat, all your worries in the world might just melt away with the perfect bite of mashed potatoes.

The rich food, history and sense of community encapsulated within Athens favorite soul food restaurants enrich the already diverse culture of this small Southern town. Without places like Weaver D's or Wilson's, Athens GA wouldn't be quite as magical as it is today. It's the long-standing commitment to place and community exemplified by these two great soul food restaurants that inspire and warm the creative soul of Athens, GA.

The summer heat has been a huge and steady companion to all venturing outdoors in Athens, GA these last couple of weeks- greeting all who exit the relief of air conditioning with an enthusiastic, all-consuming hug of humidity. But our good friend, Sweltering Heat, will be giving us some much needed space this weekend in Athens, GA, so let's make the most of it! With a varied calendar of options for all ages, plan on getting out and about for multiple weekend events!

1) Spend your Saturday morning in the midst of renewed classical antiquity and in the company of the little ones you love most at the Georgia Museum of Art Family Day event running from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The Family Day of July 16th will feature the Kress Collection, which includes 12 Italian Renaissance paintings donated in 1961 by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. The valued collection, which includes pieces from as far back as the 14th and 17th century, has been integral to the museum's educational function as university students, faculty, and art historians from all over the world come to study the works. The Family Day activities will include refreshments and the crafting of Renaissance-inspired picture frames in the first-floor classroom following an educational tour of the Kress Collection. This highly informative and engaging Family Day event at the Georgia Museum of Art will entertain parents and kids alike, so come out and see how you and your family will be inspired! 2) The museum isn't the only place to enjoy displays of inspired cultural expression in Athens, Ga this weekend- The Rialto Room will feature the latest segment of their "Go Green" Series benefitting the Oconee River Land Trust- A Songwriters in the Round event is set to take place this Friday night, July 15, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature songwriters of a Southern persuasion as all musicians fall under the country genre. This two week event, running from July 9 - 21, is sponsored by P.L.A.C.E., an Athens non-profit committed to maintaining and fostering the growth of a healthy, well-connected local food culture, seeking to unite the Athens community in an appreciation of good food from local vendors. The Taste Your Pie Contest event will take place this Saturday at the Athens Farmers Market around 10:00 a.m. Contest entry is open to all who provide $5, a pie and the recipe, contest tasting of all pies costs only $5 as well. Classic Looks in the Classic City: Athens, GA Vintage Clothes Stores

Walk a few blocks through downtown and you'll start to notice something, whether it be your chic barista at Espresso Royale or the window display of a hip boutique. The proof is everywhere: Athens, Ga has style.

The eclectic atmosphere of the city is not missed on the retailers in the downtown area. Of the many fun and quirky shops lining the blocks of this historic part of town, one type of store in particular seems to be a specialty of Athens fashion: Vintage. With seven vintage and consignment shops within a three-mile radius alone, the classic looks of the past are revived in the streets of the Classic City.

So when it came time to start shopping for a birthday present for my sister this year, knowing I wanted to find something completely unique and special, I decided a day of vintage scavenging was in order. After enlisting the help of my most enthusiastic and fashionable friend, Emily, I devised a plan of action. We would visit all seven vintage stores in the downtown area in one afternoon. And we would find my sister the perfect gift.

After a delicious lunch of jerk chicken and spicy squash at the new Indian and Jamaican restaurant, Kabana, Emily and I were energized and ready for our shopping day adventure.

First Stop: Ohh Boy! located at 766 W. Broad at The Money Machine! slightly outside of downtown. Somewhat new to the scene, Ohh Boy! is host to a collection of vintage clothing and housewares as well as artwork from local, independent artists. The shop functions almost as a gallery to local craftspeople who volunteer to work the cash register in exchange for space to display and sell their work. Racks of colorful and interesting old clothes greeted us even before the friendly cashier offered her assistance. After spending a sufficient period of time trying on old fur coats and holding up polyester pant suits to myself in the mirror, I finally got down to business. While Emily tried on handfuls of vintage treasures in the dressing room, I perused the jewelery and art section with a regained focus of purpose. Ooh Boy's accessory and craft section is like a candy land of unique and beautiful art in the form of silk bow ties, abstract hair clips, hand drawn postcards, bejeweled light switch covers, and much more. A string of finely detailed charcoal drawings hung on the wall at an almost devastatingly affordable price by a local artist looking to make a few bucks. Though it was just the first stop of a long day of vintage scavenging, I knew the charcoal drawing would make the perfect birthday gift for my sister- it was charming and completely unique. After much discussion, Emily decided on a couple clothing items and we both made our purchases, but vowed to continue on our vintage journey of Athens anyway. After all, I had a birthday coming up myself and I figured I could use a unique gift as well!

Second Stop: Community, located at 119 Jackson St., puts a chic spin on vintage in its upstairs boutique location. The store's interior design is as charming as the re-designed retro merchandise it displays. Color-coded racks of of all fabrics and cuts hang delicately around the loft space like they were always meant to be there. Community has the quality and feel of upscale and expensive tastes, but a few discreet peeks at the price tags will put the thrifty at ease. Each tag marks whether the item is vintage, locally designed, or redesigned for a better fit or a more hip look. Owner Sauni Baumgärtner and collaborator Karen Freed create the line of redesigned clothing, aptly named Community Service, in order to give life back to clothing that has fallen out of fashion or form- all in the spirit of the store's mission of promoting sustainability and local design. Open since September of 2010, Community has since proven worthy of its name as the store consistently hosts and partakes in local events. Scheduled to run at least 10 more classes in the month of July alone, Community frequently offers a wide variety of sewing and redesign workshops in the store's studio area- welcoming all who share a passion and interest in creative design.

As I slowly took in the chic Community store environment, Emily, who was visiting the store for the second day in a row, was already heading to a dressing room. After a friendly chat with the beautiful store owner, I found out about the store's sewing classes, recent fashion show, and the new vintage merchandise just brought back from Germany. I eventually broke down and tried on a few pieces for myself and immediately understood why Emily was back for a second trip so soon- the thoughtfully chosen and designed clothing has a very high quality feel, but is, best of all, completely original, local, and sustainable. One hour later, Emily made her purchases, and we slowly made our way on the next store.

Third Stop: Minx, located at 166 W. Clayton St., more than just sells vintage, it embodies it. The bell on the door is like the ringing of a time machine transporting anyone who enters into the mid to late 20th century. Old arcade machines, globe lighting, a friendly owner and his dog greet all who visit their retro model of the past. Minx has a style all its own in the Athens vintage scene with an atmosphere so lively you can almost feel its heartbeat. Overhearing Emily and me discuss the diminishing time on our parking meter and collective lack of change, owner Dave Wolfe popped open the cash register and handed us a quarter like he owed it to us. Left to my own devices while Emily added time to the meter, I managed to try on a few vintage dresses suggested by Mr. Wolfe (who seemed to instinctively know the complete fashion history of every item I picked up). Minx is a great store to spend extended periods of time in, trying on big hats, clip-on earrings, silk scarves or whatever suits your fancy- you'll always feel welcome and free to explore. A long debate about broaches carried on at the counter after I purchased a 50s-style, summer dress, until it was time for us to move on to our last stop.

Final Stop: Agora, located at 260 W. Clayton St. No vintage shopping day in Athens, GA would be complete without a stop at Agora. Prepare to be momentarily stunned by the famous labyrinth of antique furniture, home decor, jewelry, clothing, and miscellaneous other packed tightly into the store space. To fully peruse the hearty spread of Agora's merchandise requires patience and dedication, but the rewards are plenty if the right amount of time is allotted. Agora's stock is an amalgam of the best and most valuable items collected, it would seem, from the roadside yard sales and dusty attics of our nation's grandparents- which happen to include quite a few designer brands. There isn't a corner empty of antique or vintage artifacts waiting to be picked up and cherished by the next passerby- old bikes hang from the ceiling and plastic lamps illuminate the darkly lit aisles holding boxes of old campaign buttons, slightly damaged musical instruments, heavy racks of vintage apparel, or tall stacks of old luggage. Emily and I quickly lost each other in the jungle of mementos covering the store. The sound of haggling at the counter can usually be heard throughout the store as it is a special part of the Agora shopping experience. And Agora is, without question, a major part of the Athens Vintage experience.

After managing to hit 3 other vintage hot spots like Dynamite, Gigworn, and Cillies along the way as well, Emily and I finally ended our journey with empty pockets, tired feet, and a bounty of eclectic treasures. The vintage retailers of Athens provide more than just an abundance of unique options for today's retro trends, but also an appreciation of the value of history captured within the memorabilia of the past.

Athens This Weekend: July 8-10

The days following the 4th of July see sunburned cheeks, barbeque stains on white shirts, and a sense of relaxation and lazy summer enjoyment. Although everyone is just getting back into gear after a weekend of patriotic celebration, it feels like it's already time to see what this weekend has to offer. Coming up this weekend in Athens, GA, is a mixture of events that fit perfectly into that carefree summertime attitude we've all fallen into.

1) The Morton Theatre is easily one of Athens' most historic landmarks, as it is one of the first, and the only surviving African-American built, owned, and operated vaudeville theatres in the country. The historic building, opened in 1910, has recently been restored and adapted as a performing arts space.

If you have never attended a play or show at the Morton Theatre, then this weekend could be the perfect opportunity. On Saturday, July 9, One Dollar Enterprises will present "When God Calls, Will You Answer?", an inspirational gospel play that discusses the power of prayer and the importance of finding one's true calling in life.

2) Terrapin Beer Company is another highlight of Athens culture, and rarely will you find a brewery that's as eager to open up their doors and welcome the public as Terrapin is. Every Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., you can visit the brewery and sample an array of Terrapin's award-winning brews. You can also get a firsthand look into the production process with a tour that runs every 30 minutes. With live music and a fun and lively atmosphere, you'll find that Terrapin is the place to be on weekends in Athens.

Athens This Weekend: July 1-3

If you're like me, then you consider the 4th of July weekend to be easily the best weekend of the entire summer. Friends get together to grill hamburgers and hot dogs, eat sticky watermelon slices and rapidly-melting homemade ice cream, and pull up lawn chairs and blankets to watch the fireworks light up the night sky. Although Athens had to cancel their Star-Spangled Classic fireworks show this year, there are still plenty of options for some 4th of July fun this weekend!

1) If you want to get in the mood for the 4th with a mixture of bluegrass, americana and folk music, head on over to The Melting Point on Sunday for the Classic Cit y 4th of July American Music Festival. With over 10 acts on both indoor and outdoor stages beginning at 2 p.m., there will be music that celebrates America's roots all night long. With notable acts such as Ken Will Morton, Seven Handle Circus and Art Rosenbaum, this family-friendly event will be sure to entertain both the young and old.

Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door, but children 12 and under get in free! The show will begin, rain or shine, on Sunday, July 3rd, at 2 p.m. and will last through midnight. 2) Another option for celebrating America's independence with music will be at the Classic City Band Concert at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia on Sunday, July 3rd. The Classic City Band was formed in 1976 with the intent to preserve the rich culture and heritage of the American Concert Band, and is the oldest continuously functioning community band in all of Georgia. The Classic City Band gives free concerts throughout the year in Athens and local communities, and their annual concert at the State Botanical Garden has been popular for many years and always draws a full house.

The concert will feature lively, patriotic music and will be held in the Garden's Visitor Center & Conservatory. Concertgoers will enjoy air conditioning as well as a large, beautiful garden during the performance. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. and is free to all guests. 3) To learn more about the life of Lamar Dodd, one of Georgia's most influential artists, be sure to visit the Georgia Museum of Art for the Lamar Dodd: Paintings and Drawings exhibition. Dodd was responsible for revitalizing the art department of the University of Georgia in 1937, and is regarded as the "godfather" of the Georgia Museum of Art.

Born and raised in LaGrange, Dodd's work featured the southern landscapes, history, and people of the South. The exhibition will feature 100 of Dodd's images, some juxtaposed with related watercolors and paintings.

Athens This Weekend: June 24-26

This past Tuesday brought us the first official day of summer here in Athens, GA. This summer's hot, sunny days and warm, balmy nights will bring an abundance of fun events and activities to Athens, and this weekend is no exception. The arrival of summer also means rising temperatures (although it's hard to imagine it getting any hotter!), so make sure you've got your sunscreen and plenty of water, because you're not going to want to miss a minute of what's in store for this weekend!

1) Long-time residents of Athens, college students, and tourists alike will flock to downtown Athens this week for the 15th annual AthFest Music and Arts Festival. Beginning on Wednesday, June 22, and lasting through Sunday, June 26, AthFest boasts five jam-packed days of music and art that highlight and celebrate the local and regional talent that fills the Classic City.

Over 150 bands will perform at AthFest, both on outdoor stages that are free to the public as well as in some of Athens' renowned musical venues. With three days filled to the brim with performances, there's something to please every music-lover. In between shows, be sure to check out the Artists Market, where over 50 local artists will be showcasing and selling their original artwork.

For festival goers with children, or even just those who are kids at heart, there will be a KidsFest area with a variety of crafts, games, a parade, art contest, and musical performances that the whole family will love.

When it comes to a bargain, AthFest is one of the best you will find. All of the outdoor stages are completely free to the public, and for admission to any of the other events, an AthFest wristband can be purchased for only $15 in advance or $20 when purchased at the festival. 2) For those who want to take a break from the streets of downtown Athens and visit a place with a little more greenery, take a trip to the Trial Ga rd ens at UGA O pen Ho use on Saturday, June 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tucked behind Snelling Dining Commons on the UGA campus, the beautiful trial gardens are widely known for trialing annuals and perennials that can withstand the heat and humidity of the Southeast, as well as for developing new plants for the horticulture industry. If you want your own piece of horticultural history, you are welcome to purchase any of the plants that the gardens have for sale.

This special open house will also feature a guided tour by Dr. Allan Armitage and a signing of his book, as well as a group of area gardeners and UGA Horticulture Club members to offer advice to both aspiring and avid gardeners.

If you prefer your gardening with a healthy dose of football (who doesn't?), then you're in luck. Georgia football legend, former UGA Athletic Director and gardener extraordinaire Vince Dooley will be in the gardens from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. that same day! He will be signing his book and chatting with anyone who loves football and gardening as much as he does.

3) If you're looking to take a break from the heat during AthFest, what better way to cool down than by watching a locally filmed or produced movie in the air-conditioned theaters at Ciné? Running during the same days as AthFest, the AthFest FilmFest will feature a series of music films and local productions, as well as special guest filmmakers and musicians that will be present to answer any questions moviegoers might have. Check out some of the "rock docks" like Athens Burning, a documentary about the fire that destroyed the Georgia Theater and the efforts that helped to repair it. Also be sure to watch several of the Athens Teenscreen movies, short films made by up-and-coming Athens filmmakers. Movie times vary, and movies are either free or reduced price with the purchase of an AthFest wristband.

Excited for a new internship...and a summer in Athens!

It's hard to say what my favorite thing is about Athens. It might be the restaurants downtown that serve up local, home-grown fare from a farm only a few miles down the road. It could be the eclectic mixture of music, from bluegrass to jazz, that you can hear coming from inside clubs and music halls as you walk through town on a warm Friday night. It might also be the wonderful, southern hospitality of the people who live here, who always greet you with a smile on their face.

Or maybe my favorite thing about Athens is that I can't actually pick a favorite thing about Athens. My name is Sarah Varner, and I'm a few months away from beginning my senior year as a public relations major at the University of Georgia. I'm writing to you as one of the new PR and social media interns for the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau, and I hope that this internship will allow me to find out even more things that I love about this town.

In my three years as a student living in Athens, I've taken advantage of many of the opportunities that the city has to offer. From walks through the State Botanical Garden to tubing down the Broad River, from trips to the Athens Farmer's Market and shows at the 40 Watt, I have gotten a taste of the wide range of activities that go on year-round in Athens. But there's still so much more that I want to do, and try, and eat, and visit while I'm here.

As an intern for the Athens CVB, I will be writing about all of the events going on in Athens, and hopefully giving you a better glimpse at all this city has to offer. And if you're like me, you're going to find out about events and activities you didn't even know existed, and you're going to want to try them all.

So it's time to start making your Athens "To-Do" list, because I'm going to be giving you things to put on it all summer long!

Get in Gear with BikeAthens!

Before moving to Athens GA, I didn't really know how to ride a bike.

That is to say, while I had the ability to ride around in circles in my driveway, I had never voyaged outside the boundaries of my neighborhood. My lack of experience didn't come from a lack of interest though, the disconnect was more the result of my community, which didn't really support biking as a means of transportation or even public activity. Biking was strictly for kids in driveways and families in parks.

With another bike rack always just around the next corner and bike lanes sharing over 54 miles of road, Athens, GA is a far cry from my bike-oppressive roots. As a town that not only supports, but encourages, traveling with just two wheels, Athens is a rare kind of city in the South. After years of hosting special events like the pro cycling Twilight Criterium, bicycles have even come to be a symbol of the Classic City. It's hard to imagine a downtown without brightly colored road bikes carrying Athenians of all ages.

Just last month, Athens-Clarke County received the distinguished designation of Bike Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. Now numbering among only 2 other counties in the state (179 nationally out of over 450 applied) to receive this designation, Athens, GA has been recognized for its efforts and success in creating a bike friendly community. And who do we have to thank for this prestigious honor? Aside from a willing community and cooperative local government, the biggest strides made in the way of making Athens a safe and accessible biking city have come from the commitment of local non-profit, BikeAthens.

BikeAthens has been passionately promoting its mission of informing the community about bicycle and alternative transportation options since 1992. With unrelenting dedication, BikeAthens has carried out its goals through advocacy and, most impressively, community service.

With support from local agencies and committed volunteers, BikeAthens' Bike Recycling Program refurbishes and re-allocates used bikes to those in the community not adequately served by public (and private) transportation. Since its start in 2001, the BRP has repaired over 600 bikes which are donated largely to the Athens Area Homeless Shelter along with a couple of other local organizations. With volunteer operations taking places every Monday and Wednesday from 6-8:30 and Sunday from 2-4:30, the program works to unite the city over a common goal.

So, as a blossoming Athens biker myself, I decided to get my hands dirty for the good of the greater community. Situated in the Chase Park Warehouse next to Pig Pen Studios, BikeAthens workshop has the quirk and heart of all the best Athens locations. Maybe somewhat wishfully prepared, I navigated the somehow artful construction of the Warehouse in a clean set of clothes with two of my willing friends. Inside the buzzing workshop, a few clusters of volunteers hovered around bikes in repair. Not much of a mechanic myself, I realized I may have overestimated my abilities to help, but my doubts were quickly quieted as the nearest group of volunteers greeted us with aprons and pulled us into their current project- a beautiful blue road bike in need of a fresh chain. Teams worked and laughed together all around the workshop engrossed in their repairs, and before I had even managed to smear any grease on my face, we had successfully added the good-as-new chain to our blue beauty. In talking with the wide variety of volunteers of assorted age groups and levels of expertise, it seemed quite clear that what they all shared was a common appreciation and recognition of the value of a town striving for openness and accessibility.

In a larger warehouse unit next door, ready-to-be refurbished bikes of all shapes and sizes covered the concrete floor awaiting the day they'll be pedaled through the welcoming streets of Athens once again.

Athens This Weekend: June 10-12

It's going to be another busy, fun weekend in Athens, GA! With options that appeal to every age and interest, the Classic City is the place to be this warm, summer weekend!

1) Spend your Saturday exploring the beauty of both nature and art in the State Botanical Garden with an Artist Walk of Forged from Nature: An Exhibition of Garden Gates. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., Andrew T. Crawford, the Atlanta-based artist responsible for the six finely-crafted, iron gates, will guide the walk. Attendees of the Artist Walk will follow Mr. Crawford through the gardens to each gate as he describes his nature-inspired designs and metalworking process. The six gates are appropriately named and themed after some basic natural elements: Bird Gate, Vine Gate, Sunflower Gate, Threaded Bar Gate, Corn Gate, and Tool Gate. So take a walk on the artist's side this Saturday to learn more about the exhibit and the art of metal working during the Artist Walk commencing from the conservatory at 11:00 a.m. in the State Botanical Garden. 2) The family days of summer continue this Saturday as the Athens-Clarke County Library hosts Explore Harry Potter's World Family Day from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. The Family Day event is set in celebration of the traveling National Library of Medicine exhibit, "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine." With storytelling, trivia, crafts, madrigal singers, and more, Harry Potter's World Family Day is sure to be nothing short of magical. Costume dress is encouraged so dawn your Hogwarts robes or your Medieval suit of armour and head to the ACC Library this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for a family fun day of Harry Potter magic and Renaissance science. 3) There are few ways to better start off a full weekend in Athens, Ga than by visiting Terrapin Brewery on a Friday afternoon for lots of delicious beer, live music, and fun with friends. This Friday evening, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., head to Terrapin to hear the musical styling of Macon-native, Louise Warren. Playing original and cover songs, the 20-year old singer-songwriter will serenade you with some passionate acoustic melodies as you sip your favorite summer ale. Bring a Frisbee or a blanket and take advantage of the beautiful weather in the outdoor area of the brewery. With tours running at 6:00, 6:30, and 7:00, enjoy a little educational insight into the brewing process. Ready, Set, AthFest! June 22 - 26, 2011

The schedule has been released and the good news is being spread- AthFest 2011 is set to stimulate, inspire and entertain us on all fronts of artistic festivity planned for the eagerly anticipated event. For almost a year, we have been patiently awaiting June 22 - 26, 2011 -- the return of Athens, Georgia's favorite music and arts festival, dreaming of the week when our most talented regional musicians and artists will come together again and illuminate the streets with the sights, sounds, and performances of their respective crafts.

For those who will be experiencing it for the first time, AthFest is a festival to celebrate Athens, Georgia music and arts. Local and regional musicians, artists, performers, and other creative minds will showcase their work throughout the downtown area of Athens, GA. As music is the force that drives the Classic City, it is also the focus of the festival featuring 3 outdoor stages hosting 3 days of shows from an impressive line-up of headlining acts at no charge to the public. Some very exciting performers headlining this year include: Futurebirds, the pensive alt-country band will stop back home in Athens from their tour promoting the blossoming success of their current album; Guadalcanal Diary, will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of their formation as pioneers of 80's Southern indie-pop; Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, the soulful blues rock group with honest, poignant lyrics will play the sounds of the South.

The second and main stage outdoor performances are just the icing on the AthFest cake, though. The "club crawl" event taking place Friday and Saturday night will feature a diverse line-up of local bands and artists performing at around 12 of the best music venues in town. Think 40 Watt, The Melting Point, Little Kings, Caledonia and more. The venue schedule features some exciting Athens favorites, both the weathered and up-and-coming alike, filling virtually every stage in the downtown area. Some exciting performances to look out for: Hope For A Goldensummer, the recently re-emerging folky sister sirens will bring their haunting Southern voices to Little Kings Shuffle Club; Modern Skirts, the still buzzing alt-rock band return their harmonic success to the The Melting Point; Reptar, the young, fresh electro-pop band of boys will beam their high energy to a sure-to-be-dancing crowd at the 40 Watt; Twin Tigers; the dynamic and melodic sounds of their strong Athens influences will be heard at Go Bar. These among a total of around 200 other amazing bands and artists performing in venues and outdoor stages throughout the 3 days of music make the options endless and the choices impossible.

In addition to an incredible musical agenda, the festival also showcases some very exciting comedy acts, dance performances, and film screenings. Notable events include: Laughfest comedy show, June 22 at the 40 Watt, the 2nd annual comedy showcase featuring nationally touring acts such as Dan Telfer and TJ Young with many other hilarious Athenians; WIRED 2011: Athens Dance Music Festival, June 25 at New Earth Music Hall, a showcase of the most talented regional electronic artists playing fresh variations of dubstep, experimental hip-hop, electro-house, and more; AthFest FilmFest 2011, June 22-26 at Cine, daily screenings of Athens-based rock docs, short films, teen screen, and more; Flagpole Music Awards, June 23 at the Morton Theater, the magazine's annual ceremony recognizes local bands across every genre and category who have displayed impressive musical creativity.

Another large component of the AthFest ensemble of events is the Artists Market which is made up of over 40 booths featuring the original artwork of around 50 local artists. Georgia Theatre's Grand Re-Opening

We've all watched anxiously as the beloved Georgia Theatre has risen from ashes after the devastating 2009 fire, eager to hear when the doors would open again. Summer 2011 was promised, and today the Athens Banner-Herald shared Theatre owner Wil Greene's announcement that by August 1, if not earlier, the house will be rocking.

Adding to the excitement is the lineup for the Grand Re-Opening celebration period: homegrown indie veterans The Glands on August 1, Chuck Leavell, Bela Fleck, Big Boi (from Outkast), Drive-By Truckers, Gillian Welch ... BE STILL MY HEART, this is a great two weeks of shows.

If you’re looking to get a little less traditional before your all-American Memorial Day or if you’re just looking to get a little culture, then don’t miss your chance to see ATHICA’s spring exhibit, The Way Things Work, in it’s closing weekend. The exhibit ends in celebration starting this Friday in a reprise of The Way Things Go 2, a video art experience, with outdoor screenings of short video artworks on the ATHICA porch from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Sunday, the closing ceremony will consist of an artist and curator discussion panel followed by a picnic on the porch provided by White Tiger and Trumps from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. With 12 artists from around the country and abroad, this highly stimulating exhibit includes artwork in forms ranging from large-scale installations to pencil drawings. The works featured focus around a theme of systems and norms within culture and society. With pieces like the one pictured below, Trivialities of Deportment by Will Pergl, this exhibit is sure to get you thinking! So try your hand at non-conformity and do something a little different this Memorial Day weekend!

Get fresh at the Athens Farmers Market this Saturday at Bishop Park from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Local foods, crafts, and works of arts from area farmers and volunteers will fill the park along with music from 2 very different groups of performers. Starting the day off right will be the all-female folk trio, Maiden Radio, performing at 8:00 a.m. Then prepare yourselves for a trip to the deep South when Maculele Capoeira take the stage in a traditional Brazilian performance of dance, martial arts, singing, and instrument playing. The Athens Farmers Market is always a great option for your weekend plans, as you’ll get to mingle with the community, enjoy the beautiful morning, and support local commerce.

The city of Winterville will host Veteran Appreciation Day this Saturday. A complimentary BBQ lunch in Pittard Park will be provided for veterans and spouses following a ceremony at the Winterville United Methodist Church.

Dearest Athens, GA,

For the last 3 years, I have been happily wandering through your glorious streets and parks, excitedly immersing myself in your own unique culture of Southern charm, and well frankly, just generally falling in love with your every quirk. And during that time, we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well, but now that I’ll be taking on the P.R. and Social Media internship position for the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau this summer, I think it’s time I properly introduce myself.

My name is Morgan Capps and I will be a senior at The University of Georgia in the fall, soon completing my studies in Psychology, Geography, and New Media. My unusual combination of studies allows me to explore a wide range of interests, a personal tendency that extends to my non-academic life as well. From hosting my own show on UGA’s student radio station, WUOG 90.5 fm, to acting in a production with Town & Gown Players, the local community theater, I am certainly no stranger to taking advantage of the awesome opportunities you have to offer, Athens. But even after 3 years here, I still constantly find myself discovering new places, people, and events existing throughout town.

I can think of no better way to spend the summer than by assisting Athens CVB in diligently seeking out and sharing information on the who, what, and where that combine to make life here so uniquely interesting. I genuinely cannot wait to provide information on your many wonderful restaurants, attractions, special events, and festivals. I promise to blog and otherwise report my many adventures, observations, and ideas, but I’ll need your help, Athens community- I want your feedback and suggestions. Attention! Attention! Calling all Athens-lovers of all ages, come check out some of the exciting events happening around town this weekend. Whether you are 6 years old or 60, the weekend's activities promise fun and adventure for the whole family.

1. The Athens Kids Expo 2011 will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at The Classic Center. Activites ranging from pony rides to a magic show are sure to make very happy campers out of all kids in attendance. Additional entertainment will come in the form of special guest appearances by favorites like the mighty Spiderman, Elmo, Dora the Explorer, and a few of the beautiful Disney Princesses. The Athens Kids Expo is a great opportunity for creative play and some memorable family bonding.

2. The first annual Ms. Senior Athens 2011 Pageant will showcase the grace and vigor of Athens' women of older generations. Come support our Seniors this Saturday at the Georgia Center, from 6:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m., in a display of healthy living and aging. As sponsered by the Athens Community Council on Aging, the event is sure to provide an uplifting and impressive representation of the active spirit of Athens' 60+ community.

3. If the Kids Expo or Ms. Senior Pageant don't fit your fancy, the craft demonstrations, local BBQ, live music, parade, and more happening at the Winterville Marigold Festival this Saturday might just do the trick. From 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. on the corner of Main and Parkview in Winterville, GA, the sounds and smells of the South will fill the streets. The day of country food, fun, and fanfare will conclude apporpriately with "Dancing in the Park" led by Athens' own folk band, Driftwood. The Winterville Marigold Festival is the perfect way to kick-off a sure-to-be-beautiful summer in the Athens area.
